Ha man When you are paycheck to paycheck with debt up to eyeballs like most that's not middle class. I lived in my car in Tulsa making $70/yr at the time debt free, saving /investing 90% of my income and was more middle class than the actual majority of middle class at the time. Now I'm making $130k-$160k/yr. living in upper middle class area, high end condo in Tulsa and Marco Island, rental in Rome, place in Switzerland zero debt, and easily living on $1400/mo..etc. Drive a 5 year old Chevy and wear mostly jeans/sweat pants and tshirt. I'm the millionaire next door. (I'm also immune to divorce rape and weaponized child support) Only changes I see in this country are people living beyond means, too many kids, too big of home, keeping up with Joneses, spend money you don't have, new cars, credit card debt, buying junk and "stuff" among other things. It's not 1960. Can't poop out kids left and right, working one job,and wife staying home they way many live today. You don't adapt so you screw yourselves.
This video is 5 years old. This has been a problem long before the pandemic. My parents or grandparents never had this kind of problem. Houses are so freaking expensive now hardly anyone can afford one.
I know, that's why I'm keeping what I paid for outright. The housing market, topped off with relentless homelessness is enough to eat away at anyone's patience and nerves.
No it can't happen to anybody. It happens to people who find employment then go and buy a new car. If you have been homeless for 2 years and find a job you don't buy a new car for a decade. You make sure you never end up in that situation ever again. Even if you lose a job you ensure you can live off the interest of your savings. If you make $40k you save $20k eating the same shit you are when you were homeless to make sure you never ever end up the same way.
@JAchica11 I know this is from a year ago, but the answer to your question is, because the church in this case is the easier fight. The system that is deliberately creating this problem, to fill their pockets, has more heads and is a much more difficult fight. It's not right to pick the softer target, just human nature unfortunately.
The cost of living has gone up but people's wages haven't!!! Rent is ridiculously high in some places such as California and people barley scrape enough to get by. People say "get an education to get a better paying job! " College tuition has gotten so expensive, people get into even more debt after they finish school. It's becoming almost impossible to escape poverty in America.
Father God I come humbly to you and ask that you help yr people to get jobs, shelter, food, and health . Please God let them know you love them. In Jesus Name Amen.
A clerk at my local gas station who is an immigrant from Mexico has 3 full time minimum wage jobs. The reason? So his family (wife and 3 kids) can live and go to school in a nice neighborhood. I use to take taxis all the time. The interesting thing is, they were all immigrants with College degrees. The problem? Their degrees weren't recognized in this Country. I find it interesting that the guy who found a job bought a Dodge Challeneger instead of something more practicable in case he had to move back in his car. Me? I decided at age 30 to get a job with a pension, so I left my Art Director's job and switched to Law Enforcement. While working, I took all the overtime I could get. My goal was to pay off my house before retirement, which I did. I retired with no debts and a house worth 300% more than what I paid. I drive a 22 year old truck and an 18 year old car so I don't get into debt. I save my tax refunds in case I have to buy a car, I can pay cash. My pension covers all our living expenses and my wife's Social Security goes into the Bank or investment accounts.
For the price of that car, he could have moved to one of the small towns in America that are still affordable and bought a small house with land. Priorities are so skewed.
I’ve been living out of my car off and on for the last 5 years unable to find a stable job and reasonable rent in my hometown Santa Barbara CA. Rent is $1300 for a studio apartment and I’m lucky if I make $1600 a month after taxes at my current full time job. Not to mention denials from credit checks. Never learned about credit in school. My heart goes out to the families.
I live here because it’s where I was born and raised and I love it here. Update. I worked my ass off as an apprentice for two years and continued living out of my car and showering at the gym until I earned enough and was finally approved for a studio apartment I can now afford. It was all the days and nights of prayers, Buddhist meditations, and positive affirmations, that kept me going through it all. I really encourage those struggling to heal and keep striving from within. Never stop believing in yourself. Each day on earth is a blessing filled with opportunities. Spread love. We are all one infinite consciousness having an individual experience. Each one teach one. Never give up. As Tupac Shakur once said. “After every dark night, there’s a bright day after that, so no matter how hard it seems, stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it!” Peace and Love! 🙏📿 #NamMyohoRengeKyo
@@MatoMusic805 love your story, i am a believer in self, your mind believes what you tell it, glad to hear you followed your dream and didn't fall into the self-pity, god is there but it is in his time
This is the problem with the middle class. If they earned $80,000 they spent $85,000 What they should have been doing is living like they Earned $25,000 Until they were so comfortable no recession could take them down.
That is the ONLY way for ordinary people to get ahead. If you choose not to do it, no one is going to feel sorry for you. Your life, your choices. If you don't like the outcome of your poor choices, take it up with yourself, not those who sacrificied much to avoid this outcome.
"People like us" were people like you", sir. My neighborhood or state has no safe parking lot and we get things stolen from our yards and cars daily. I have watched drivers throw their trash out of the window as they drive past my soon not to be residence, my next door neighbor's yard looks like a jungle so please have some respect as you judge "us".......We SO NEED this on the east coast specifically NEW JERSEY. 55+ and preparing my suv to become my home. It is SO out of control and our government could care less. Homeless communities pay much less or no taxes (if not working), therefore our greedy and corrupt government have no use for us. It's pathetic. Worked my entire life for this?
I would implore absolutely anyone who is in this situation of being Middle Class and losing your home, especially if you are a single woman: DO NOT GO TO THE HOMELESS SHELTERS!!! ESPECIALLY mixed sex shelters!! And by that, I mean anywhere that the homeless men can have access to you at anytime of the day, even if you sleep separately. This includes ESPECIALLY shelters with male staff, who in my own personal hellish experience, can use their authority to prey on the women who stay in these shelters. If you have a car, live in it. If you have a friend who can lend a couch, stay with them. A garage, a big shed...anything. There are men in these homeless shelters ,and other women, from all walks of life. Some are from gangs, some are fresh out of jail on murder charges, some are sex offenders...the list goes on and on. if you have teenagers, there will be no end to the access they have to drugs and people on them in a shelter. These people know gang members, corrupt police, members of community harassment groups...all and every sort of criminal. If you so much as look at some of these people the wrong way, it can mean your life. If you wouldnt stay in a prison for shelter, you dont want to stay in a homeless shelter for housing. The short-term solution is not worth the longer term and possibly even permanent risks. That's the general rule. I made the mistake ,as a single female, of staying in a homeless shelter in Miami when I moved there and couldnt find a job. My life was literally ruined because I attracted the attention of the wrong man there through NO fault of my own whatsoever. A place like that ,for more reasonable people, is meant to be a pitstop. But there are people that can decide they want it to be the beginning of your end and you will find that ,for such people, life is very cheap. Someone who has given up on themselves entirely and destroyed their own life is probably not going to give a second thought to destroying yours. That is not to say all. There are many fine, good, and lovely people who just made/make very poor choices. But there are those who want nothing more than to watch the world around them burn and they are happy to start with you because you have had something they may never have had and they may well view you as "privileged". Please...DO NOT DO IT TO YOURSELF. It literally ruined my life. I live literally on the other side of the planet now, and I still have problems with gang members (most specifically, biker gangs) and some of the generally disgruntled. Gangs are global now. You can be found and harmed or harassed anywhere.
Those financial literacy courses are critical. If you notice the first thing Kevin Landry did when he secured his apartment and job was buy a new car as opposed to immediately begin building up financial reserves in case he becomes unemployed again. Probably even paying monthly on it.
@@debbieframpton3857 Smart. I bought a 10 year old SUV with less than 100k miles and in good running condition. Paid it off in 3 months. Minor electric issues need fixing but runs great. Much better than getting a 20k car, putting 3k down, and have a $450 a month payment. If you don't have a job making 65k or above new vehicles are pretty much a waste. There are plenty of 2-5 year old vehicles that are affordable and look good if you have a sales job or are an entrepreneur
My husband and I did without the trappings of the middle class. We had one child, paid for our home, while everyone around us bought homes they could not afford, put in swimming pools they could not afford, had a boatload of kids the could not provide for, and end up with nothing. Make good decisions about your future.
My uncle died too but he had a life insurance policy. He thought about protecing his family if something happened to him. A day after the funeral i handed my aunt a check , that paid off the mortgage and left money for them forever. The banks dont want you to know about life insurance, they want the house back to keep making money
I know what it's like sleeping in your car I've been there it's not cool you feel like your life has ended at times...but in reality it hasn't not yet because GOD has your back and he will see you through
THE GROOVE. This is just a test. GOD'S message to ALL BELIEVERS is-and herein lies our Power: 2 CHRONICLES 7:14: THEN if MY people, who are called by MY name [belong to ME], will humble themselves, if they will pray and seek ME [MY face] and stop their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and I will heal [restore] their land. ( EXB) Also see KJV and NKJV.
Looks like you have it pretty good . I am a homeless Vet lived in my van for 20 years, i felt very privileged, a lot of people live on the street, no shelter at all ,eat out of garbage cans, smoke buts from the gutter ,don't shower for years at a time . I help who i can , There are a lot of good people out there flawed and broken but free .
Mother Goddess, I am so sorry for acting so ungrateful lately. Watching this video made me realize what I actually have and be thankful again. My prayers to the universe.
That 'last family' ( woman with her FOUR CHILDREN...Living in her Car) Heartbreaking.... Fuck...things shouldn't be this way... hurts so bad to have to bear witness to such 'difficult times for people. 4 god damn kids, plus her....in a small Car!!??..... Dear God..... i hope she get's help or got on her feet .... those poor kids.... don't even 'understand...or know...why or how... they are struggling. little prayer for all those who are 'on the street...regardless of circumstance. such a world....
People have always had tough times. The difference today is family and friends are not stepping up to help as the used to. Sometimes there's a good reason for this, sometimes it's just an "every man for himself" mentality. There is also this modern tendency of people moving to distant parts of the country where they don't know anyone or have any support system. Yes, I would live to live near a beach or around palm trees, but I'll be damned if I'll be somewhere where I don't have a soul to turn to if things go south.
@The end is near I suppose being there is more people pouring into the US, there is more people reaching out, lot of people just take care of their own needs by looking ahead and expecting they will need to, I always thought living in a van like so many people are enjoying today would be fun, with a little planning I am sure in most cases that could be done, why should anyone feel they should have people to give to them
I moved back to Texas to try to find cheaper rent and it's just as bad as everywhere else 1500 to 2500 is ridiculous. How does a person that lives on social security supposed to live. It's impossible.
i live on a benefit in the Netherlands. and i have a normal rental home. pay 278 euros per month for it does not include gas and electricity. i still have to pay that in full my self. 95 euros a month for both electricity and gas. plus i pay 57 euros for my internet (1Gb fiber optic. and i can still live a normal life. in the Netherlands if you live under the minimum wage you get help from the government to pay for your rental house. you also get reduction on your health care. time for America to see that a social democratic system is the way to go. but that will never happen.
The house of the guy worried about home prices being brought down, looked pretty dang like it would bring down prices anywhere. He should start with his property.
you guys are not homeless, you guys like me(i live in a van very happily without a mortgage and any kind of welfare ). we all live in a nice home on wheels and what it is best without a mortgage and that is freedom
People from the community think that homeless people wanna sleep in parking lots while living in their cars . I understand the feelings of the people from the community but they don't know how it feels to be homeless ! The only people who understand what it feels like to be homeless , would be people whose been there . Anyway I'm deepest regrets go out to all those who are homeless . I doubt if the US government or any of them in office care about people being homeless ! For them to know how it feels , they need to live it so that they can understand homelessness . Good luck , Thank you for sharing and God bless !! 👍👍👌👌😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Thanks for your comment and empathy toward our situation. I created my channel to show people what living in a car is really like, if anyone is interested. There are a lot of bigoted and uninformed assumptions being made in other peoples' comments here, and that just piles more shame on the existence of involuntary homelessness in America.
you know what a big problem is. people get into too much debt and buy things they do not need (over spending). im sure this is not the case for most on this short clip, but todays society focuses on fancy cars, biggest house with a pool, nice clothes etc. mortgages and rent is the killer, then theirs car loans which to me makes absolutely no sense, and it keeps going from there. life is expensive, but we as a society are buying into all this marketing crap. even just going to grab a coffee every morning before work adds up and takes away from your bottom line.
You're absolutely right about debt and materialism being huge problems. That can't be understated. But that's not necessarily a major cause of homelessness. The lack of family, friends and community support during tough times is what sends many people into homelessness, regardless of the reason for tough times (layoffs, disability, natural disaster, mental illness, drug addiction, etc). I've seen drug-addled repeat violent criminal offenders never become homeless because of family support. I was as responsible a professional and citizen as I knew how to be, but I had no support at all when a perfect storm of otherwise salvageable disasters all occurred at once. And so I now live in a car, which I don't like at all. It's been utterly devastating. View my video "What It's Like To Live In A Car" to see how safe I feel sleeping in parking lots.
I don't get how a man who has been living in his car , still weighs 350 lbs. Shouldn't his diet have changed considerably if he is living in poverty ? No offence but this needs explaining .
Erin Mary lol I’m not on food stamps I’m saying buy what you can afford I have no sympathy for people like that I used to repo cars I never felt bad about it because it was never a person down on their luck & can’t make a $50 car note it was an entitled idiot who wanted something they couldn’t afford I was more happy to take it I drive a 08 Chevy Impala (paid in cash) & have a 2011 bmw 750 li fully loaded as a toy I dont buy things I cannot afford then wonder why I’m in debt & struggling no pity absolute stupidity
Erin Mary That’s great but buy what you can afford once you lose your job you give your financed or leased cars & buy one you can afford or do that in the first place you own the car & save on car notes
Ben Barry depends on the mentality. Some people have a not so close relationship to their car. The last possession id ever give away is my mustang boss 302.
well where i am the minimum wage is $7.25 and a two bed apartment is 1000-1200$ not including gas, electric and food... which adds up!!!! wake up AMERICA!!!!
I live Van Life on purpose, I don't consider myself homeless. I love the financial freedom it gives me. (No rent/ utility bills, etc. ) I have more money now then ever before, Never going back to "sticks & bricks/ house bills ever again 🤷♂️.
Merry Christmas 2020 , and what next for the Middle Class in 2021?! From homes to condos, from apts to the streets in cars . Any way to look at it all the Middle Class is joining the homeless! And who cares in Washington DC?! Hard working and honest people in the streets! What a crying shame AMERICA land of opportunities now less wonderful!!
Americans need to stop trying to become middle class and instead focus on trying to create additional income streams. That's the key to surviving the loss of a job. Purge your mind of dumb ideas like "middle class". Instead, do what you can to safeguard yourself by being sure that if you lose your 1 job, you would keep living as if you'd never lost the job. Focus on this when times are good. Don't wait until you are in fear of getting laid off or, after you're laid off.
Only when liberals like jerry Brown allow sanctuary cities, ms13, and other felons to run free. Ministries are trying to feed the people, provide housing etc.
My daughter and I have been told MANY TIMES!!!!!! there is no room in the shelters anywhere between San Diego County Los Angeles County Riverside County Orange County and Ventura County there's no room for us we're on waiting list and I work and I still can't afford a place. I'm not a drug addict I'm not a bad person I'm just a single mother and college graduate who is doing everything I can to in sure that my daughter is taken care of.
This just doesn't happen in Europe. all of the countries of Europe are welfare states of some kind (they vary widely in scope and implementation, however). Even the poorest ones. Homelessness is not something that happens to perfectly normal Europeans with perfectly normal lives. If you “hit a rough patch,” and can’t afford to pay for your home, you’ll find yourself provided with financial assistance from the government. If need be, you will be provided with social housing, which exists in various forms in nearly all European countries. Again; being homeless means being dead. Well functioning societies don’t leave people to die in the streets. Oh, except USA.
ThePoacherz They absolutely are not middle class. Middle class people don't end up homeless when they strike obstacles, because they have low or no debt, plus investments. You have a very odd definition of middle class.
For an outsider it seems to me that an American citizenship does not come with any benefits only liabilities such as taxes, that sounds like a raw deal, in my country we pay taxes but demand and get something in return from our government, things like free hectare, kindergarten, unemployment benefits and so on, and nobody needs to live in a van ore on the streets. A nation where people dont have the basic necessities is a failed state.
Cars don't have indoor plumbing, Cars don't have bedrooms, Cars don't have places to keep food cool. The purpose of a car is to get you from A to Z. Not to live in.
@@Tyree101 buy a small Domestic plug-in cooler to keep stuff cold . Use gym to shower. Get a bucket, line it with garbage bags for toilet . Solar panel to help keep cell charged at night. So many videos available with people explaining how they live in their vehicles!
But if you asked any of these people if they still believe that the system is fair, that the meritocracy is still alive and the possibilities are limitless they still would believe the American Dream is real and that they will become middle class again as soon as that great gig becomes available. The only people who change a system are those who stopped believing in it. Americans won’t give up on this trickle down, pick yourself by your boot straps capitalism even if that meant starvation or working 4 gigs. The need to believe in unicorns is too strong!!
I'm one of many who fell thru Obama's "prosperous" yrs & have yet to recover @ 56. NEVER in life have I seen wages SO low! Very true wages have remained stagnet for 30yrs. The new "American dream". If you won't do job for non living wage, 50 more immigrants in line that will! Many jobs now require (or preference given) to bilingual. Not just mass migration, technology has changed and/or eliminated many jobs too. My stepfather had middle class life with house, boat, vacations, etc.all on labor jobs. Now that same job pays 9hr.if lucky & few worker's speak English. Wal-Mart/Amazon mentality as consumers demanded "cheap" & supported big box vs.small biz. I refuse to support big box. Americans got what they asked for...cheap labor! Then bitch about it! Cant have it both ways.
Hmm... actually I so sad to see a view like that. But a weel always turning. Sometimes up and somerimes down..here are USA down.. many homeless.. I never seen before.
There is no homeless in my town, but people work and dont expect socialist California to do it for them, This is the greatest country but bringing in all the illegals to take jobs and housing away from Americans ruins our great country, gooo California, please all the homeless from my state
When the banking cartel decided what amount and when money should be available, things for the working people went south big time. If you ever want to get ahead, you first need to pay cash for everything! Get rid of the plastic cards, the expensive homes and everything with a mortgage! Pay yourself first by putting money in a savings. School buses can be bought for $5000, fix it up and live in it. It can be done.
The not middle class , Middle class income gross in Australia is $80000aud -$275000aud gross / income tax is 48% , so you earn $275000aud gross , after income tax $172,000 aud . The cars you can afford on this wage is Bmw m4cs , c63s coupe , Audi rs4 ' Porsche cayman Gts I wouldn't call these millionaires cars
