Hey Dan thanks for sharing, but hey a bad day at your office is just about always a good time, and I dig your videos no matter what, you are livin the dream..... stay safe brother
Even though I could see you were getting frustrated, you kept your cool and adjusted your game plan. A good lesson for all divers no matter if you’re spearfishing or just doing a pleasure dive. Thanks for another great video and I’m still waiting on that gear video! Lol!
Wow Dan. I never thought that you would have a problem shooting fish. Thank you for showing this and keeping it real. This is a great encouragement to me. Cheers
Hey SV, lol, yeah it just didn't go like it should have. While I was editing the video to post on YT, I was laughing at the whole thing. Was glad it worked out in the end! Best, Dan
Hi Dan, I had Black Grouper at Parkshore Grill (downtown St. Pete) yesterday and it was absolutely delicious. I told the server about your U-Tube channel and there was a good chance your boat shot that fish. Let me know when you are ready to unlock the safe and sell a few numbers. Let’s start the bidding at $500 for 5 numbers off of Bayport in 60-80 ft of water. Keep the videos coming- cheers!
Another great video. I’ve watched them all and learned so much from you. Bought an Ocean Rino for myself for Christmas. Ready to step up my game. Thanks
Matt, I blamed it on not enough coffee that morning, lol. I was truly surprised when that shaft died and hit low on that second fish. No spears in the gun and two fish running around, haven't done that in years! Going to try really hard to not repeat that either! Best, Dan
Hey Kenny, yeah I was laughing as I was getting the video ready to put on YT. I was glad to put that dive behind me for the rest of the day. I kinda enjoy poking a little fun at myself as well! Glad you enjoyed it! Best, Dan
Hey BB, yeah the MG's are stunning....up to 50' of relief and lots of Coral. About 75-100 miles offshore. I've been diving out there for over 40 years and still find new stuff to dive! Best, Dan
Better bottom than the ones we have in Bradenton, still better than watching fake news. Keep them coming Captain Dan. Have a blessed Easter Sunday. Can come to Bayside Community Church any time you want too.
Thanks Juan, I'd been wanting to post a "blooper" video for some time and this dive seemed to be the one! It doesn't go perfectly for anybody every time! Thanks for your comments! Best, Dan
Nice laughs out of that one... little banjo music in the background at 2:38 and 3:38 would be a good fit. I dont know how many times I have to keep re-learning this lesson: "Slow is smooth and smooth is FAST." at least I am in good company.
hahaha... i liked it.... your dive finally look more like mine now lol not gonna lie i have my stringer on a rope and buckle attached to me.. ive thought the gag was dead before and him blindle swim off with my stringer leaving me searching lol
Thanks Kevin, the text commentary and deck footage additions were all subscriber suggested. I really like doing those as well. Glad you like the videos, Best, Dan
@@isaacfanelli4940 You can see them on the lower part of his gun. They have a bullet in them that goes off when you shoot a fish. Watch a few of his amberjack videos or the one's with aggressive sharks and you'll see him use them.
Hey RV, yes it did all work out in the end. Took way too much time and effort but they all ended up on the boat. It really can be tough finding a good dive buddy, I'm fortunate to have the ones I have. Best, Dan
Hey Mr. Dan great video .You are still the Man, I hope to see more of your Dive Videos. I just got certified as a diver. Do you have any suggestions for me?I am all ways looking for new Videos from Head Hunters. God bless you 🙏.
Hey David, just take it slow and steady. Try to dive with more experienced divers, you never learn much from hanging with people that know less than you do! Best, Dan
B31, it was kinda weird, on the way back from running down that hit Grouper, it was pretty stiff but really nothing on the reef. The entire dive was def missing on a cylinder! Best, Dan
Ha! This video was medicinal for me. Seems like a lot of my shots have complications. Ever have a Mango chomp down on you while trying to get him under control? I had one that wouldn’t let go of my arm and another my stomach-same day. Have the holes in my dive shirt to prove it. 😂
Hey Scott, glad you liked it! Sometimes a blooper dive is just what the doctor ordered. Yeah Mangos are bad news and deserve to be called snapper. A good friend had the brilliant idea of sticking an "almost dead" one down his shorts while free diving and saving a swim back to the boat. As you've probably already guessed, it snapped down on a particularly sensitive part of his anatomy. If I've ever laughed harder, I sure don't remember it! Stupid should hurt! Best, Dan
Hey Dan, thanks for an entertaining video and congratulations on reaching 20k subscribers. That should be enough to start selling “Team Headhunter” gear, shouldn’t it? Put me down for a T shirt in XL.
Hey Mr Bill, thanks. I watched it last night after a couple of beers and laughed a lot. I was talking to the tv saying "hey stupid the waters super clear and that's a 20 pound fish not a 12 pound fish and he's farther away than he looks and don't pull the trigger" but then I pulled it anyway, lol. Glad you enjoyed it! Best, Dan
El H, lol, yeah it sure wasn't smooth...super clear water can really play games with accuracy. If you think it's a 20' shot and it's really 25' than you're going to hit low every time! Best, Dan
Those 2 Gags had other ideas about not wanting to end up on someone's dinner plate but as usual your determination, skill and knowledge triumphed in the end. Hell....your 134 lb Black came much much easier
Hey WT, yeah it really did! I guess its like anything else, if you do something a lot, occasionally it isn't going to go right. The funny thing is I remember those dives much better than the dives that go perfectly! Go figure. Best, Dan
Beautiful rock bottom Dan. Question: Have you ever tried using a pole spear for a stringer as opposed to loop. If so give Pro’s and cons. I used a pole spear as a stringer after a run in with a bull and decided I didn’t want bleeding fish hooked to my side. I used a 6ft Pole with a good barb and long tang. Also good for rescuing poor shots. Just a thought cause you are better than I ever was, and I’ve taken many Grouper.
Hey Barry, no I never have tried that but it's an interesting thought. I never clip a fish laden stringer to myself... Others do and it seems to work for them but I've had a couple of buddies who used to do it, had very bad problems with it and don't do it anymore. One had 3-4 fish on a stringer attached to a weight belt with a serious clip. He was diving on a big steel wreck and a 600 pound plus JF inhaled the stringer and tried to drag him through a whole in the side of the wreck, into the inside of the wreck. The weight belt finally let go but not before he was banged up and bleeding pretty good. If there had been something pointed and sharp or if the weight belt hadn't given, it could have been fatal, easily. Another had a 8' Tiger try to inhale it , which means the Shark was snapping and twisting mere inches from your body. No way he could unclip the stringer with that going on and he was lucky to have not gotten seriously bitten. Attaching bloody fish on a stringer to my body with a metal clip. No thanks! Best, Dan
Thanks Darren, I've kind of limited myself to 300' or less anymore. I might consider going deep if something really special happened. Like finding a new wreck or something like that! Best, Dan
Hey Joey, yeah I've been wanting to post another "blooper" video, also called a "how not to do this" video and this dive def seemed to fit the bill! Best, Dan
Rob, lol, that I def am. A dive like that every once in a while is sometimes a much needed thing! Was glad it happened on the first dive of the day so I could get on past it! Best, Dan
hiee good day for you .. im from the philipines. im your nomber 1 fans. nextmonth its my birthday can i your old speargun i have no money to buy this things... tinks and godbless
This morning really wasnt your morning!! I watch all ur vids on RU-vid and this dive has to be your most sloppy dive lol...but like the fish really got some energy on this day...the vis does still fool you after all these years? Is it something a diver could get over with the clear vis?
TH1983, we make our own guns. I would think any quality wood gun would work. I like the 60" length shafts which dictates a 55-60" TL gun. Ours are about 58" tip to tip with no spear in them. Best, Dan
Hey AC, if by smaller, you mean shorter, that yes it would. If you meant smaller in diameter that not too much, unless you're adding huge power. Best, Dan
Dan, I have to ask...... have you ever targeted any type of shark for any reason? I enjoyed watching you ph a bull in a different video, but I know it wasn't a targeted species.
Hey Jimmy, no , I don't have a Shark License and there's really no market for them anymore if I did. I try to not give them problems and hope they don't give me any. I'll basically leave an area if possible to avoid them. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. The guys and me try hard not to have to kill one, but every once in a while, you simply have no reasonable choice. I haven't had to PH one in quite a while and hope that holds through the upcoming Shark Summer. Best, Dan
Hey Steve, that's a great gun and I know the maker well! I only shoot the guns we make but that one should go quick if you put it out there. Best of luck with the sale! Dan
Another day at the office...thanks again for sharing your adventures with us, Dave. What caliber do you have in your powerhead? I use 357 mag is that sufficient enough for self defense?
Thanks Lee, yes, a .357 is usually more than ample for SD. The only time it wouldn't be is if you were diving really deep. At 33', you get 1/2 the bang of what you get at the surface, at 99', you get 1/4 , and at 198' you'd only get 1/8 the bang that you'd get at surface. Best, Dan
Dan another awesome dive - keeping me positive during this craziness in lockdown thanks! 3 questions and thanks in advance for your insights: 1. I am a Master Scuba thinking about doing either my Tech Cert or DiveMaster/Instructor. Given the depths you are diving which I want to do, it looks like tech is the way to go- is that the cert/training you have to dive to those depths (I know experience is also critical)? 2. I am looking to buy a new Reg - what do you recommend in terms of features and capability - obviously want ease of breathing but what else do you recommend (I am not in to cold water diving even though I am in Canada). 3. I am also about to invest in a new BCD system and wondering what you recommend. I know all this is personal preference to a large extent but I am interested in your thoughts. I want a donut with double tanks and manifold - I noticed you guys use one larger tank with a second smaller one often I think - rather than two larger tanks? Also are guys using Nitrox/gas mix? Your thoughts as always are much appreciated!
GC, # 1... I have a Trimix Cert through TDI. #2... The only regs I use are Zeagle's. They've done a great job for us the past 20 years. I'm sure there are other great regs out there, but my only recent experience has been with with Zeagle gear. #3... I also use Zeagle BC's and Wings....their Stiletto and Ranger jackets are excellent tech spearfishing BC's. When I was doing deeper stuff, I used their SS BackPlate with their big bertha wing. #4 Yes, I use Nitrox up to 150' or so and a light Helitrox blend from 150'-200'ish...after ~220' I usually go to Trimix. Would enjoy hearing about what you do and what level of training is currently required for the depths you want to dive. Best, Dan
