I edited this clip of the Middle Passage so that it is appropriate for a public school classroom, although I would stil warn my students that the images are graphic and disturbing.
This is excruciating to watch. I am a 28 year old single mother and I started back to college this fall and decided write my history report on the middle passage. I am not of African decent, yet this has been an emotional and painful report to complete. It is so easy to forget the history of our country, especially when the facts are so cruel and inhumane, it is heartbreaking. I am speechless. As a country we still have so far to go, but I am thankful for how far we have come.
It's things like this is why I'm never dropping the word african from African - American. My ancestors suffered too much for me to just come up with some bullshit likes " we'll I've never even been to Africa".
How long will we speak to each other in words of hatred? How long will we work to keep ourselves divided? I hope that soon all this rage toward each other will end and from the ashes will rise a unified nation
@jityr2 Due to illegal trading and lack of record keeping those numbers will forever be lost to history. However, most historians estimate 30 to 40% I believe.
Are you following me lol? How do you define Moor? I thought it would be those Muslims who fought on the Iberian Peninsula, held Grenada, and eventually forced to Morocco. Just because someone takes you over doesn't mean you become them. Rome covered Italy to Britain, does that mean everyone they controlled is now Roman? We need to appreciate African diversity.
@rbgsoldiers actually i learned in my history class just today that Africans held other tribes as slaves before America did, though it wasnt as horrible, and that some africans went on raids to capture their own people for a profit. so yeah this is a pretty accurate depiction.
This is our story Rather you are an African-American, Dominican, Jamaican, or from Ghana. You will never hear a white person deny their Irish, British, Scottish, heritage ect.
"the truth is we are all of african descent." Yea but we're all not facing the daily problems that those of recent African descent(and non Africans of a darker hue) have to face world wide. How can society unite when a group of people are still regarded more highly over others? Until those of that group reject the special treatment then and only then can steps towards unity be taken. All this kumbaya is glossing over the individual struggles that certain groups of people still go through.
I'm a high school teacher and I'm wondering why you edited this. History is history. We can't shelter our students from past atrocities or clean up history only to give them a distorted view. These are the things that really happened and we shouldn't change that for the sake of "appropriateness."
I dont remember swearing to anything, I said I beleive. But, you are right most historians say 20 percent. If you include those who died en route to the middle passage that percentage goes way higher. Im wondering why is "at least 20%" so different then 30%? The point is many died the exact number isnt overly important, especially since no one knows for sure.
@dbzl7 And that's what we do, what is considered good is just a mass consensus of morals. You have a point in saying I have given my own definition to the words good and evil, but I didn't say they didn't or couldn't have a definition what I said was that there is no TRUE definition, it varies based on where your from and who you are. oh and eating rotten fruit isn't a moral choice it's a calculation with an answer, sure you could eat it, but that doesn't question morals, its not good or evil.
This is still the dramatic version. The french film "Passage du milieu" (The Middle Passage in English, narrated by Djimon Hounsou) is a much more realistic account of what happened in the middle passage. Show the students that, and don't "edit" it. Teach the black youth that their history does not being with slavery. Defeat the traditional white supremacist historical teaching!
@IwontConform You missed the essence of the movie. Really, it does'nt matter who did it, the fact is that it was done. Christians, muslims, atheist, and jews, all owned slaves and participated in the slave trade. I could care less if it was a Christian or Jew who made the movie, or whether it was a Christian or Jew who committed these crimes, it was done and the story should be told. It's not about "demonizing" Christians' it's about telling the truth.
@dbzl7 One more thing, sorry ran out of room, I'm not trying to challenge your believes I'm simply stating my own. I'm putting this here now so I don't start another idiotic flame war and waste your time as well as mine.
In the time of Ismail he captured over 50,000 white Christians and enslaved us as well to build his monuments to himself...Go to school and learn your history son. Gemma Inc.
I agree with you that we shouldn't gloss over events that are occurring or rewrite history. I know that these problems can't be ignored. But you can't blame an entire race for the downfall of others. Sure, certain political leaders of a nation composed of white people have been known to wrong the masses. The same could be said of political leaders in Africa, or more specifically the Middle East. Why generalize by placing the fault of a few on the shoulders of the many? Why stratify it by race?
zarix2311 ... good and evil have no true definition and just vary from society to society. Is that as definition? by trying not to define good and evil you've assigned your own definition. Things such as good and evil have to be defined otherwise we'd be lawless. Given a choice would you eat rotten fruit? In the same way, given a choice we should try to choose what is good.
@angelsnupnup7Warrior please watch. just in the same way herzl understood why zionism is a necessity for the jewish people, marcus garvey understood its necessity for black people.
If your African American the chances you are of morrish blood are slim to none. We are from West Africa most likely. And damn do a history lesson on slavery and the slave trade.
lol nah its all good to debate these things, sports, rap, history. I already knew a little of Bahia revolt in Brazil. I know there were muslims caught in the slave trade if that's what you were showing me. You probably need to explain to me who a moor is? Like I said I thought that described the Northern Africans I talked about before. Always remember how history is written. To truly understand the past you need to read competing theories from authors, and decide who supports there evidence best
@travelingnomad1 The fact that you would say something like that in the first place is really sad. every African culture/race has fought for it's dominance as awful as our ancestors actions were, to judge our generation for the actions of past generations is really sad.
we are all descendants of africans. think on that. what's the point in distinguishing yourself as something separate when what race really is is humans adapting to the environment they've been subjected to for thousands of years.
there was a part missed...prob because of the massive amount of nudity...(they would strip down the slaves completely naked-no clothes, no disease they though) but anyways they would strip them and beat them to "break them" from rebelling. Source:World Civilization Class Term Paper---had to write a paper over this movie.
if youve been wronged by someone or a group of people who happened to be white because of your ethnicity then i am sorry. but you were wronged by ignorant people. that they were white is irrelevant. there are so many people who happen to be white who are not ignorant and marry and have families with black people. you are doing them and their families a disservice by slandering them the way you are.
oh...and by the way why do you have the right to say someone is good or evil, good and evil have no true definition and just vary from society to society. I think it's ironic the notion of "burning to a crisp" is a Cristian belief that was never taught in Africa. the basis of your deep cutting insult is from the "evil" white man you so despise...peace
