Hiking the Wainwrights - Season 1: Eastern Fells - Episode 7. Deepdale Horseshoe, The Lake District
One of the most obvious routes to tick off a large number of Wainwrights in one fell swoop in the Eastern Fells is the Fairfield Horseshoe. But, I simply can't bring myself to walk that one again as I've done it MANY times before. Besides, there's already a vlog dedicated to that route (see below).
So, I've decided to dissect that horseshoe into several smaller routes, starting with this one; the Deepdale Horseshoe. However, it's not all that much smaller. This was a big day out with equally big views and even bigger plumes of midges for added enjoyment!

Just loved this route. My first route I did and sat looking at my home the Isle of Man. No midgies that day. Just supported your coffee fund 👍

I watched this video on Thursday while waiting for an operation to have an ICD inserted in Bristol Heart Institute. It took my my mind completely off my procedure and it had me wandering the fells with you, no better way to prepare for heart surgery! The op went well and I hope be back in the fells soon to complete my 2nd round of Wainwrights and finish off the outlying fells. Keep up the excellent series, it's doing more good for people than you might imagine.

Cracking Glenn, that's another walk added to my to-do list although I might start at Deepdale Bridge and miss out on Arnison Crag & Birks and head straight for Lord's Seat then Gavel Pike. Main reason for this? Well I've been on all the fells on your walk earlier this year apart from Hartsop above How and I do like the walk down from Hart Crag over Hartsop above How just that I've walked it the other way the past couple of times. Those midges/flying ants on Hartsop above How summit - flipping heck!!

Bits of three walks from my old days, and a connection I never explored. It was my Dad who introduced me to fellwalking and I can just imagine him, as eager as me, to see each one of these videos as you put them out. I wish he'd have had the chance, and I to sit with him and discuss everything we can see.

So pretty there. As a Danish person I find it interesting that you use the word beck. Not heard it in English before but probably old Norse as we call it 'bæk' and it's pronounced the same. Bæk - beck...

Watching from a sun lounger in 🇹🇷 so I feel your crispness in those warm conditions. 😅 went up a mountain called babadağ yesterday, 6200ft and 25 degrees at the summit, no wind and above the clouds. Crazy but nowhere near as beautiful as the lake district. Its all dry, dusty and a bit boring to walk once you leave the cable cars. Can't wait to get back out in the fells.

Loved the vid again. I did the same walk but in reverse last winter when Cofa Pike was basically an ice cube. I learned an important lesson about footwear that day as I had no spikes or crampons, took me a good hour to get over it.and I confess I was terrified for a good part of that hour.

LOL! in our fell walking early days we attempted the horse shoe for the first time. Clagged in on the summit we descended, stopped for lunch when the wind took some of the cloud away and we were stunned to be eating on what I now know is Cofa Pike. Suspicions set in and when I got my Wainwright out and could not see a view of St Sunday because we were on it that confirmed we were on our way to Patterdale where the pub advised there were no buses for the remainder of that year. Our family now refer to this walk as the Fairfield Banana. Yep, done what you pointed out and got the T shirt. Great vlog again 👍

What time of year does the snow hit usually. Is it more January/February time or will we see snow usually before Christmas in the lakes. I always seem to time it wrong. Love that track at the end by the way! Also bought you a beer for your troubles, sooth those aching legs a bit on the return :)

Thanks for the beer, really appreciate that 🙏 Snow can hit as early as November but normally just a dusting. But we can have deep snow right through to March. It's rare, but it happens. Normally though it's December to February, and it comes and goes on a daily basis 😂
