After a flurry of new subscribers interested in getting started in composition and production, I thought it could be a good idea to start a series called The Basics. Quick tips, beginner investments, equipment recommendations; generally filling in the gaps that my other content reveals.
In this episode of #TheBasics, I show which MIDI control surfaces I use and how I use them with my chosen DAW, Logic Pro X.

I too use the BCF2000 at home, and the nanoKontrol2 on the road, and with a very similar configuration to yours 🙂 Good thing Cubase reads the incoming MIDI CC data correctly!

Odd how I was just saying yesterday how NONE of the current RU-vidrs ever show the Environment Window - If you love '8bit' then love the Environment Window - old school computer knowledge! I've been in computing 40 years and make my own Arduino control surfaces and I learnt something! :D

I would desperately love a tutorial on how to setup the nanokontrol 2 in Logic because it's driving me nuts, and I know I'm not the only one!

I was having trouble too, then I downloaded the Korg Kontrol Editor. You can just enter the values you want and write the data to the nanokontrol 2.

I found a setup vid that has worked for me, someone called Gh0stwrit3r on RU-vid. Now works for me, I think it was going wrong because i didn't delete the control surface from logic, amongst other things. Check the vid anyway works a treat

Just saw this video and the comments. I've been trying to use it with Reaper for a month. Too many 3rd party add ons and special settings. Never really got it to work. Totally frustrated. I gave up and I've been trying to sell it for 1/2 price of new just to try and recover some of my cost. ;-(

For the the new Behringer X-Touch (which he linked for his old model): If you want to buy it, to use the faders as a mod-wheel for CC1 and CC11 etc. then don't. The new model does not allow you to assign the controller unit with any midi traffic.

I love spitfire's libraries and I have the same issue with the volume defaulting at -6db. I went through all the main patches I use and resaved them with the volume up to 0db. Just 1 less thing to think about when you start writing. Cheers!

another nice trick is to assign one fader cc#32. you can then use this to scroll through all the available articulations in the instrument. doesn't matter how many there are...first one will be at the bottom of the fader throw and the last one will be at the top, all evenly spaced out. also...if you find 0db isn't loud enough for the kontakt instrument volume, hit the wrench, select "controller" in the "instrument options" window and use the "midi controller #7 volume range" dropdown to select "-infinity...6db". then you can push it all the way up to +6db if the instrument is really quiet. don't forget to save the setting, so before hitting the wrench to return to the UI, look just above the meters and you'll see a "save" button, which will do a quick save for you.

Usually controller manufacturers have a piece of software to help create custom MIDI CC profiles like this. Korg has one called Korg Kontrol Editor but even till quite recently they hadn’t updated it to 64bit...so it just wouldn’t open up on macOS Catalina..😒 So this is super useful !! Cheers Dan ! I use the Korg editor all the with Mac Big Sur without any problems. You just need to make sure to connect the nanokontrol after your mac is running or else it isn’t recognised.

@@terrycaster4976 I tried it again just now...the app icon has the 🚫 mark on it, which comes up for all the incompatible 32 bit apps. When I try to open it, it says the developer needs to update the app. So I"m wondering if something has changed in Big Sur 🤔. Has anybody got any insights into this??

I'm hoping that others will start using Spitfire's standard, so that these devices will be even more powerful. I use my iCON Platform M+ in Reaper. Huge motorized faders, and excellent build quality. Absolutely essential for any composer.

On Logic 10.8 the Environment is not available in window view, you have to press Command 0 to access it. I've been trying to find a tutorial on the Logic environment for months! I use an M Audio Trigger Finger as a Faderbox/Keyswitcher and manually changing the info because the old software is outdated and wont run on modern PCs or Macs. I knew there was a way to get into the environment and change it but not sure of what parameters to change. Thanks Dan!

I find, that we can edit bcf2000 before connection with logic, and assign cc numbers on bcf display with buttons) maybe this is more easy)) but right now I'm going to buy this controller, and can't find drivers for Mac OS. Can it work without? 🚨🚨🚨

Hi Dan, great videos! You focus on using the Behringer as a midi control surface for expression etc. in Spitfire apps. But it is, I believe, first and foremost, a DAW controller with Mackie/HUI protocol capability... From what I understand, the two (generalised midi control and DAW control) are not possible at the same time: for example if you're using the DAW functionality as mix, then flipping back to control expression in Spitfire isn't going to work unless you do some messy midi channel hacking. So the question is, is it easy to switch? I see the (similar) icon platform m+ has a 'user defined'mode for this purpose which can be switched to by restarting the unit. Thanks!

That was so useful Dan. Many thanks. I bought a Novation Launch Control XL hoping to use it as a midi controller in Logic using their Components app but it seems to resist being to set up as anything other than a mixer (I still can't get the sends to work reliably). Hopefully this will get me a little closer to where I want to be. I find Environment an arcane interface but I suppose that's down to me not putting the time into deep diving MIDI in general. Can anyone point me to some further resources?

I use to be a Logic user until Apple dropped PC support, so I wondered if you have any tips on setting up in Cubase, or a pointer to somewhere that does for the BCF2000 and Korg Nano Control?🤪😊

If you wiggle the parameter in logic with your mouse, you can then go Logic > learn and wiggle the fader and that’s all set! Also worth noting that the behringer is now discontinued and replaced by the x-touch. Be careful about which one you buy - only one has motorised faders (and I can’t remember which!)

Are the faders of the X-Tour motorized even when operating in midi mode? Will the faders follow along with modulation and expression for example?

The best midi controller is likely the one you’ve already got (unless you’re bend new at it). I use an Allen & Heath K2 and love it

@@gggulmira I like them because they’re long and accurate. There’s so many pads, buttons and knobs on it that can be programmed for whatever. I have articulations mapped to the pads as well to change the voicing of an instrument as I play (mostly for leads), and some other synth VSTs. Trouble is they’re discontinued now and wicked expensive. A cheaper and better option is likely available now!

Thanks for the tips Dan! Just a quick question. So would you say CC7 is something that shouldn't really be tampered with once you've got your desired level. Like at the moment I kind of use it a lot, as in when I want my instrument louder or quieter or even for fade outs, I automate it using CC7. Should I be using CC11 for this instead?

Hi Ewan, there's one feature that differentiates them for me and it's this: for Kontakt instruments that have build in effects that tail away after note releases (like reverb, echoes etc), when you pull down CC11, it reduces that dry signal but allows the reverb tail to ring out. CC7 adjusts the volume of the entire instrument track. Of course, you might be using a bus for reverbs, in which case it won't matter too much. CC7 is globally understood to be instrument volume where some sample libraries boost their volumes to crazy high percentages when the fader is at the top (for example, BBCSO is at 400% volume at the top, Keyscape has a boost of 10dB). In my experience here, sometimes this can cause unwanted clipping. CC11 protects you from this potential issue

Hello Dan! Excuse my ignorance but I really need your help ... I bought the same Behrninger BCF2000 equipment because your video has inspired me a lot ... I even bought the Spitfire samples. The problem is that I can't get all my equipment to work. Please if you can briefly explain how the cable connections go and everything else. I would be very very very grateful if you would help me with this. I have created as is the engine with the 8 channels for midi. I think I have tried everything that my mind can imagine and there is no way that I understand where my fault is. Thank you very much Dan and please help me

do you think you could make a short vid on setting up the bcf 2000 for orchestral programming in general? Its driving me crazy. Like for the mod wheel on my midi keyboard i can just right click the parameter in kontakt, learn midi cc automation and then just wiggle themed wheel, but this doesn't seem to work for the faders on the bcf and I've watched every video on the internet about setting up the bcf.... edit : I figured it out but when i try to control two different faders at once, one parameter will move up and down smoothly but the other one will glitch and jump around

Huh...I couldn't get it to work. The only CC info that changed was the first one (in my case, the first slider changed from #91 to #1). The others simply stayed with their original CC's, despite me duplicating the steps you had outlined. And the mystery continues. I spend most of my musical life trying to get my equipment to work properly and it invariably translates to wasted afternoons!

Hi Dan, great video as usual ! I have one question... as far as you know, is there any motorized controller that we can use to program midi expressions/parameters ? The purpose is mainly when you have to retouch or change an expression curve, having a motorized controller it would let you start re-programming from the exact value already recorded (hope it's clear). There are plenty of good motorised fader banks (the Behringer ones are decent), but most people don’t tend to use these for midi programming. Not sure why actually

If you look at one of the last comments here you can easily see why, usually fader banks are made for audio volume control and don't respond to midi events like CCs. At least (as far as I know) Behringer and Faderports don't. Really don't know why nobody use motorized faders for midi parameters control. Did you ever use one ?

guys I need help. I'm really tired to print automations with the mouse and I'm looking for a fader controller. I'm in a small room and I don't have a lot of space. I've seen scheps uses the fader port. but I would like to use it also as controller for volume/esperssion/vibrato with the sample libraries. I'm on a MacBook pro i5 with 16gb , I use logic pro. please help

My BCF2000 doesn’t show up in the midi environment. Does anyone know why? I used to be able to use “learn” for dyn and exp but now it won’t even let me do that

@Dan Keen Music I have watched this a dozen times and can't seem to get it to work. At 4:32 when your input view window first appears it looks different than mine. When I press my MIDI keyboard the info coming up in the box is for the note (C1, D1, etc) and to the right of it, the velocity. Why does yours have the midi CC information? Also I have an eighth note icon and you don't. At 5:39 when you show what the finished version should look like, I'm seeing another Input View window coming out of the physical input and connected to all of the transformers. How did you generate that other input view window? When I add transformers, no other input window appears. I've called Apple and they still can't figure it out. Any ideas? (Logic 10.5, Catalina 10.15.6, updated Behringer drivers)

very good idea.... hard to find anything like this for the complete novices and newcomers to midi.. however I still think your talking in terms that most wouldn't understand. Effects names... what CC is what transport controls are... most newbies won't have a clue what they are or mean. So I thik you probably lost most of your audience in the first 5 minutes.
