Also thanks to Taekwondo Bro for coming down to help with the range test and review
In todays video we take the Midland XT
511 with a Uniden HT to a local park to simulate a camp ground. Up first a range tesr followed by a review.
Overall the Midland as well as FRS radio servixe is an excellent choice for local communications. Camping, hiking or emergency situations FRS GMRS is an exxellent choice.

The use of the long wire attached to the base of the antenna would be of no use to improve receive or transmit. You would have to attach an external antenna to the center wire of the antenna input. The problem is the wire is too long for the 462 megahertz band. The antenna attached to the radio is measured in a ratio proportionate to the frequency. The only solution without getting into the radio case is to encourage Midland to replace that antenna with a removable one in future models. Then you could launch a wire slim Jim antenna like the N9TAX into a tree or suspend it from a pole.
@640amthemix
@640amthemix 2 года назад
Thank you for the tip to extend the range. The radio would be more useful if you can replace the antenna. Also an AM Broadcast antenna that rotates like my Realistic SW-100. Thanks for sharing 👍

An external antenna can make a HUGE difference. Height is MIGHT in VHF /UHF. For every 3 db of gain on an antenna , you double your effective power. So a 6db gain antenna will make a 5 watt signal as though it was 20 watts. ( 5 x2= 10. 10x2= 20)
@640amthemix
@640amthemix 2 года назад
I agree and thanks for your comments. This particular radio there is no way to add an external antenna, but it still exceeded expectations.

Love the video you made about as far as radios they're affordable everybody can get them without a license also like the videos you did with the CB sideband am definitely a must basically in a scenario where things are about to go the walk for example weather circumstances adverse economic scenario and a lot of things seems to be hitting our way having communication is becoming an asset yes and FRS radio will be good for local contact gmrs after running tests on many of these types it definitely you can achieve more distance if you were to go line of sight from one mountain to another Mountain you should be able to communicate as long as you can see that point you have a flashlight pointed out at night if you can see that flashlight on the other Mountain then you should be able to communicate with that person the highest I did in a FRS radio rating was about 52 km somewhat 30 MI basically 30 miles distance however I did a test out of UBC and my friend was up on the mountain that was about 1 mi up in British Columbia signal went through it went through gmrs frequencies Channel 21 FRS frequencies channel 10 signal went through nicely of course how to put the monitor button on off so it would eliminate the squash and the signal came in yes by adding another antenna to your system it definitely will help you transmission however you need to know your frequencies you freaking see it's 462 and 467 megahertz that is about 19 in wire or 70 cm wavelength roughly the closer you come to that wavelength the better your resonate you can also hook up a wire to the negative side of your battery holder this will act as a counterpoise it should help propagate the signal if you antenna is too short yes you can put another one it should definitely increase the range by doing some testing you can do more than 8000 however it will have to do with line of sight remember also that there is the curvature of the Earth each 3 MI you lose about 6 ft on a straight line therefore the number is made change if you on a straight line you will need to adjust your height The Next Step you may want to try are also the m u r s frequencies they work $154 MHz 151 MHz those are license free and the United States of course they do some tests on the FRS needed to check out the range of these small transceivers and it's still quite impressive what they can do not to be underestimated when the antenna are modified it will increase your range also did some test on the m u r s frequencies even though I'm in Canada I believe in testing these frequencies of an emergency would happen you have to test the range in case you're stuck somewhere ultimately as well the CB frequencies am skip can go quite a bit of distance okay with a TRC 216 portable walkie-talkie I managed to reach from Vancouver City Burnaby SFU SFU University managed to reach Victoria British Columbia it's about it's a nice 50 MI 60 MI conversation wasn't bad even though RFI came in affecting signal quality you can always get yourself also a UV 82 baofeng radio these videos can be programmed by chirp of course they're supposed to be a ham radio you're allowed to listen but you're not allowed to transmit however if something serious does happen you will have the capacity of transmitting more power this is definitely a plus you need to have access to marine frequencies repeaters VHF UHF FRS gmrs all of these can be programmed in the radio you will need to have the programming cable you will need to download chirp software make sure you get the real programming cable for these radios it will make a difference in the installation and you'll be able to have the power of at least one to five Watts unofficially after doing some test some people are mentioning Nick can do 112 km distance with one Watt those are extreme circumstances however these radio signal can travel quite a bit of distance as well they will not do skip like the CB I made a conversation on a Citizen band radio long time ago from New Westminster British Columbia to California the radio I'm talking to you about is a programmable radio made in China it is one of the most affordable ones you can always try the uv5r this is the other cheap model out there and you can program both of them to be going on the gmrs channels even though they say it's not really legal a lot of people are doing it a lot of people have these videos program the batteries are rechargeables they're cheap as long as you keep it kind of like unofficially that you have that model you'll basically be able to do a bit of range when you're transmitting FRS of course you limited to 500 MI it can still travel quite a bit of distance I did 52k with mine 30 miles it was a Uniden from Canadian Tire 73 all the best and keep your freaking seats open basically don't limit yourself to only one type of radio have UHF which is FRS gmrs VHF m u r r s and of course citizen Bend megahertz 27 MHz you may want to have a ham radio handy a ham radio if it's full band can also go on the citizen Bend you will have more power and better filtering system even for listening you'll get better reception you'll need of course land and you'll need to have a long antenna you'll be able to pick up shortwave and if the s*** hits the fan you will have a ways of communicating outside

Excellent testing on your part on line of sight. All these radios services (CB, FRS, GMRS, MURS, and HAM) are all good, but I prefer CB for a couple of reasons. First it's good for local and Long range (skip). No license needed. Equipment is generally affordable BTW I'm working on a buying guide video to get into CB. And now with FM CB rivals FRS/GMRS and others in sound quality. In the end they are all good in case of emergency like what we are watching in Florida U.S.A. with the hurricane strike. Thanks for commenting.

A 5 watt GMRS radio can go a LOT farther than that IF there is an unobstructed line of sight. My 3 watt GMRS HTs can hit a repeater 30 miles away, no problem. Even my 2 watt radios can reach my daughter’s house a mile across town. On the other hand concrete and steel structures can drastically reduce that, and cannot go through hills at all. In general I can get 2-5 miles in simplex (radio to radio) mode.

Due to curiosity and me being given one of these a while back, before I got my 5watt Retevis ht, I had to look this thing up by FCCID. (mmaxt511) The output power is 1.5w & .2w. So these days, an frs radio can have up to 2 watts output, meaning that this radio doesn't actually need to be licensed to be used. If the antenna were detachable, it would need to be licensed due to that fact.
@640amthemix
@640amthemix 2 года назад
GMRS is not my strong point but that's how I understood it. The detachable antenna at any power requires a GMRS license.
@RhythmicSensations
@RhythmicSensations 2 года назад
@@640amthemix yup, that is correct. However some Chinese companies have fixed the antenna into place on their GMRS radios with a set screw which can be removed and the antenna replaced. These radios have an fccid tag and simply turn the power down for frs 8-14, which means someone has let another issue slip through.
