Shame that they didn't name-drop James Leo Herlihy for writing the original novel Midnight Cowbow, a tormented beautiful book that lent itself so well to this adaptation.

Ross and MacGraw are like sisters

When it came time to cast actors for MC, the director, John Schlesinger, really wanted Canadian actor Michael Sarrazin to play Joe Buck, but MS was already committed to another project, so JS very reluctantly cast Voight, who had much trouble doing an East Texas twang and had to take a tape recorder down there to work on his accent. Years later, Voight met up with his friend Jane Fonda and admitted that he was hard up for work; Fonda was getting ready to star in Coming Home and knew that Hal Ashby, its director, still hadn't found a Luke because the A-list actors were busy. Ashby said no when Fonda suggested him but time ran out and Ashby brought JV on board. Can't blame Voight if he feels Hollywood has disrespected him over the years.
