I came here to watch this because of the Jim Cornette drive thru. I am glad i did. Every young person that wants to get into the wrestling business should study this match. The in ring psychology and body language were performed by masters.
Cornette’s drive thru brought you here and you don’t know who the Midnight Express is? Begging for a time out was very common among heels of the 80’s. If this is your first taste of the Midnight Express I suggest looking into their feud with the Rock n Roll Express. Probably the best tag team rivalry of all time. Cornette getting his face smashed into a green cake is one of the best moments in wrestling television of all time.
@@robertschumann7737 I was a fan of the Midnight Express starting in 1987, but Cornette's Drive Thru brought me here, because I never saw any of their matches from their Mid-South/Houston days. This was a great feud, starting with the Midnights tarring and feathering Magnum TA, and the matches had so much heat. And you're right about the cake, which they did again in 1988 with the Fantastics.
Rules in general meant more back then. Yeah the rules were fake, but it added strategy. Roll out, get a foot on the rope, appeal to the ref etc. Made it seem like a wrestling contest, not like today where it’s just a string of choreographed moves strung together into a dance.
For my money inside the ring no one was better all around than Bobby Eaton. Could not talk and certainly didn’t live in the gym but everything he does is perfection.
Came for the Jim Cornette watch along. This match is what Jim is talking about when he complains about what AEW and to a certain extent WWE doesn't understand about ring psychology. This is how you tell a story in the ring. You don't need flips, fireworks or special effects. This match has the crowd captivated no camera tricks needed. This is professional wrestling, the made money but didn't need to spend it all on extras to try and divert attention away from a flawed product. Not a empty seat in the house.
all of those typical/forced chants are shit. compared to nothing. they are all awful, and not hearing them is one of the few things I enjoy about there being no fans allowed right now
This is/was a phenomenal match! Super hot crowd, great selling and storytelling, and Magnum was fantastic here! In fact, everyone was great here. Magnum & II had a lot of fire here and the Midnights were great heels. I love old school southern wrestling & I wish some modern day companies (I'm looking at you AEW) would study these matches and see how it's supposed to be done. BTW Cornette's Drive Thru brought me here!
1:03 what a recovery from the botched spot. midnight express one of the best, if not THE best, tag team of all time. this version of the midnight express was by far the best version.
No pyro. No Titantron. No highlights package. Not even a ring skirt. And duct-taped turnbuckle pads. Still a great match and was worth admission. Side-note: How old was Wrestler2 here? Jesus Christ he looked like he was pushing 70 and still went 15-minutes full tilt.
I've watched the videos of the progression of this feud, from when the Midnights tarred and feathered Magnum, up through 3 matches, with so much heat. This is what's missing in modern day "sports entertainment." They don't know how to book angles like they did in the territories. Back then the people came because of the heat, and today they watch for the spots. And keep in mind, Jim Cornette was a whopping 21 years old when this took place, and he worked this like he was veteran with the years of experience of a Bobby Heenan or Lou Albano.
I was also brought here via Jim Cornette's Drive Thru. I am loving the comments of the Cult of Cornette Invasion here in the channel. This match is amazing. For someone that grew up in Portugal where we only got WWF, and by 1994-1995, this is pure gold. It looks somewhat unreal to me, of so good that it is, and i never had the chance to see when i was younger. Thanks a lot for the video, Rob D.
Great improv by Eaton when II took away his chair spot, he barks an audible to II, and gets it in with another chair and Magnum knows exactly what to do
Road Warrior Buck and Balding Buck need to watch this about 150x. Its depressing what has happened to our sport of kings. We have 4 "Men" working here instead of the 16 year old punk kids we have today.
my brother had me thinking Mr. Wrestling 2 was our dad...my dad was in the navy and would be gone like 2 months out of the year but I was to young to know why he would be gone...all I knew was he always walked around the house with white underwear and no shirt on. then I would watch Wrestling and my brother would tell me to get excited and Root for our dad
@@shaolin1derpalm "Thank you for Cuba" is a common misinterpretation of Jim Cornette's phrase "Thank you, fuck you, bye!" from the theme song for Cornette's Drive-Thru podcast. The way it is sung kind of sounds like "Thank you for Cuba!"
In 1984 the NWA champion was still a traveling champion. There was talk that TA might get the belt from Ric Flair. Two months after this match Two and TA would split and have a feud between themselves. After that, what likely would have happened would be TA would lose a loser-leave-town match, go to a different territory, and work as a heel. At least that was the plan in 84. The problem was that by 86 Crockett would be the only NWA promotion still in business. There wouldn’t be a traveling NWA champion anymore.
I always thought Mr. Wrestling II made a poor choice in the color of his trunks. He looks like an old man in a diaper out there. I liked him better after he turned heel. His gravelly voice and intense promo style fit better as a heel. Absolutely hated Cornette as a baby face in the late 80’s.
