At the Summit in Houston, Jan, 1979. NWA Title Bout. Harley slams Andre YEARS before Hogan & does it WAY better, as Hogan's looked more like a hip toss or something. Please comment if you like it & want to see more!
Frank Valois was the closest drinker to Andre , capable of 60+ beers in a setting , Dick Murdoch was done after 27 .....Capt Lou quit drinking beer at 6 and switched to Vodka .
I do believe Harley could drink 30 beers pretty regularly . Me ? I am 292 lbs and I am finished after a 6 pack ...I hate cheap beer ; its bloaty .... I have finished fifths of Jagermeister and stayed on my feet .
It is so good to see, that Andre was not just strong and heavy, he was also a brilliant technician. Compared to the Great Khali from modern times and other very large and heavy wrestlers, Andre is light years ahead.
Andre the Giant was a good wrestler especially in the 70's. Bret Hart in a interview with Stone Cold said Andre doesn't get enough credit for being a good worker.
@@orangesilver4568It's so obvious in these threads who has a clear understanding of Andre's entire history. Those people are researched and respectful. So many people love Andre. And then you hear those who are triggered. Andre was awesome. Period.
André already had a lot of wear and tear on him in 1979, but he could still wrestle a match. Sadly, the era of him doing dropkicks and moving quickly was history at this point. People who only know him from the '80s and early '90s will never understand what he meant to wrestling fans in the '70s. He was only 32 when he had this match with Harley - he might as well have been 10 or 15 years older, you can already see the damage he had done to his body over the years.
It's the Era of Men ..., Real men that is sorely missed !! Now to be a Man is Frowned upon and they have to I slate you and Bully your manhood from a distance .... they want all Sis men..
Having a chance to see andre as a kid was both wonderful and amazing.i grew up around comics, mythology and the incredible hulk tv series(which was actually out that year),and he was all those things come to life.R.I.P. BOSS
If they are actually savage, is it proper to call it selling? I thought selling was making an otherwise tame or even inconsequential maneuver seem more devastating than it actually is.
RU-vid has a far better selection of wrestling even if it was from yesterday. Much better than the little girl wrestling they have on tv today.these guys would take those pansy wrestlers out to the woodshed and teach team a good old faction lesson in real wresling.
I wat h so much fn youtibe it's kinda crazy Everything is here. My favorite movies, every documentary I can think of, anything from my youth, your youth, jesus youth lol. Crime shows , true crime shows. History, Science, math, WRESTLING! You name it. Love RU-vid
This is just about the time that the growth hormone was making him sick and his body was just beginnibg to betray him . He was so used to pain that he walked around for a week with a broken ankle before waking up one morning to find he could no longer bear weight on it . Thats where the myth about breaking his ankle getting out of bed came from . His height went from 7 feet to 6'10.5" but no one noticed because his girth was getting out of hand at 540 lbs . If you look he has a big stomach but there is no jiggle to it . His internal organs were growing faster than his muscle and bone did . Giant sized liver and circulatory system made him the undisputed drinking champion of the world . When Andre died he was only 6'9" but still over 500 lbs . He died of congestive hesrt failure . It just could not keep up any more . Andre's back had two big iron rods in it , his knees and neck were bone on bone and full of spurs . If only Andre did not fear the scalpel he could have halted his growth when his height was 7' and his weight was 385 lbs . He thought they would botch the surgery and he would die of a stroke or be in a wheel chair so he decided to live as well as he could for as long as he had .
First fifteen minutes of the match Harley managed to slam Andre before the end of the first round and boy it took time to get Andre back up on his feet back then he was doing then than he did in his final years
it's rare to see a match where it feels almost even against Andre, but Harley Race was the real deal back then; fearless, tough as nails and fully willing to go toe to toe with the Giant for a full hour. Hats of to two of the greatest wrestlers of all time.
What I love here. No commentary, no acrobatics, no steroids, pretty much non stop wrestling moves and holds. Can ANYONE imagine this in 2019? BTW, HR looks like a 55 gallon drum with arms.
ukrandr I agree with you on that my friend. You said it so perfectly! Race was my all time favorite. A true legit tough as hell guy in and out of the ring.
23:40 I don't think I have ever seen anyone else throw his opponent over the top rope INTO the ring, with practically one hand. Andre the Giant is right.
Wow!!!! What an impressive slam by Harley Race! In the WWF I had always thought that he was overrated but now I'm convinced that Race was no joke. What an amazing wrestler!
The only thing is they should have done the slam in the ring where the people could see it. Going by the reaction of the audience, I don't think most of them saw it.
My grandma used to tell us about the time she went to a wrestling show in Houston back in '72 or '73 and ended up in the back talking to Race. One thing led to another and they had a one night stand. Apparently he was too drunk to keep it up long but he was quite gifted with his tongue. Why she told us this every few years I'll never know.
@@aewreddit2220 who is disputing that? Do you feel like you are a genius who just discovered this. Here is another bombshell, movies are also fake, thank me later Shelly.
First time I've seen Andre the Giant in his prime. Going up against another big guy Harley Race. Harley took some brutal blows from Andre that would otherwise result in pin fall from any smaller wrestler and or wrestler of weak will. Harley dished them out as well keeping the Giant on his toes. For them being both big guys they are very athletic and have plenty stamina being this is a 3 Fall Championship match. Loved it from beginning to end, new school can't top old school, just can't.
@@BBBYpsi Yes, he was already a lot slower and much less athletic in 1979. I wish he could have retired before it was too late and he became a complete physical wreck in the '80s.
been binge watching between modern day wrestling and old school (like this one), man i gotta say old school looks more realistic than today’s pro wrestling. nowadays it just looks like a stunt show compared to this
Don't forget, Harley Race was an 8x NWA Heavyweight Campion, if at anytime, Andre could've been any promotions Champion, but there was nobody on earth who was gonna beat him! Andre made careers, he knew sports entertainment before anyone figured it out! The wrestling world, every man who ever came into any ring in the world, owes everything to Andre!! The real "Boss"!!!
I met Harley at his gym bunch of years ago. As we walked around and looked at his pictures, the body slam of Andre was one he specifically pointed out to me and mentioned it was way before Hogan. I enjoyed meeting him and had a great chat.
I'd say mid to late 70s, early to mid 80s he was heavier n slower but still able to move around, around 85 86 is when the health issues catch up with him.
Someone said Harley Race and Meng (Haku) are the only 2 men he ever feared. Harley Race said Meng was the only man he ever feared. Meng slapped the interviewer for asking.
@@DeeEllEff Yeah not a ton of wrestlers back then had tattoos. It was common in the navy and marines and stuff though. My grandpa who would be ten years older than Harley had an Eagle on his forearm similar in size from when he was in the Navy
No one wanted to here the commentator anyway.they usually mess up the matches anyway.harley looks like a small child compare to Andre. But they both were great fighters.
Considering the announcer for this match would have been Paul Boesch, we are all very lucky that his audio is not present. Heckuva promoter, but horrible announcer.
its wild how wwf sold Hogans slam at WM3 as such a big deal! this crowd acted like it was nothing and didnt boo or cheer but at WM3 the crowd popped like you wouldn't believe
Now you have cosplay "entertainers" who want to be referred to as performance artists. Today's wrestlers have made a joke of the legends who have come before them.
funny how 10 years later, both of those wrestlers would find themselves in that same exact arena for the 1989 edition of the WWF Royal Rumble, but in different matches while being managed by Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. RIP to Andre and Race.
I had the pleasure to sit and talk to Harley in the mid 80s. My brother and his son were competing in a high school wrestling tournament. He was just sitting on the high school gym bleachers. Very nice guy.
I'm still in awe at just how BIG Andre (RIP) was! I just bought the biography on his life. I'll let you know what I think. Harley Race (RIP) was one of those guys that EVERYONE respected. Ric Flair calls him the toughest man he'd ever wrestled, and Harley could (to coin a Jim Cornette phrase) "stretch half the locker room" if he had to.
Ric Flair also said he wouldn't be scared to fight any amount of guys if he had 2 guys with him, as long as those 2 guys were Harley Race and Wahoo McDaniel.
Great to see Andre moving around so well he actually seemed to be having a good time but in later years it was painful to watch poor Andre try and get threw a match
The beginning of the end was his ankle break. Couple of years later his body began to break down bit by bit. His medical condition was always going to be a huge factor too obviously.
It's nice to see Andre being able to display his actual wrestling skills. Those wrist locks, kimuras and chicken wings were no jokes! He could've easily ended Harley's career right then and there. Solid wrestling on behalf of The Giant.
That's a strange thing to say, considering every 25 minute wrestling match has multiple opportunities for a wrestler to end their opponents career if they choose not to protect the other person they're in the ring with... Brock Lesnar could end careers every time he gets in the ring... Even Orange Cassidy or Adam Cole could end a career if they chose to. Andre knew what business he was working in.
6:02 HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!!!! been watching wrestling 40 years and that must have been the hardest slap ANY wrestler EVER took. Bless Race and Roussimoff. Absolute legends.
It's hard to understand from a modern perspective how huge this match was back then. This was the NWA World Champion Harley Race, the best wrestler in the world who at this point had been champion for about 2 and a half years, against arguably the biggest attraction in pro wrestling at this time, Andre the Giant who was undefeated, and had never been pinned or submitted for the last 7 YEARS. The only equivalent I could think of in modern day would be if Roman Reigns and Kenny Omega had a match, and even that sells it short.
Harley was.such an incredible wrestler. He made it look so real. This is why he’s considered to be one if not the best of all time. Of course Andre is as always is great. This is truly a great match and a hidden gem of a video to watch. Thank you for posting this.
@@messyfilms6325 no it isnt but its athletic and entertainment. They sustain many injuries, concussions happen a lot and chiropractors get rich. Facts.
Very entertaining match involving two legends. I enjoyed the no commentary as well. This blows away the wrestling today and it’s sad it will never be the same.
That Harley Race was a naturally strong man. There are some out there just like him. I once met a old skinny man in his 70's who was able to move and load a old bath tub the ones that were made of that old heavy material. It had to weigh I don't know how much but me and my friend were in our 30's both strong and could barely move it together. He said when he was young that he could pick up 1500 pounds. I believed him after I seen him move the old cast iron bath tub.
you know, it's weird to watch pro wrestling without all the announcers yelling the whole time. Pretty cool to hear the crowd and the slams, quite the thing.
After the slam and with the crowd booing loud as hell you can still Race yelling Haa-cha haa-cha. God this is absolute gold!!!!! So great and so funny!!!! And at 14:35 when he is walking around on the floor!!! Haa-cha haa-cha
man super picture great f'n upload! there's a ton of great video from the Summit, the journey video and the who from 75 i think is one of my favorites. again great upload!
How does a match this important just get lost among hundreds of thousands of others?? I walked away from a Ernie Ladd vs. Andre match and came back to see Harley slamming Andre outside the ring!! I was shocked as I had thought that Hogan, in WrestleMania 3 was the 1st and only guy to do this. Hell yes, bring on more of anything similar in age and more importantly, importance to the history of wrestling. Thanks so much for exposing the myth that Hogan's hip-toss was the 1st time Andre was was slammed.
Andre was slammed by any of the guys he liked , hed tell them to and help them because they couldnt actually do it alone...there was no internet then and most werent taped , so it wouldnt be known around the world each time , but many guys in shoot interviews have said Andre would call it in the ring...the other guy just gets low and Andre puts his hand down on their leg to push off while almost jumping up into position...its not nearly as hard to get someone up when theyre already in motion to help you and theyll push off
Thanks for uploading this... matches like these are super rare in such good quality 2 of the greatest of all time and ots always good to see Andre in his prime when he could still move like a lion ..Great pro wrestling match
Hell of a strength move for Race to slam Andre. Sure, Andre let himself get slammed--notice how he puts one arm down when he's just about to be slammed to break his fall somewhat--and Race doesn't really slam him hard to the ground, just sort of lets him down a bit more gently. Great selling by both champions. Race was one tough, strong, SOB. Not strong as in weight-training strong, but natural strength and strength picked up through wrestling. Andre was just terrifyingly powerful at that time. Pity he didn't live that long, and now Race is gone. RIP to both men.
@@raymondphillips7107 Yeah, agreed. Race could be a mean one if the situation called for it, but in a match, he did his best to sell and not hurt anyone. A true pro.
@@jdbankshotThere was an incident when Andre the Giant took a Dump 💩💩💩 on Bad News Brown. I Don't Think it was Deliberate , I think Andre had Loose Bowels & couldn't hold it. 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
@@davidwesley2525 yup, heard about that. i think bad news talks about it in a shoot interview. it was not at all intentional. still though, yuck. his love of farting in public is well documented.
My promise to myself . Whenever Carmella v Naomi ever appears anywhere on TV I will switch to the classics..bless you for the upload and saving our soul.
