It doesn't have to be Oscar worthy, but there are stories that enhance the game and stories that take away. Just look at Doom and Hotline Miami for examples of all action games that are enhanced by their story. No one is saying that you have to personally dislike the story, but for me and many others it got in the way of some enjoyment and that's a totally valid thing to mention in a review.

@@justsomeguy9230 yes, it is fair to mention if it detracts from enjoyment, but I will note that neither of those are beat 'em ups. I can't really think of any that MFE would've been inspired by, that have stories that aren't just goofy fun. and yeah, HLM is a clear influence on MFE, but not narratively, and that's fine. obviously not everything should have a narrative like HLM (not that you said as much), and frankly, I would prefer if games did not attempt to emulate HLM narratively. that kinda narrative is intriguing a few times, but the fundamental depravity is not something I want to sit with often.

@@justsomeguy9230 I'm not saying if you didn't enjoy a story don't mention it in a review, I saying the genre it's self has a ton of goofy or weird storys. Some with more silly elements some with more seriousness. Like river city girls, the girls are trying to find their boyfriends but end up stopping the yakuza. Streets of rage 4, you are trying to stop a massive gang and then the final boss jumps into a giant robot. Final fight, one of the fighters becomes the mayor of his city. Even the ones you said, doomguy started to kill all the demons because the killed his pet rabbit or stopped him from watch tv. Hotline miami, two racist janitors call up war veterans to kill a buch of Russian gangs and end up causing a nuclear war. But the way he said it at the end stuck out to me. He's didn't say "it's not for me", no he said it like this is the reason people shouldn't play this game. Which i just think is untrue, but that's just my opinion.

I normally don't consider a goofy plot to be inherently bad, but I felt like this game's goofy plot was. I've played Streets of Rage 4 and River City girls and I really liked the writing and scenarios for those goofy plots. So I think it was important to emphasize that this game's story isn't of that level.

Jake Baldino actually said the same thing, leading me to think there’s actually something to it. Maybe stop being thin, an inordinate amount of time and focus is spent on its story?

Pretty sure Minecraft was made by one guy as well. You'd be surprised how many games are done by one person. Dont feel like giving up. I mean u don't have to make one of these type of games but you're free to try!

@@ty_teynium Notch only worked solo on Minecraft for the first year or so of earnest development (setting up Mojang with several others after launching the public alpha). pretty big difference from that and Midnight Fight Express, which is mostly just one dude over several years and is a full release. but yeah, your point is mostly right. solo devs now have a lot at their disposal, even moreso than back in 2009.

Great game BTW, great for 30 min bursts and Im amazed at a small team pulling off what they did

The bathroom fight was incredible, putting plungers on guys faces then smashing them through sinks was goosebump inducing

They should call this game , "Krav Maga - The Game" lol

@@samueltrottier9947 tried it on Gamepass, and you can’t. You can turn off the screen shake and the screen flashes, but the cam still sways around like crazy for nothing outside of combat. Oh well. Got plenty of other games to play that don’t make me nauseous. Shame though.
