With Nerve (starring Emma Roberts and Dave Franco) opening today, I take a look at a similar movie featuring another all-night game played across a city - Midnight Madness.
Starring David Naughton and Michael J. Fox - along with Eddie Deezen, Paul Reubens, John Fiedler, Debra Clinger, and more - this movie will always be a guilty pleasure for me. It's one of my favorite bad movies.
Please support the Michael J. Fox Foundation at www.michaeljfo...

HBO showed this all the time, when my family first got cable TV in the early 80s. It's still a favorite of mine, and I also turned my kids onto it!

@@Katrinawitch I had a similar experience! My dad was very strict with what his ten kids were allowed to watch on television, so we watched a lot of PBS, after-school specials, Saturday morning cartoons, and Disney movies. One of the few programs we were allowed to watch on cable was “Fraggle Rock,” and “Midnight Madness” often played right after it. It was a Disney movie with very little in the way of nudity, bad language or violence, so Dad let us give it a try. My siblings and I fell in love with it. We rarely all agreed on anything, but on this we were unanimous. We watched it every chance we got. Fast-forward15 years, and I was shopping with my two children when I spotted a display case full of discount DVDs. To my delight, this was one of them! I was excited to share it with my kids in the hope that they’d like it, too…and just as I had back in the 80’s, they fell in love with it. It remains a favorite in our family.

This is my husband's all time favorite movie. He laughs like a hyena when the character says "Faga Beefy" As for the movie that made a HUGE impression on me when I was a kid... a movie from around the same time as Midnight Madness called "Times Square". It was about two teenage girls, one girl who grew up on the streets, and another girl who was the daughter of a politician who was trying to "Clean up Times Square". They run away from a psychiatric hospital together and make a home for themselves in an abandoned warehouse near Times Square. It was also the first movie that I saw Tim Curry in - he plays a radio DJ who finds out that the daughter of the politician who wants to clean up Times Square has run away. I was about 12 or 13 when I saw this for the first time in 84/85 and the politician's daughter reminded me a lot about myself - shy and unsure of herself. It was also when I started getting panic attacks and couldn't sleep so I'd stay up watching movies. I also started writing stories to try to keep myself from losing my mind completely. This movie was also a big inspiration to my writing. No other movie has made the same impact as Times Square, although a few have come close.

I remember this movie. My cousin and I would stay up late and watch this movie when we first got cable. We were way too young to watch it. But we laughed like crazy. Fast forward to my early 20’s couldn’t be more than 21. My then boyfriend now ex husband and I were at the traffic light waiting to get on the expressway after a night out. And what do I see zipping through the intersection... 5 white mopeds!! After that we had to go to blockbuster to find the movie 🤣🤣

I saw Midnight Madness when it came out at the theater in 1980 when I was 15. I liked it then, but rewatched it at 55 years old. Even though it is definitely a stupid movie, it is still awkwardly entertaining. I remember seeing Michael J.Fox then, and recognized that he shined on screen.. He really stole every scene he was in i.m.o. I forgot Pee Wee Herman was in this. Who knew then that Fox would become a huge star. David was also a heavily sought after actor at the time. American Werewolf in London is my favorite movie he was in. I still enjoyed the movie after revisiting it, but I'm a sucker for dumb comedies. The 80's was a great decade for these light hearted movies. Try doing a review for The Last American Virgin if you never have. Another great comedy from that era.

And it had Ed Deezen, the nerd us other nerds look up to from grease but maybe not emulate. I thought his girlfriend Debra Clinger was beautiful and I remember Michael J Fox as the kid who ended up helping to up save the team. He’s just a little older than me so I thought that was cool! I thought it was fun and that was the first time I’ve seen a scavenger hunt. They’re fun and I try to join one whenever i get the chance. The movie wasn’t Oscar worthy but they didn’t all have to be. Movies weren’t as expensive as they are now so people would go to hang and kill time.

I first watched this movie when I was in my teens, and still have a soft spot for it. It's one of the cheesiest films I've seen, and yet, it has a beating heart (mainly in the form of the bonding that takes place in the yellow team). Candy and Sunshine are super 'hot chicks' - what are they doing hanging out with a king-of-the-nerds character like Leon? The mass celebration and buffet at the end is pretty cool, but if Leon had turned down his audio equipment a tad and not bothered his neighbours or the police, would the celebratory party have just been Leon, Candy, Sunshine and the winning team? I love that the arcade machine was basically a Star Wars game, an X-Wing piloted against Tie fighters.

👍I saw this the same way. My broke family got HBO when midnight madness first came on cable. We were living in a dirty Florida town called Taft, and this movie was a great escape. We saw it on a Friday summer night, and it was magical. EDIT: The 15 people who couldn't solve the hunt, gave this a 👎.😋 P.s. As a trick driver, I shut down for a night in Palatka Fla about 4years back, and saw a bunch of teenagers playing a scavenger hunt. They all had to get a menu from the Sonic burger that was next to the mall. They seemed to be having so much fun.😁👍I was a bit envious. It also gave me flashbacks of this movie.

I vaguely remember this as a child....I always had a flashback of a movie with teams all in a different color.....Anyway, just watched a horror channel where this movie was mentioned...Apparently the Movie was the idea of Disney after they heard about a real game like this one that took place in LA for years underground. Once Disney got wind of such a game they got the idea to make it. Apparently one of the games had a tragic cave fall by one of the contestants, hence why it was on a horror channel. But yea, the game was around long before the movie.

While I haven't seen the movie, I think you are misleading in the title of your review since it wasn't a bad movie. If you want to review a BAD movie, I'd recommend Death Race 2000.

Death Race 2000 is a great bad movie. My dad used to call out point values for pedestrians who wandered into the street and almost got hit by a car for years.

Stumbled across this cause this is a movie i love a lot. But being an 80's person, go review Mr. Boogedy. Bud Bundy is in it.

The two twins were fun loving but the red team in general (especially Berle) were feminists. The white team were a debate group.
