Watch the female Barred Owl take a break from incubating her three eggs to grab a late-night delivery from her mate at the nest box. Listen to the owls hoot as they convene on the perch before taking off into the surrounding forest.
Stay tuned for another amazing year watching the Wild Birds Unlimited Barred Owls. Watch live at allaboutbirds.o... for information, highlights, and a link to the outside view.

*******************************
Jim Carpenter, President and CEO of Wild Birds Unlimited, has hosted a camera-equipped owl box in his wooded backyard since 1999. Set more than 30 feet high against the trunk of a pignut hickory tree, this Barred Owl box was first occupied in 2006. Since then, the box has hosted several nests, including successful attempts since 2013.
The camera system was updated in 2023 with a 1080p Axis P3265-LVE security camera and connected to Jim’s house via 200 feet of ethernet cable. To keep predators like raccoons from investigating the nest, aluminum flashing was wrapped around the tree. An infrared illuminator in the box means you can keep track of the owls’ comings and goings throughout the night (don’t worry-the light is invisible to the owls).
Since the birds aren’t banded, we can’t tell whether this is the same pair as in past years. Although male and female Barred Owls look alike in their plumage, females can be up to a third bigger than males. You can also tell the difference between them by watching their behavior; only the female incubates the eggs and chicks, but the male is responsible for the bulk of the feeding, ferrying prey items to the incubating female, and sharing them with her inside and outside of the box.

I just LOVE ❤️ to see this couple!! Watching them groom each other & hear Owl communicating with each other is a treat for me. I only HEAR them at home. For thousands of years they have done this & it's fascinating. Male & female owls love & take care of each other. We could use lesxsons like that in our World 🌎 today ... love one another. ❤❤❤❤❤🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉🦉

Wow, you guys must be clairvoyant. I'm looking at this video dated March 8th, 2024 and today is only March 6th, 2024. It's probably just a typo. :)

Wonder how often and for how long the female leaves the nest unattended?

Does the bright light in the box affect their night vision?

No all the live owl cams I watch all over the world, have lights to keep checking when eggs are made & hatch. It never seems to bother them. So their internal clock keeps them on schedule. (I am an observer NOT a scientist or Ornithology smart..... just love birds. ❤

The "bright" light is produced by an infrared LED lamp on their other camera feed in the nest box. Most of the light given off by this lamp is not in the visible light range. Although an owl has excellent vision at night, the range of light that they can detect is limited to the visual range. The infrared LEDs that make up the lamp will normally give off a slight glow that can be seen but it will not affect their night vision. The optical sensor of the cameras can "see" this infrared frequency of light and shows it as a "bright" area. On the other feed it illuminates the dark nest an allows us viewers to watch the nesting activities. I hope that helps relieve your worry. Enjoy the nesting season

Is that a light in the box? First time watching.

It's night vision so the things that appear brighter are actually darker in daylight/normal vision. No light in the box.

The note under the video says it's infrared and not visible to the owls
