Blue Sky Mine - Lyrics
My gut is wrenched out, it is crunched up and broken
My life that is lived is no more than a token
Who'll strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why?
If I yell out at night there's a reply of blue silence
The screen is no comfort, I can't speak my sentence
They blew the lights at heaven's gate and I don't know why
But if I work all day on the Blue Sky Mine
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
Still I walk up and down on the Blue Sky Mine
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)
The candy store paupers lie to the shareholders
They're crossing their fingers, they pay the truth makers
The balance sheet is breaking up the sky
So I'm caught at the junction, still waiting for medicine
The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine
Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night
And if the Blue Sky Mining Company won't come to my rescue
If the sugar refining company won't save me
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
But if I work all day on the Blue Sky Mine
(There'll be food on the table tonight)
And if walk up and down on the Blue Sky Mine
(There'll be pay in your pocket tonight)
And some have sailed from a distant shore
(And the company takes what the company wants)
And nothing's as precious as a hole in the ground
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
I pray that sense and reason brings us in
Who's gonna save me?
Who's gonna save me?
We got nothing to fear
In the end the rain comes down
In the end the rain comes down
Washes clean the streets of the Blue Sky town

This is a 5-star song in my opinion. So many themes covered in 4 minutes that really speak to the slavery to corporate greed that still exists today. This song is full of ironies but simple realities. Where we're looking for freedom (blue skies) we find a prison. Where corporations find riches in a mine, the worker finds a grave (nothing's so precious as a hole in the ground). In the end you're merely a unit of production that can be replaced.

This song is about the asbestos mine which was in Wittenoom which killed hundreds of people who had no idea about the effects if the material and the mining company's refusal to take the blame for their actions. The title "Blue sky mine" refers to the location of the mine on a mountain and the asbestos variety mined at the mine which was a blue colour.
@101Volts
@101Volts 7 лет назад
The mining in the area went on from 1939 to the 1960s, I wonder if the numbers are above 1,000. I was reading and apparently the whole operation wasn't even profitable (monetarily) for the company or they struggled to make money?

Communism will never work in the USA because the whole premise and founding of the nation is based on capitalism and individualism. These principles are certainly not 100% perfect but have proven to produce more wealth for more people than any other ideology in existence. When coupling capitalism with a good moral foundation and generosity it’s a clear winner. This album is a classic. It is right there on my short list of great albums. Midnight Oil is one of the most underrated bands in rock history. They do not receive the recognition they deserve. In my book they are in the same league as Pink Floyd and The Who. It will be my everlasting regret that I never saw them live. I keep hoping for a reunion tour, but Peter Garret is too busy being a politician, which is great because he is exactly the type of person I would want in charge of things. I love Midnight Oil. And "Blue Sky Mining" will forever one of my favorites. This song and "Forgotten Years" give me chills every time. Even after 33 years. I love Peter Garrett's dancing. He kind of has the Joe Cocker thing going. I just l9ve this album. There's not a bad song. And they tell the unvarnished truth. That is the best. When you hear real truth in music it is special.

I'm a Yank who lived in Oz the better part of a year. Most of my family were Yank coal miners. In the early 1900s my father's father immigrated from eastern Europe aboard an old ocean freighter looking for a better life. Instead, he spent most of it underground. My father was born in the living room of a coal mine company house. Like the old song goes, his father literally owed his soul to the company store. When my father became old enough he joined him, even surviving a couple of cave-ins. If he hadn't been able to enlist when world war two came along and realized his dream of becoming a pilot, I would have been digging alongside both of them. That's all there was in that one mule town in southwestern Pennsylvania. Many miners died in that era. Both of them had lung issues in later life. I haven't seen this powerful a musical movement since the days of the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. I hope Midnight Oil will keep it going for a long time to come. Peter Garrett is a Hero & Champion to me. Good on ya mates!!!" 👍

The political commentary is as valid today as it was then. E.g., The issues around stone masons dealing with manufactured kitchen stone benchtops. Different origins, same outcome. Same outcome. Silicosis disease of the lungs. Long term particulate manner from a silicon based media, causing chronic, obstructive and inflammatory consolidates in the lung tissue. Same issue, just different origins. All resulting in the same pathological outcome.

41 years ago I saw Midnight Oil at The Royal Antler Narrabeen. I have to thank the boys from The Strand house at Dee Why for taking me to the gig. It was late 1979, a warm night, people pouring jugs of iced water on each other and Peter Garrett's head, steam coming from the Lead Singer's bald cranium. Their music and especially their lyrics have made THE OILS one of the most important Rock bands in history. This new song ' Gadigal Land' is an instant Oils Classic. Words cannot describe how much I love this track. Sydney Radio station MMM played it every hour yesterday, so credit to them for that. Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good " I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face. Well done boys, this is excellent!

Such an iconic song both in Australia and abroad. Strikes a chord. And Wittenoom, which the song was written about is now officially all demolished and doesn't "exist" as a town anymore. That process started a few years ago in Western Australia's parliament with the Wittenoom Closure Act. Sad how humans destroy the environment and how that region may never be safe from asbestos fibres from tailings for years to come 😢
