ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART
“We, gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, coming from all points of the southern sky, make this statement from the heart:
Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under our own laws and customs. This our ancestors did, according to the reckoning of our culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from ‘time immemorial’, and according to science more than 60,000 years ago.
This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or ‘mother nature’, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors. This link is the basis of the ownership of the soil, or better, of sovereignty. It has never been ceded or extinguished, and co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown.
How could it be otherwise? That peoples possessed a land for sixty millennia and this sacred link disappears from world history in merely the last two hundred years?
With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood.
Proportionally, we are the most incarcerated people on the planet. We are not an innately criminal people. Our children are aliened from their families at unprecedented rates. This cannot be because we have no love for them. And our youth languish in detention in obscene numbers. They should be our hope for the future.
These dimensions of our crisis tell plainly the structural nature of our problem. This is the torment of our powerlessness.
We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country.
We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution.
Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self-determination.
We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history.
In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.”

I learned Australian history in the 80's at high school and it was all wrong...then discovered some truths at Uni in the 90's...since I remain astonished and appalled by the injustices that our government chooses to maintain...for what my voice is worth I am sorry and have always been impressed by the culture of indigenous Australians...Why is it never acknowledged how amazing it is to have a continuous culture that has lasted circa 60 000 years? Given all that you have suffered it is a credit to you and reveals amazing grace that you offer resolution under the themes of Makarrata.

the common law from ‘time immemorial’ With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it *under our own/(previous) laws and customs. (Simply to be, in propriety, alike with all people, accepted; understood with proper view; and *appreciated, for it's good.) This, our ancestors(those of old) did, according to the reckoning of our/(the) culture(at the time), from the Creation, according to the common law from ‘time immemorial’/(old testament), and according to (the)science (of)more than 60,000 years ago. "Aboriginal Old testament years have been of the Spirits and with respects the earth according to the ancient Spirit. Aboriginal and all people's years now, shall properly, according to those that know, treat the earth spiritually, with respect times of law and now time of freedom, through Christ Jesus our saviour, subduing the earth, as brothers and sisters".

Thank you from my heart for this beautifully illustrated and deeply moving spoken word piece. I am proud to acknowledge the inherent rights of First Nations people. They are an integral part of the history of this ancient land. Non-Indigenous Australians have much to learn from their culture, history and relationship to the land. We will all be enhanced and uplifted when we choose to walk with them in peace, understanding and truth.

I'm excited to see how the voice is going to help shape future policies and help incorporate more perspective in the discussion. I do not have a cultural background that is very connected to nature and I love to see people passionate about it. I also hope that the voice will bring a new, effective perspective on how to tackle the domestic violence and alcohol abuse that has been effecting some of the rural communities disproportionately, because all avenues to address the issue have been quite unsuccessful so far. I don't know the solution, but I am hopeful that the voice will be able to get things moving back in the right direction.

I know it’s probably just because of the way paint dries but I really like how they started off with people’s faces and then added the indigenous paint. As a white person who doesn’t have an understanding of the meaning of the paint, I got that human connection first with their face before the paint was added to show their heritage and connection to the land, it just made it more powerful to see that transition instead of my mind just focusing on the unfamiliarity of the paint. Also like how they incorporated and explained the colours of the flag for those who aren’t as familiar with it alongside the message of the Voice. Amazing work and skill.

I've heard about it but never read it, until this morning after Narelda Jacobs on channel 10 program Studio 10 , spoke about the statement of the heart. I think there should be an official petition for all Australians so they can sign and get behind this Statement, so we can all get behind and support our indigenous people, their preservation of culture, law and language in the present and future.

Imagine someone disagreeing with the Aboriginal who represents this voice. It could easily be turned into a situation where everyone in Parliament is afraid to disagree with one person simply because of the backlash they might receive for doing so, and ,if they weren't afraid of the backlash and they made a decision that went against the Aboriginal voice, imagine the reaction they would get. Does that sound unifying to you?

Thomas Mayo. He was a member of Referendum Working Group who wrote the referendum question, he’s been out and about spruiking the Voice for months, and he stood right next to Albo when he announced the referendum in March. So his words matter. And given he stood with Albo, it’s instructive to see how they compare with each other. Let’s have a look. Albo told the Parliament that “for most non-Indigenous Australians, this will make no difference to their lives.” Meanwhile Thomas Mayo is clear it will make a difference and you’ll be paying. He tweeted in 2020 “reparations, land back, abolishing harmful colonial institutions…all the things we imagine when we demand #UluruStatement #VoiceTreatyTruth”. Albo also told the Parliament “this referendum is about two things and two things only: recognition and listening.” He mustn’t have asked Mayo that because as Mayo told the successor to the Communist Party, the Search Foundation, that when it comes to the Voice, “political power must be a priority for us.” Then there’s Albo’s words when he announced the referendum wording back in March. He told Australians that “all of us can own an equal share of what I believe will be an inspiring and unifying Australian moment.” Again, Mayo has other ideas: “a politician or party that ignores, or legislates against that collective Voice will do so at their peril because we will be organised and ready.” Getting the picture? Even yesterday, Albo said this: “this change isn't about detracting from the 122 years of our democracy.” Perhaps he can explain how that matches up with Mayo’s pledge that they will use the Voice to “punish politicians that ignore our advice”, that “we are sick of governments saying no…we are going to use the rulebook of the nation to force them”, and “a politician or party that ignores, or legislates against that collective Voice will do so at their peril”. That sounds a lot like an attack on democracy. This is just a small sample of what’s really going on here. Albo is telling you one thing, but Thomas Mayo, standing by his side, knows it’s something else entirely. It’s divisive, dangerous, and it’s going to cost you. Thomas Mayo proves that fact, and that’s why we must say No.

(next comment: children in a circle but when it come back to the start it's different- it becomes distorted over time: There was no stolen land as nobody owned the land. We all lived and died and fought in the wars under one banner, fight tyranny where we see it. No colour, no nationalities, no difference of race just soldiers of men and women fighting for independence and freedom. Children now adults carry the scars of wars in whatever fashion they are named and many of great grandparents don't want to talk about it as it is heart-breaking to them - but they all fought for us to be here today - as before I stated: "in unison, we rise to uphold the legacies of those who laid down their lives, their valor echoing through the annals of time. We rally together, steadfastly refusing to let anyone trample upon the hallowed ground that holds the memories of our ancestors, both here in Australia and across the oceans in Britain, France, Europe, and America. We unite to combat the tyranny that threatens to dismantle our nation and erase their courageous deeds from history. Australia Day, to us, signifies pride-a collective pride that transcends generations. It is a day when we share the stories of our forebears with our children and grandchildren, ensuring that the flame of remembrance burns brightly within our lineage. We stand as a formidable barrier against those who would desecrate these sacred memories, shielding them from the hands of profanity. No matter what race or species we as the children of past and adults today must fight against those who wish to put out the flames of their sacrifices for us to be here today. As you see, no matter what race or species. We continue on journey's by land and sea to migrate to the southland for safety, escape from the tribal wars, the black plague, and slavery. History was not kind to humanity at that time as we have repeated history in 2020 - a plague from 1331 to 1750. If it wasn't for their sacrifice many of us from British, African (African Asians, African descendants of many tribes), French, American we wouldn't be here today but I ask you, 'why are there many nationalities coming to the southland? Truth telling continues: The fact is that Cook’s 1770 voyage followed more than a dozen previous encounters by Europeans in the north-west, west and south of the continent throughout the 17th century - all of them more than a hundred years before Cook’s visit. There may even have been earlier Portuguese visits in the 16th century, and some historians have suggested that the Chinese Grand Fleet, under Admiral Zheng He, may have arrived here in the 15th century. Visiting long before Cook, men such as Willem Janszoon, Luis Vaz de Torres, Dirk Hartog, Frederick de Houtman and Abel Tasman are certainly not household names, as are Cook and Endeavour. NOTE these dates: plague 1750 or so- "The First Fleet of 11 ships, each one no larger than a Manly ferry, left Portsmouth in 1787 with more than 1480 men, women and children onboard. Although most were British, there were also African, American and French immigrants. There was no invasion. Their first sight was the islands off the mainland CoCo islands, Christmas island, and Norfolk island before these islands became overcrowded that they came to the mainland and sought a place to move onto of which it is said, Botany Bay. There was no invasion but men, women, and children looking for a place to start a new life. Migration by land: Prehistory. History we weren't told and kept from us. ‘Out of Africa’ stated that the first humans to colonise Australia came from a 'recent migration' of Homo sapiens through South-east Asia. These people belonged to a single genetic lineage and were the descendants of a population that 'originated in Africa'. Out of Africa: It is generally held that Australian Aboriginal peoples originally came from Asia via insular Southeast Asia (now Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines.) ‘Multiregional’ proponents interpreted the variation found in the fossil record of early Indigenous Australians as evidence that Australia was 'colonised by two separate genetic lineages' of modern humans. One lineage was believed to have been the evolutionary descendants of Indonesian Homo erectus while the other lineage had evolved from Chinese Homo erectus. Modern Aboriginal people are the result of the assimilation of these two genetic lineages. African Australians refers to Australians who were born on the African continent and migrated to Australia, or who have or had an immediate ancestor who made such a migration. Large-scale immigration from Africa to Australia is 'only a recent phenomenon', with Europe and Asia traditionally being the largest sources of migration to Australia. Modern Aboriginal people have a connection of their rituals, body painting, and beliefs from India and such interbreeding brought about tribal wars. Much migration began after the waters subsided in the 1800s. Much exploration has been examined that many took up residences in the previous Homo sapiens residences, yes, there was a previous humanity long before any other species migrated here. Australia was colonised by two separate genetic lineages of modern humans. One lineage was believed to have been the evolutionary descendants of Indonesian Homo erectus while the other lineage had evolved from Chinese Homo erectus. Modern Aboriginal people are the result of the assimilation of these two genetic lineages. The term colonization is derived from the Latin words colere ("to cultivate, to till"), colonia ("a landed estate", "a farm") and colonus ("a tiller of the soil", "a farmer"), then by extension "to inhabit". COLONY Meaning: "ancient Roman settlement outside Italy," from Latin colonia "settled land, farm, landed estate," The Australian colonies federated on 1 January 1901 forming the Commonwealth of Australia and from this time all immigrants have been given an identity called Australians. “The Commonwealth of Australia” was registered as a “sovereign nation” (which is legally NOT the same as a sovereign country). The corporation known as the "Commonwealth of Australia" then existed from 1934 (monarchs George V (1910-36) Edward VIII (1936) George VI (1936-52) Elizabeth II (1952-2022) to 1973. Why no portraits of full blooded aboriginals like the ones I went to DDHS with in Derby WA? Or like the ones I was locked up with in Casuarina from places like Warburton and other remote places such as Turkey Creek? The Aboriginals of 60 thousand years ago looked like them, not like the people in this whitewashed set of portraits.
@coover65
@coover65 3 года назад
How do we know what Aboriginals looked like 60k years ago? Have there been facial reconstructions from a skull? Too many "wannabe blackfellas" putting up their hand and wanting a payment from the government. "Do you identify as Indigenous" should be replaced with "should DNA tests prove you are mostly indigenous......".

Because the concept of "full-blooded" is straight from the mouth of British colonial governors.

it's a step in the right direction. it's complicated tho. unfortunately Stan gets triggered and uses a lot of hate speech and generalisations such as "the white man did this and the white man did that" for example. and yet most of my family came here in chains and not of there own volition and havent gone about the place hurting people. i'm not saying that makes anything less devastating of the situation with our original brothers and sisters or any better. its just that with maturity i have come to learn that a very small minority of rich people have been steering the world for some time, and they seem to hate everyone... white australian families too. i would say it's not so much as racism rather narcism. marxism. the hidden hand. i mean they teach us all that we live upsidedown on a spinning ball flying thru space for a start. theres a giant pyramid on the roof of parliament house and whoever these guys are masons or skull and bones society .. whatever they just love that symbol. divorce rates are through the roof and that's having an enourmous negative impact on all our children. they used to send our fathers off to some far away battlefield to get rid of them. now they do it via the televison and all forms of media including music by psycological manipulation of our women, and a few other techniques too. dead heart alright. australia as we all know and love it is on it's last legs. i hope we can all make the great south land as great as the one it could have been. there's a song about it: best of both worlds. actually you've done heaps on songs about it. you're a great inspiration. you're not wrong. love you guys. never give up.

How about some truth in all this ..for gods sake we can't climb ayers rock anymore and no true aboriginal ever had a problem with it before. Seems to have taken on the white mans process of stamp a name on it and claim it, purport to represent black man and charge other whiet man for the task. Sounds hijacked and completely disrespectful to the full bloods. Loved listening to the Oils in the 80's and 90's and very concerned about a lot of transgressions but this is going way too far. I've lived in Tennant Creek and what I saw is real, and what I see from all the do-gooder city folk is legalised money generating rubbish.

I've spent time with 100% Islander and Aboriginal people. For many their problems are far greater than having what they call "some wannbe black fella" representing them. They see those less than 50% indigenous as "white fellas". If we truly want to represent First Nations, write the new constiution in an indigenous language.

@@coover65 I agree. I actually think white man has no future without the constitution being written in an indigenous language.

No amount of money and apologies will help to close the gap until the indigenous community want it.

@Simon Nielsen Give me a break. Been heard by the highest office in the land and every body else for decades now with constant documentaries, reports, movies, books, media, the list goes on. What do you mean 'about being heard?'. Absolute rubbish. The indigenous community is exceptionally well represented in this country. Its just that some are never satisfied, and some will use cards to their advantage. It just goes on and on.

Albo is deliberately misleading the Australian people, repeatedly citing this document is one A4 page when it is in fact 26 pages. Why? It is a gross representation of the people of this nation through the total lack of transparency on this issue. Aboriginal voices have a direct path to government. What have they done with 34 BILLION dollars assigned to them to address the issues at hand? This is not an emotive issue, let's lay everything on the table for everyone.
