Everyone likes Igon’s voice actor, but Midra’s voice actor freaking nailed it! When he says, "I have endured more than enough", I felt that in my heart.
It is scary how the vessel of the frenzy flame, who is the representative of chaos and antithesis to grace, can move and fight in such a graceful manner
actually ? no the one who impaled Midra which is inquisitioner Jori is a real hero for doing this he literally saved everyone by punishing both Midra and Nanaya for their foolish acts if he didn't then everyone would have been burned
@@todd2.08 then the stitching won't be exactly there the wounds from the seal are. I guess the surviving servants tried to stitch him together to help him "endure"
Ephesians 6:10-18 says, Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Man the Hornsent did not mess around with the Frenzied Flame. I dare say this makes the whole Golden Order's "Lock 'em in a tomb" option seem almost merciful. At least the Nomads didn't have their spines replaced by a spike sword while somehow still alive.
I mean if people are experimenting with an Eldritch Fire God of Damnation that will cause the heat-death of the universe, while throwing all caution to the wind, IN MY BACK YARD NO LESS? I’d also want to put a stop to that at all costs
Co-opting this chain to say when it comes to shades of extremes, the Hornsent and Golden Order are both terrible. The furnace golems were stuffed with people, just like the Hornsent's melting pots.
@@greasemonk4576 collective punishment on both sides didn't really go well. Hornset stuck shamans in Jars. They get their entire civilization genocided in kind because Marika said "screw those guys" and the cycle of suffering repeats.

Idk why, but his: “Enough… I have endured…more than enough…” got me a lil emotional the first time I heard it lol, the voice actor did a great job! I was like: “Same, brother. Same. 😞”
Good lord, Fromsoft games are full of all kinds of awful curses and punishments, but this had to be one of the worst ones. Midra's had that barbed sword impaled right through his entire body and he endured all of that for Elden Lord knows how long, either to keep the Frenzied Flame sealed away or so he could suffer long enough to empower it. Also the visual of his head suddenly being replaced by the Frenzied Flame - and throwing out huge waves of yellow heat as he poses - is super intimidating.
truly some Hellraiser shit. honestly the first thing i thought of when i saw it was the "harp" from the reboot movie a couple years ago- a machine they fused into a dude that just randomly pulls on his nerves all the time. obviously not that similar...at all conceptually lol, but just in terms of like, the level and persistence of pain being ridiculous. and the fact that presumably neither can be removed without terminating the victim (well. i would have to assume midra would've been if he didn't have the frenzied flame to make him run around like a chicken after he popped his top. although that's kind of ignoring the fact that realistically there's no way you could live with that to begin with- i'm heavily suspending my disbelief here for the sake of the comparison lmao)
To be slightly fair to the hornsent regarding the sword, I'm fairly confident it's stated somewhere that his surviving being impaled by it was NOT an intended outcome and that it was meant to be an execution instead. If they could have killed him, they probably would've, but most likely the frenzied flame kept him alive in some way, probably in the hopes he'd give in and allow it to possess the body in a way that can't be done with the deceased.
The thing that gets me is that he has no evidence of being gripped by the three fingers. This dude became the Lord of Frenzy on his own without any guidance, what a guy.

He's likely Hornsent, one of the ghosts in Midra's Manse says "I ask you, what sin has Lord Midra comitted?" and something along the lines of "we're kin, so why do you treat us with cruelty?"
Theory crafting here but some details in the model caught my eye. The Hornsent, in their efforts to contain the Frenzied Flame, might have done more to Midra beyond simply impaling him. For some unexplainable reason there is a long, hook-shaped gash on his back and what looks like crude stitch work. This could be easily explained as it is stated a part of his spine was removed. Why? Not sure. Another feature that obviously caught my attention was his lack of reproductive organs. (Obviously they wouldn't show those) But what if the Hornsent went as far as to castrate Midra? The wound there is a little suspicious. And going off the other theories about his maiden being pregnant, evident by the portrait, it would explain why she was murdered. The Inquisitors took everything into consideration and surgically turned him into a fleshy prison just to keep something worse at bay. I believe after everything, the impalement was the last part of the punishment and containment. Which is probably when he was told to endure.
Midra: You were the only one that was nearly as strong as me. Tarnished scorched by the Three Fingers and completely naked: Buddy, you think you look strong? You're wearing a robe. You're just a cheap f*** knockoff Midra: Oh, no, no, no. I'm the upgrade.
The long wounds on his back vaguely reminded me of the imprints. A mimicry of the Three Fingers? Or are there multiple Three Fingers as well and the ones who touched him left different looking marks? In any case who stitched it though? Its implied that his wife wanted him to be in agony to become a stronger vessel for the Flame so I'm not sure if she'd do that. No one else seems like they'd either be willing to do it or be able to get there in the first place. There's a lot of questions that this guy makes me ask.
@Deathsetenta Which implies that the source of the Flame is both capable of and willing to force its way onto others even if they do not participate in the seemingly necessary rituals for becoming its lord.
As twisted as the Blade of Damnation is for a weapon, it makes me think of the spear Cú Chulainn had in Irish mythology The Gáe Bulg which would open into 30 or so barbs when entering a wound.
I think that and the way his robes inexplicably become a flowing cape are a byproduct of the absurd nature of the Frenzied Flame. Not only is it a physically agonizing pain, but a mental one that blurs the lines of logic and crumbles the foundations of rationality, hence why he grows from a human into a more menacing/elegant shape. This could also explain why the Blade of Damnation coils up as though it is alive, animated by absurd logic, or why the manse is lit on fire with the phase transition, but doesn't burn after the fight.
really cool effect that the "explosion of frenzy" when he "screams" at you is made by manipulating perspective, you see the effect zooms back behind him I like little production details like that! :) Great video!
I feel like the contenders for the throne of frenzied flame all had something in common. None of them were willing to divulge themselves of their love... Vyke and midra are in some ways; a parallel to each other. Midra endured damnation for the sake of his maiden, nanaya. Vyke inherited the flame in order to save his maiden, but they both ended up losing them anyway. A tragic, but poetically made story. "Leave the flame be, tarnished."
I like this, and it works for the player character too because you're maidenless, so you personally had no attachments or qualms for accepting the Frenzied Flame. Or it can even be seen as the opposite, because doing the Frenzy Flame ending doesnt sacrifice Melina (though you do inevitably destroy the world lol)
it sucks how underdeveloped midra is. The whole madness forest had so much potential to be the first recorded souls like dungeon that put a true horror spin on the formula. The forest should have had more enemies, be harder to traverse, Midras manse should have been a balls to the wall Lovecraftian nightmare house
Cool idea but needs more actual examples possible in game. Any armchair guy can write sentences about what should have. But it's an actual game and is limited to what can be designed, works, etc, and added into game. Just like kaiserdetective, all he does is write sentences on RU-vid and thinks he is better than fromsoft.
I actually agree, it's still one of my favorite areas in the DLC, but it needed more. The forest had an amazing atmosphere, but needed more enemies and danger and the mansion while a nice mini legacy dungeon, it needed to be more fucked up and madness inducing. Midra is an amazing boss and probably my top 3 favorite boss of the DLC, but everything around it would have benefitted with something more to it.
I like it. And now I know where the few items are, I can get through the woods on a new character in like 5 minutes. Its not white-knuckle excitement but its no worse than riding around the lands between to grab the Dectus Medallions or whatever
the fuck is wrong with the artist at from software? its hard to even look at these things up close, these guys had to craft them by hand, dedication to the craft is strong
I still feel sad for what happened to him, I genuinlly feel hurt that the character had gone and suffered through this, just from the untouchable beholder.
It’s really neat how not only the blade gets longer, but Midra gets noticeably taller. It’s like the Flame warped them into a form suitable for combat.
Man, getting that close look at Midra really shows how grotesque he is. The fact that the sword was essentially shoved down his throat, as well as through his head had never occurred to me. The fact that one of the branches pierces through his ear. The pain he must have been in for these unendurable ages.
i cant even imagine the pain it caused midra when he got impaled because when we get our hands on the blade of damnation we have to stab it into someone then deploy the spikes after plunging it slightly deeper. Searing pain followed by agony.
I am a lord of frenzy through and through, I used madness for everything, I never gave up on my spears, even on that awful gay couple, but even still, there asre just some kickass bosses in the dlc. Top five alone, in no particular order: BAYLEEEEE, you know why Rellana, twin moons go hard Divine Beast, because bro is literally dmc cerberus Romina, coolest use of pink in an enemy design AND OF COURSE, MESSMER, the GOAT. Honest, fun, takes no fire damage thus invalidating my build, but at least the fight lasts longer that way. Midra is cool and all, but there are so many straight up better bosses. At least he's better than that boar riding albanauric asshat. And you know, Im the lord of frenzy flame, not that random bastard. He didnt burn down the erdtree, I-I did! I am a lord of frenzy, I-I am a lord of frenzy!
Midra's score in the soundtrack is so phenomenal. I love how it seems to capture the vibe of the frenzied flame. Ominous, chaotic, epic, dramatic, sad...
It would've been cool if Midra instead of throwing away his head used it impaled on the stake he has with it being used like perseus holding Medusa's head to induce madness on the tarnished with it's eyes and mouth throwing away frenzied flame flames and blinding light like Helios head on god of war
Damn you can see that he has several stitches around his body, which means that someone was around coming and going just to make sure the sword wouldn't kill him And that one was probably Nanaya
@@radojerkovic3059 I'm confused. because it makes sense for her to want him to endure to "ripen" the flame, but then why would he ask her to forgive him when he stops enduring and finally becomes the lord of frenzy? If that's what she wanted, then why would midra ask for forgiveness
i know there is the whole thing with "opponent redability", but i find it a little funny that he un-impales himself and then his body mass and the sword's mass increase greatly after the transition.
An interesting detail: all over his body there are stitches made with thick threads. They don't look like an attempt to heal the wounds from Midra being impaled on a thorn or the scars left by three fingers. I wonder what causes these scars....
Honestly, at this point the only reason why characters in Elden Ring are lacking "attributes" is to prevent the age rating from going up. Some may agree with this but others may want it to be shown so you got a more grim felling as you encounter people stripped of all cloths, dignity and hope. But on topic. Midra really needs a hug.
I think the Frenzied Flame is the outer god of pain. A cry of pain is a desperate plea for someone else to share in your pain. When the pain is shared, it becomes almost ecstatic, because you know someone who feels just as awful as you do. You ever notice how hard it is to tell the difference between a crowd screaming, and a crowd cheering?
And instead of inescapable frenzy grabbing the enemy and peering into their soul with the flame of frenzy, thus melting away their very souls, their very beings, we just like, open mouth kissed them. Wouldn't that be kind freaky?
Frenzied Flame and the three fingers is such an interesting concept, as well as Midras coming into contact with it but not the three fingers. I think perhaps as Metyr is once again a warning to us of delving too deeply into the unknowable, like with Bloodborne those who looks for answers within the infinite are bound to go mad themselves as they are finite. I think that is what happened to Midras and as we know madness of the Frenzied Flame is like a virus it contaminates all it touches.
