Back in the mid 90s, Power Rangers was in its third season and Marvel Comics decided to do a comic book version. But despite hiring top-tier talent, the book is clearly treated as a quickie licensed book based on what was probably considered a fad at the time.
I list a handful of the recurring elements you'd see on the show to see if the comic book version also uses them.

The weird thing is, a comic book provided them opportunities to do stuff that they couldn't do on the show's budget, and instead they did...this.

I guess this proves it is possible to make a complete comic book on your lunch break without setting down your burrito. Stuff like this is why licensed comic get a bad rap. It makes you appreciate licensed comics that had real effort put into them. Like... ROM!

the whole "why they don't just go after their families" or any other kind of "why we dont go actualy evil for once" is always been a weird thing in stories. i mean, it literally applies to a lot of super hero stories. one time in he original digimon series the main villain had gathered all kids in tokyo because he needed to find the 8th chosen kid for some reason, and the other kids were starting to become a nuisance to him so the villain right hand goes "we could held all those kids we have as hostages and kill them if the chosen kids don't surrender" and the main villain goes "no that's not my style" and that always cracked me up to the point is my most memorable part in the whole show, the whole idea of the villain just going "what? no! i have standards man" is fucking amazing

The Japanese TV footage was only used for the "superhero"/monster-fighting scenes. This is why it was cheaper to make this show. It was an interesting concept in TV marketing that became extremely popular.

I was 9 when power rangers dropped. I was nuts for it. I have very fond memories of it. My son is almost 4 and I saw power rangers on Netflix, so I figured I'd watch a bit with him. He instantly fell in love. It's his favorite thing now. I can't stand it. I didn't remember the reason I stopped watching it when I was a kid. I remember now. It's definitely a show that doesn't age with it's viewers.

As a lifelong fan of Power Rangers, I can agree that the guys behind this obviously didn't watch the show before making the comic. It's almost like some later seasons where the producers tried to cram two or more plotlines into the same episode and as a result didn't really do a great job on either. (BTW I had a reprint of this comic when I was younger, but the issue I had only contained half the story and I never managed to get the next issue. So, thanks for filling this hole from my childhood.)

I was the prime age for Power Rangers and loved it. Power Rangers along with TMNT is how I learned to spell and learned about colors. However, my fandom didn't last long outside of toys etc. I didn't watch much after the movie and Trini, Jason and Zach left.

I watched Power Rangers Operation Overdrive when I was a kid, and now that I'm a teen I'm rewatching _all_ of the PR shows from MMPR to beyond. I stopped watching it during the 2010s for some reason, but I'm glad I'm finally back.
@metalbrainmextrememetalent6810
I remember when Power Rangers blew up in 90s. I was around 8 or 9 yrs old, and I was anticipating the first episode on fox Saturday morning cartoons. I remember the episode, it was about some pig monster. It was a terrible show, and when I went to school on Monday, almost everyone were power ranger fans. I didn’t get it. The show came off as corny. I was into Batman and X-men. Which were great shows.
@Isaac-gh5ku

So do I, and I only watch a few episodes of MMPR, and the rest after MMPR are very rare. It wasn't until 2004 when I first watch Power Rangers Dino Thunder (but not the first episode) that I instantly got hooked into Power Rangers. This lasted until 2009, with the end of Power Rangers RPM.
@Quintesson05
@Quintesson05 2 года назад
Your first episode was one of the lower points. I got hooked in high school after watching the true first episode. When their (1st season) Dinozords combined, they resembled Autobot City Metroplex in his (seated) battle station mode. From there, their *Megazord* made a slight change into what looked a prehistoric-themed Voltron. (The saber-toothed tiger leg _really_ reminded me of Voltron.) That's when they had me hooked. Food Fight aired on the second Saturday, but I think episodes might've run during the weekdays in between (during which I would've been in school).

Batman hit it out of the park, but X-Men in 1993 had too many snafus coming out of the gate. They started 2 weeks late (in October), then skipped incomplete scenes in episode 2... Things didn't straighten out until the 3rd running of the first 2 episodes... excluding when they accidentally ran episode 9 (Juggernaut destroyed the X-Mansion) after episode 10 (when they started rebuilding). *Once* they straightened the kinks out, I loved the show.

In 1995, Marvel Comics produced the comic adaptations of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and two Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, the first with seven issues based on the second season and the second with five issues called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Ninja Rangers/VR Troopers which was a flip book with adventures based on the third season on one side and of VR Troopers on the other. A year later, The Power Rangers also appeared in the Masked Rider comic book from Marvel. It was released during the same time as Barbie, Ren & Stimpy, Disney Comic HITS!, and Conan the Savage comics was on the shelves.

@DEADEYESTUDIO 5 лет назад
ecisme10 that’s pretty dumb honestly. It’s make more sense to introduce who the power rangers are to comic readers that haven’t seen the show as well as create a great comic for the fans. It’d be like if the transformers games forced you to watch the show before you could understand what’s going on in the game. It’s a different medium of entertainment hence it should be marketed to new people as well

This is a good example of doing a licensed property and not caring and doing something like G.I. Joe, Micronauts, or ROM and coming up with something great and rising up above the origin of being a toy.

I absolutely agree. Isn't it strange that all of those were by Marvel? And like I say in the review, it has top talent on board. They just weren't the right people.
@RobotsPajamas
@RobotsPajamas 7 лет назад
I think a big difference is that in the successful ones the writers were brought on board very early and they were able to create the story based on either guidelines from the toy company or from scratch. Here they were given a already established property, and in the case of the artist, probably felt like punishment .

I love Power Rangers. I did not grow up with Mighty Morphin though. I grew up in the Disney era of Power Rangers with Dino Thunder, Ninja Storm, SPD, and Mystic Force. I loved them as a kid and in my early teens I tried to deny it and acted like I didn't like Power Rangers. Until I saw Jungle Fury on TV and I was hooked on that. It's still one of my favorite seasons to this day. But all the other kids in the neighborhood never really understand the appeal of Power Rangers and that's such a shame since it legit can be a fantastic show for both kids and adults. Here's a quick list of my favorites in no real order. In Space, SPD, RPM, Jungle Fury, Dino Thunder, Lost Galaxy, Time Force, and parts of Lightspeed Rescue are also really good but the villains were a real disappoint which kinda brings the show down for me. I haven't seen some seasons yet to this day though like the original Mighty Morphin run, Zeo, or Wild Force. So I can't speak to their quality. I also haven't seen much of the Neo Saban era or the new era we just entered recently with Beast Morphers I think it was called. Also on an unrelated note my cat came over and sneezed on me then walked away. Thanks cat. You're a real jerk-

edit: Haha oh wow, the villain was Starlink all along, like in real life. This is more realistic than you give it credit for. I never watched the show, but at one point you say that the bully characters had become less of bullies... by joining a junior police force. I'm sure this somehow made more sense in the context of the show and their specific portrayal and everything, but generally speaking that would be more a confirmation that they wanted to make careers out of being bullies, than that they had become better people who had no desire to have arbitrary power over others and see those around them treat them with fear and undue respect. As for your question at the end, yeah, I was in the same position, I was just a bit too old for it when it came out... I was getting into anime, particularly things like Evangelion that were shockingly mature for what I had thought of as "cartoons" up until that point, so Power Rangers was really not at all appealing to me. Again I was discovering anime for the first time as this magical medium that was animated yet mature and took itself absolutely seriously, often way more seriously than the vast majority of American live action fare, besides rare things like Homicide: Life on the Street (precursor to The Wire, same writer etc, for whatever reason I got really into it as an adolescent in the 90's, probably because it was so different from everything else at the time). So Power Rangers came out right when it was the last kind of thing I had any interest in... but I still thought it was neat, like Pokemon, that something Japanese had become such a big hit in America. Not that that actually made many Americans ever really take Anime seriously as an art form just as important as anything live action (see the series of tragic live action adaptations of anime on Netflix, all made because the idea that something animated cannot inherently ever be serious and adult... and when you think of the kind of person who still thinks that way, it isn't a surprise how awful all those adaptations are, beyond how awful they would naturally tend to be no matter what. I feel like if you got someone who truly understood Anime, the thing being adapted, Japanese culture, etc, and gave them total creative freedom, something like a good adaptation could be possible. But.... why? The whole point of Anime is that they can create exactly what they want, without regard for actors, sets, locations, time of day, compositing special effects, boom mics, etc etc etc. To take something made with that kind of creative freedom, and force it through all the constraints of live action, on top of everything else that will inevitably be misunderstood or adapted in not the best way... it's a recipe for something that is ineluctably vastly inferior to the original, all for the sake of Westerners who just cannot and will not ever wrap their minds around the notion that Anime is a fully legitimate art form that has no need to be translated into live-action in order to "be serious, and be taken seriously by adults". I've always felt like, if someone can't handle that concept, they aren't going to appreciate anything else about the work you're trying to adapt, so why even bother. Like the famously horribly Evangelion dub... if someone can't handle reading subtitles and listening to the original VA's speak Japanese, if that's just a bridge too far for them... they probably aren't going to appreciate what Evangelion is doing as a work of art. That's just a shot in the dark.

If you ever talk about the power rangers again, you should bring up how super sentai has a lot in common with Marvelman and Spider-Man. How super sentai was based on the Japanese version of a Spider-Man TV series in the 70s iirc.

Kamen Rider, originally created by Shotaro Ishinomori - who also created Super Sentai - is the better show from an adult perspective: try Kamen Rider Gaim from 2013 - it's freaking nuts: rival dance gangs use bizarre / goofy techno belts / fruit armor to fight each other (or pokemon-like gremlins) over who gets to use a dance stage in the public park but, WHY? HOW? It goes absolutely berserk from there. I'm not kidding - it's crazy af!

I was already at the end of my teenage years, but teaching/working with kids who were very much into the show, so I did watch it to get some kind of common ground. The show always talked down to kids, IMHO, and was irritating to watch for that reason. The comic isn't "less dumb" in its plot device. It did fall short on the reason everyone watches it, which is fighting giant monsters. I am amazed that the show continues, but it was only mainstream with kids I knew for a short season.

Bro, you're talking about this comic as if the show was actually good or something. Don't get me wrong. I'm an old dude and I had my "Power Rangers" when I was three to five years old. I used to eat up some Spectreman, Ultraman, Space Giants and various other suitmation and Kaiju shows but by six or seven years old, I was fully aware that most of this stuff was far less than great and/or artful storytelling. I was an adult when the Rangers hit American TV but I'm pretty sure that this wouldn't have been my style, even as a five year old. Too bright and not enough consequence for all the action. I'm astounded that it's lasted so long... ...but then, I feel the same way about the Ninja Turtles.

Sure, I hear what you're saying. You don't hold Friday the 13th to the same standard as Citizen Kane but you can still enjoy both for what they are. But when you have the guys who were making Infinity Guantlet and Age of Apocalypse on a show that's proven itself to be relevant to a certain age group, I think this is a disappointment. And you can compare it to the current book by Boom Studios to realize you can make an entertaining story out of the material.

the hype didn't last until it matured a lot in the 6th Space season and saved the show. Since then it goes from awsome to awful only having about 6 legit seasons. In this order Space, Lost Galaxy, Time Force, Dino Thunder, SPD, RPM. Everything else is objective at best and awful at worst. Newer seasons are just toy commercials for toddlers. The Movie and comic is all fans have now. RPM in 09 was mature and well acted. Just the best.

Whoa, whoa, no dissing the Turtles man, not cool. Just kidding, I'm a huge Turtles fan and the current IDW comics are great, as well as the 2012 Nick show. But I can very well understand it's not for everyone. As far as Power Rangers goes, I was totally into the first 3 seasons or so (until they had their 3rd set of robots I guess) and then just as quickly as it came, my interest for the show just went away. Now I can appreciate it more just for the sheer campiness and nostalgia, but that's all I can say about it. The new comics are pretty good though.
