A House Divided. Rita's mother has come to stay, and soon there's talk of this becoming a permanent arrangement. They agree - for the last time in quite a while. After one blazing row too many, can Angelo cook up an ingenious plan to put an end to all the bickering? This episode was first broadcast on Thursday, 19th December, 1991.
The inspiration for this one was a 1972 episode of Steptoe and Son called Divided We Stand - though actually Galton and Simpson themselves may have been inspired by a similar idea done on I Love Lucy back in the 60s. The concept of splitting an entire house in half and the problem of who gets what is a funny one, and I especially like the clever logistics of it here. By that I mean that it's believable that Angelo has cobbled together that barrier with all its crazy automatic bits, rather than just a barbed wire fence or a line drawn on the floor. It's a proper alien's solution that's been thought through to a point, but no further.
Other things I like include Ellie being the voice of reason (even though she takes a back seat for most of the episode), the new hairstyle skit at the beginning, and that old-fashioned music score that evokes the late silent and early talkie era of the film industry (and Laurel and Hardy specifically at one point). It's also easy to forget just how futuristic that CCTV rig would have looked back in 1991.
Libby Morris appeared in Mike and Angelo as Rita's mother sporadically throughout the first four series, but this marks her last appearance in the role. (The same goes for Jade Magri as Ellie, by the way.) She's excellent in this as she throws some real cheap shots at her daughter, refusing to back down when the opportunity presents itself. Libby also notched up a guest part in Spatz, but back in the 50s she had her very own radio show before moving into TV and film.
Stick around at the beginning and end for a lot more Children's ITV continuity and ads than usual. Glenn Kinsey is the presenter, there are promos for Grotbags and The Tomorrow People, two breaks, and an extra intro into a very unsettling episode of Children's Ward which dealt with themes of abuse. Oh, and what's going on with that Lucy Lou doll?!
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.

I was absolutely gutted that this turned out to be her last episode. :( It didn't help I had such a huge crush on her. ;)

so it actually had a whole year off our screens then, how bizzare wonder if that was to find a new Mike

+morgaineofevil My guess is that the year off had something to do with Thames ceasing to broadcast at the end of 1992, plus them ditching two other sitcoms (T-Bag and Spatz), leading to a shuffle in the scheduling. Or maybe they fancied a year off. ;-)

I will admit to one thing, when I first saw this episode when I was 8, I felt so sorry for poor Rita that I was almost in tears when she had her fall, but things did work out in the end as we see. But I'll also admit that I did like how Angelo divided the house and was very interestingly done, I'll bet the same may or may not be said for the set builders in this episode. :D But yes this was the episode of the 'Rita King' era that I remember most because of the concept and the fact that little sensitive me was close to tears. Now I'm like, yeah they play up the drama just to make it look well..Dramatic. Though that argument that Rita had with her Mum was very convincing as if they are actually words that people would say in this sort of argument. :) Oh and this episode also was remembered for the fact this had the girl (Ellie) in it and not Mike. :D Thanks ever so much for uploading this and the added nostalgia of those ads (the Hornby 1991 ad, the Super Mario Land 2 ad and the one for Busy, Busy Bumbles) were a delight to see again. :)

You're welcome - always glad to hear from someone who remembers the specific episode being broadcast! (I really must get round to uploading some random ads and stuff that I've come across sometime...)

+VideotapeFTW We wouldn't see Mike & Angelo again until the show returned in 1993

Yep - and when it returned, it was suddenly a Tetra production (rather than Thames).

So not cool, I loved those shows. I always seemed to be the outcast at school as everyone else seemed to watch the BBC.

+Gavin Martin Yep, it was all to do with Thames losing the broadcasting franchise. The children's department basically became its own independent production company.

+VideotapeFTW I noticed in series 4 of Mike & Angelo, Angelo has red hair was there an explanation for that? Is Matt Wright's last episode going to be uploaded as well.

The music after Angelo splits the house in 2 sounds like laurel and hardy

Yeah, I reckon that's deliberate. Can't be a coincidence.

Was it ever explained who Ellie was and why she was spending time with Angelo in the first place?

Good spot. Extra weird as "Next week" would have been Boxing Day anyway. Is there a chance this is a repeat? More research required...
