The Boomers. The gang get some new next-door neighbours: a nice fun-loving Australian couple with a penchant for barbecues and music. What could possibly go wrong? Katy for one is determined that the boys are understanding and give them every chance. To begin with. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 23rd January, 1997, and it's only fair to mention that in the unlikely event of the series ever being repeated, this episode certainly wouldn't be thanks to Tim Whitnall's (admittedly brilliant) impression of a certain Aussie artist.
Plenty of silliness here to get you laughing, including the practical jokes, the strained polite reactions of the regulars in front of their new friends, the crazy schemes, and the kangaroo. Oh, and don't miss the 'thumb' visual gag within the first minute. This is another one that had me scratching my head as to how they were going to hit the big reset button that gets pushed at the close of every sitcom episode, but Angelo cooks up an unlikely plan, and we're treated to an ending that's rather bizarre yet nevertheless doesn't feel too out of place. Brilliant stuff, and you can never accuse the show of being too predictable.
The guest stars playing the over-the-top dual stereotypes (Australians and neighbours from hell) in this one are Moya O'Shea and Brad Hall. Moya doesn't do a great deal of live-action acting these days, but instead has focused that side of her career on being a voice artist. More impressive than that, though, she's gone on to become a very successful screen and radio writer too. Brad, on the other hand... well, his IMDB doesn't list anything at all other than this episode of Mike and Angelo. Can anyone reading this shed any light at all on what became of Baz Boomer?
Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording.
