The fun thing about Ulysses is that you can shut him up, either by pointing out flaws in his logic or by shooting him in the face, and the game actually treats this as you winning.

Actually, there's bits in the game to hint that Preston was incredibly depressed, bordering on suicidal before meeting the Sole Survivor. It makes sense actually for Preston to shove all of that responsibility on to you as it's a common trauma response when you're under a lot of stress from your own responsibilities to try and put the burden on others. @evanbradley6169

Sure, we know that, but the problem is that Kellog is from the post-war era, so it's possible that that sort of thing might be lost on him. He's a wasteland merc, if the job says to take the kid and leave someone in stasis as a backup, he takes the kid and leaves the backup, he's not really concerned with niceties. one of the funniest things about fallout 3 is that your character is still a kid, characters even refer to them as young or kid including your super mutant friend; and when you're a kid scared and don't wanna die. Hey robot, ghoul or super mutant can you go in? And they go "lol what are you a coward?!" And the game calls you one for not throwing your life away. I tried to get into Fallout 1 multiple times in the past 10 years. I only finished it the first time about 3 years ago and I beat it about five times by now. The story is concise, and each obstacle has a multitude of solutions depending on your character build. The myriad of gory death animations which change depending on your weapon of choice are impressive for the small scale of the game. Anyone with enough patience for older game design will be able to see why Fallout 1 held a lot of potential for a great RPG franchise. It's not particularly insightful, but it is a believable representation of the post-apocalypse.

I always personally thought that Ulysses was more of just someone who kind of lost their mind when Hopeville went boom, and since you ‘allegedly’ carried what set off the nukes to there as a delivery, he’s trying to pin the blame on you for something that, not only are you responsible for in the most unintended, accidental, and asinine of ways, you completely forgot about because it was literally just another package you delivered on just another day. It’s like blaming the mailman for accidentally delivering a package that was made to kill someone IRL. He needs someone to blame and just can’t accept that sometimes shit just happens.

@@ScoutTrooperMan Nuclear bombs do not cause the kind of contamination present in Pripyat. Nuclear bombs use the fissile/radioactive material as an energy source to create an explosion. In Chernobyl, the nuclear material from the reactor was actually blown apart by an external explosion, basically turning it into dust and combining it with the other debris to become a massive cloud of fallout. And even still, less than 40 years later, the area *can* be lived in, it's just not necessary to do so as there is plenty of space around it that isn't contaminated. While it isn't all roses and happy thoughts, one could actually live in that area with some smart precautions. There is an actual hotel there, and tours get hosted often to explore the area. As for Nukes causing contamination, they most certainly do, but it would be nowhere *near* the level seen in Pripyat in most areas, even if they were bombed. Just note that Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only two cities to ever be hit with nuclear warheads, are both currently bustling urban metropolises, and were never left uninhabited. So, yeah, it would totally make sense for Fallout 3 to take place some 20-30 years after the apocalypse and be in the shape that it is present in the game.

They actually do have reasons for why it’s that way Summary for why Raiders destroying each other- see tribes in Africa simulating this or see ‘the lost boys’ the Mormons excommunicate because the boys don’t have anyone to date because everyone is already assigned to the leaders. Then we have the slavers which also collapsed in the last 30 or so years. Then super mutants rolled in, and the brotherhood a century later… take the raider analogy. Then we have poor food trade- summary is 3 or so settlements make food. Rivet city has issues with people eating dead fish that wash up. Point lookout does sell food, the Pitt just kinda collects stuff. Finally we talk about water. Most of the cities handle water well and make their own clean water. We’re basically making a clean River or lake for everyone. Of course this collapsed when the sheer scale of it was a issue. Think nuclear bombs fell in 2000’s, and then imagine how bad Venezuela would have had it now. As for the enclave, much better antagonists in 3 than 2. See the president: outside of head box dialogue he adds nothing and just is a poke at a guy who made goofs when he spoke in public. Given interplay basically just made fallout 2 it’s no wonder that’s all they reference. Black Isle is where they focus on writing.

Yep, the Gary Glitch, you can also do a reverse pick pocketing trick on the Chinese Soldiers to get their unbreakable Chinese Assault Rifles and Flamers, but you need the pass the speech check with the Quartermaster to get the Gauss Rifle from him, and you have to land a critical to knock the Chinese Soldiers down to be able to do the reverse pick pocket at all. You all have to knock them down twice, first you have to swipe their ammo and give them like a 10mm pistol and some ammo so they’ll unequip their Chinese assault rifle, and then you knock them down again and actually grab the rifle. Oh, and for the Chinese General, you can straight up shoot his sword out of his hand, no knocking down or pick pocketing needed. If you got all of the requisition equipment sets, did the above mentioned glitch, and did the Gary Glitch at the end of the DLC, you now have a set of Winterized Combat Armor, Assault Rifle, Chinese Assault Rifle, 10mm Pistol and SMG, Trench Knife, Power Fist, Sniper, Rocket Launcher, Combat Shotgun, Flamer, and Shock Sword, all of which are unbreakable like the Winterized T-51 you’re supposed to get. Not to mention the Minutemen ending had the Brotherhood 'alliance' cut where Maxson just straight up promotes you to Sentinel because reasons. I feel like they also missed the fact that the Minutemen are incredibly flawed, but the reason you don't encounter them outright is because the Minutemen's flaw is their lack of leadership. Nobody was willing to step upto the plate to take responsibility of managing a loose coalition of random militias that in the past literally came to blows with one another. Fallout 4 had a lot of content cut that consisted of world-building quests. Hell, the whole incident with Quincy can be followed back to the start where you can learn that the reason the Minutemen didn't seem to show up, was due to them essentially having a civil war and the Minutemen that weren't aligned with Garvey were all deserters that joined the Gunners. Nuka World further lines out the issues the Minutemen have with you being able to straight up be both the General and the Overboss, somewhat bringing us back to the initial issue with the Minutemen having split loyalties.

The only problem was that the mod had some really weird up drop rates and randomization, so you almost couldn't find a single weapon that wasn't converted to a completely different caliber than you'd expect. The minigun you find early on was chambered in a large rifle caliber, and the damage had been rebalanced, so while you still got a thousand rounds or more like in the unmodded game, the deathclaw only took a one-second burst before exploding, much like all other land animals when faced with a minigun. Now I don't remember where I heard this, whether in game or from an outside source , but from what I recall the reason why wastelanders settled in megaton was that at first the crater acted as good cover against stray bullets. So when a trader got shot at by a raider they would immediatly run and take cover in the crater and because there is a nuke in the middle of the carter raiders would naturally not get close in fear of accidentally causing it to explode by a stray bullet. Ofcourse now megaton has actual metal walls to defend itself so the bomb lost what little benifits it originally had.

The town of Megaton uses that water vein, they need to purify it, but that bomb is literally in the center of an underground reservoir. P.S. : This is more of a fun fact, the reason Fallout 1 and 2 haven't been ported to modern hardware or had an substantial remastering, is because Interplay lost the source code for both games. I'm really glad Zack and I share a similar idea of what an RPG is, though I aim to add the distinction of "Classic RPG" such as Fallout, Wasteland, Baldur's Gate, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, they each try to simulate the kind of adventure you'd have in D&D with a party of friends with interesting companions, interesting locales and what forth, and you typically mold your character to how you want it. Most people make themselves which is fine! But if you wanted to say make a dumb but very lucky NCR ranger who got to where he is with bluffing alone you can! Which is what I cherish about those games. But that's not to say like more modern RPGs where you play as a predefined character is bad, a lot of them are really swell, like the Witcher, Mass Effect and Cyberpunk. And while you can customize some aspects to them like details of their backstory ( Shepard ), how they look ( V ) or who they romance ( Geralt ) these characters are more or less have their characters defined to an extent, you just fill in gaps the developers left for you. Which is something I don't prefer. The characters are great and charming but they'll always feel like someone else's, whereas in Fallout my character is my own.
@loomers4232
@loomers4232 2 года назад
oh I should of finished the video before commenting: Yeah there's certainly lines blurred in this distinction, one of my all time favorite games (Deus Ex) has you play a set character but the way it's handled allows for extreme player expression, which is I suppose the distinction lies between the intent of "classical" and "modern" rpgs, if the developer intends for you to play as a certain character but you can express yourself in any way I consider it more or less in the classical definition of RPG, whereas a set character with limited character expressions more aligns into modern RPGs I feel there should be a distinction made between the two like JRPG and Western RPG, cause while they both have RPG in the name, they have WILDLY drastic styles of play.
@DJWeapon8

Agreed. Role Playing Games all lie on a spectrum made of several dozen criteria. The most basic of _my_ criteria is if: Lets you talk and have a say in the story. Lets you play to change the story Lets you enjoy and suffer the rewards and punishments of talking and playing. And how much it lets you do these 3 things. Most may be lesser RPGs than others, but they're still solid games.

It's my understanding that a lot of the reason why New Vegas had a weird number of NPCs with no voices is because Bethesda put an arbitrary limit on the number of voice lines Obsidian could put in the game, including DLC's. Fallout 1 wound up being my first Fallout. The short of it is that I found out about the series thanks to Game Trailers, as they had done a retrospective on the series as part of a promotion for Fallout 3. I got them, loved them, and I still play them both to this day. As for them being out dated, I think a more apt description is different. The OG games hailed from the era of digital RPGs directly descending from tabletop RPGs, and everything about Fallout 1 and 2 is tabletop down to the bone marrow. Because of that, I usually ask someone a question to determine if they would like the classics, and that question is: do you play dungeons and dragons? If the answer is yes, Fallout 1 and 2 will make you feel right at home. If the answer is no, then there is a learning curve and you might not like it. It's not outdated, it's niche and different.

Being scarce on everything and having very little in terms of protection made every encounter feel much higher in stakes and the need to weigh your option in an encounter, whether or not it would be Worth the risk felt like a return to form in the context of the games survival wasteland roots. Even the almost omnipresent fog cloud that can kill you: first time it was infuriating, but the second playthrough it added to the survival horror aspect of being a mere human that is no longer meant for you just like an irradiated Wasteland should.

And finally turning to the total conversion mods in the classic engine like Resurrection, Nevada, Sonora, Olympus 2207. I know I'm pretty late to this discussion, but I always hated how Paladin Danse's backstory makes absolutely no sense. First off, he tells you that he joined the Brotherhood after they made a recruiting run to Rivet City sometime before the events of Fallout 3, _as if there wasn't an entire splinter group in that game who became outcasts after the Brotherhood adopted a few orphans into their ranks after the scourge of the Pitt._ Even the good guys in the brotherhood refused to consider open recruitment until Maxson took over sometime between 3 and 4, so right off the bat, Danse's story doesn't add up. But that makes sense when he later turns out to be a synth, of course his memory has been altered right? Well if the railroad wiped his memory before he joined the brotherhood, then why would he remember being recruited? That still makes no sense. Obviously if he's a synth escaping from the Institute, then he can't have already been in the brotherhood before the railroad gave him his new identity. None of it makes any sense.
