Sneak peek from Mike Bozzi's "Mastering Workshop" series, in which he shows you how he mastered the song "New Magic Wand" by Tyler, The Creator
We're proud to present our second series with Grammy-winning mastering engineer Mike Bozzi! Hosted at Bernie Grundman Mastering, each of these videos document the mastering process for singles by the artists' Post Malone, Kim Gordon, and Tyler, the Creator. Bozzi gives an overview of his past, the equipment he uses, and his general approach to projects. He then tackles each record, commenting on the mixes and demonstrating how they can be sonically enhanced. Aside from sharing his mastering techniques, Mike elaborates on a variety of pertinent subjects that include mastering singles vs. albums, loudness trends, quality control, and determining the artist's vision.

So beautiful to see this, so many people (including me at a certain point) believed there was no point of a mastering engineer, and I foolishly thought a mastering engineer was just adding a limiter and some EQ. No, its a lot more that goes into it; Now when I look up credits for certain albums I don't just look up mixing, I always ask who the hell got this so damn LOUD, and also look to mastering as well.
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 3 года назад
Agreed mon ami. I was putting out demos in the 90's that weren't even mastered! I am starting to think that it wasn't just bad-luck I didn't get signed back then! 🤔 Best wishes from an Englishman in France.

I’m still getting the hang of mixing and honestly so far that’s what I’ve understood mastering to be(limiter and some EQ), but can you elaborate on how you view it now pls?
@nigelcarren
@nigelcarren 3 года назад
@@nightvisionsex Interesting debate this and a real divisive issue. I am starting to think that perhaps thanks mainly to todays technological advances (recording/mix-down is often a one-stop shop) certainly the process has evolved but in simplistic terms it is starting to look TO ME like more a second opinion and maximisation of all levels and more an 'average' mix. By 'average' mix I can only recount my 80's and 90's story when I was recording in a 24-track SSL studio the engineer would be monitoring us through the state of the art Tannoy monitors but after mix-down would test it on an old Matsui Boombox to be sure of his radio-mix levels. I don't remember any true mastering but that was probably not a good example. But, the engineer I am talking about remains the real-deal and is behind many successful bands though my recordings there were just demo's not for release so I guess there in lies the difference. Now here I sit in the 21st century where most of this studio can now happen in my MacBook, but I am keen to kill my bad-habits and absolutely nail it this time, because my old demo's sound pretty muddy by todays standards, but I am yet to find the definitive video/explanation that will take the mystery out of this. Best wishes 🎹
@Try-st
@Try-st 3 года назад
@@nightvisionsex Yeah no problem man; A mastering engineer is that last set of ears before what ever you've been working on goes out to the public. So if you've been listening to what you've been mixing for a few days or a few weeks, or (Like me sometimes) a few months! You're not going to hear things that could be making your track not live up to its full potential; and the more people involved in helping with your track the better. So a good mastering engineer is SUPER IMPORTANT! that's why all these industry artist pay the big bucks for them. But for you and me Mastering isn't that expensive, a good engineer would be anywhere from 50-100 bucks at most. The big boys are charging about 250+ a track. I would suggest "Raw Technique Studios" dudes really good and fast, and he has a sale going for 35 bucks a Master. Any more questions feel free to ask.

He’s adding a soft clipper and a saturator on the master, which most don’t do. It’s not much, but you can hear it. This way, the low end seems fuzzed out and the high end loses that glossy high end that most mix with the hi hats and vocals. In the song, there isn’t that much high end, so the saturator fuzzes out basically the whole song

i think you’re just not understanding what he’s trying to teach. mastering isn’t painting by numbers. it’s nuanced and based on the engineers taste, hence the reason most people don’t master their own tracks. him describing the blending of frequencies, maintaining a consistent energy through mastering, and even demonstrating the subtle change in saturation, volume, and EQ is more than educational. you should ask yourself why you’ve gotten almost nothing from the video instead of accusing it of lacking substance. - nevermind lol

So, you LIKE the noises that make up this......song?
@stpedro-ht9ng

@@oneammonday Of course. The bassline is visceral. Killer stuff. The drums are punchy and have impact but sound like they're ripped off an old vinyl record. The melodies of the synths mixing with the vocals sound great. Then there's the breakdown where you hear the jazz-fusion-esque electric piano which has a beautiful chord progressions, and the part where all the elements kick in and start getting progressively more distorted, I love that. That sudden change in dynamics right before the calm of the electric piano section.

@@stpedro-ht9ng Oohh, I see. I didn't listen past the beginning of the video. A few seconds of that chicky-chicky-chicky noise in the beginning made me almost break my finger trying to click the mouse as fast as possible. My mistake, carry on.
