I'm a Tennessee fan and, I think Texas A & M got a fantastic Gem in Coach Mike Elko. I'm not so sure about his recruiting experience but, I can say this: He has done a great job as an assistant almost 3 years ago before, he built Duke football program into a much better football program, he did it with alot less talent than anyone else. He connects with the players, he demands his players to work harder, he connects with college football fans very well. I think the Aggies are very fortunate to land this head coach, he will build a staff that will help his players to succeed, isn't that what it's all about? I wish him the very best with Texas A & M, just hope these Aggies fans realize and, appreciate him.

Most of the defensive players on the Texas A&M roster were recruited by Elko when he was here as the defensive coordinator. I don’t think his recruiting will be a problem on the defensive side. He will need help on offense I’m sure but he has 11 million dollars in his contract for assistants. I think he can fix that.

As an A&M Fan myself. I wasn’t too excited when Jimbo was hired. I saw him come and cherry pick the Top Texas recruits every year. When I saw Alabama steam roll through FSU I was a bit surprised considering all the talent he had. That was the 1st thing that came to mind when A&M hired him. Don’t get me wrong. I did kinda become a believer because of all the high ranking recruiting classes he was able to reel in. That feeling was new to all of us A&M fans. I think that’s why Jimbo was able to pretty much do what ever he wanted at A&M. Mike Elko on the other hand is a guy that I was hoping would be the next HC. I became a believer when I saw his defense dominate considering the limited amount of talent he had to work with.

The Texas High School coaches were pleased with the hire. Elko had a good reputation with them in his first time with A&M. He was also instrumental in the #1 class they signed a few years ago. Those players were thrilled he was back.

I know people outside of A&M don't understand this hire but the reality is that was THE MAN over half the Aggie fan base wanted from the start. So much so people seriously wanted to trade him for Fisher BEFORE he left for the Duke HC job.

Hey McElroy, you mentioned you are not sure if he's a great recruiter or not. He is the main reason for A&M securing the top recruiting class of all time. Jimbo played a major role too, but Elko and E-Rob did the bulk of the work in getting the 5 stars that are still there. The other 5 stars that were problem-children and now gone from the program and out of cfb entirely, Jimbo closed on those people.

One thing we know, is he would be a lot better recruiter than Mark Stoops. Elko is 10 years younger, and just more of a player’s coach and hires better OCs.

Elko will be able to recruit. He recruited very well at A&M BEFORE there was even NIL. NIL definitely does play a significant roll but people act like A&M didn’t have good recruiting before NIL. They did. Their facilities, fan base, Aggie network, etc make a difference too. Sure NIL plays a roll but it’s not everything. I think his success will depend on his OC hire. If it’s good the Aggies will be really good right away. Also keeping Conner Weigman is vital. Elko is a very good coach.

I think its a good hire. If people were expecting a&m to make a homerun hire, its just not gonna happen. You don't leave a school you have done so well in for another school that although has a plethora of resources, hasn't really accomplished a whole lot. Its a great hire in my humble opinion. He turned it around at duke with not a lot of talent at his disposal so I think he can do the same at a&m.

Elko was instrumental in recruiting almost every starter on the 2023 A&M defense. The only one he didn't have a hand in is freshman Taurean York. Every defensive lineman except Hicks and Kennedy, every defensive back except DeBerry, Thomas, Grimes, Rogers, and Brooks, every linebacker except for York and Sanford... all recruited by Elko.
