It's not that unheard of. There are people who work at your local walmart, grocery store, or mechanic's shop that come to work for years with the same people, but have never once been to a co-workers house. Co-Workers don't always, and in fact don't usually, become close friends.

Golic told Greenie that he isn't his friend and that they work together. So clearly that is what REALLY happened. That isn't even defending Golic, I just remember that day so clearly because I could see how hurt Greenie was. Now it is funny that you guys are saying this as it clearly came back to bite Golic, and Golic was CLEARLY the one who ended the friendship while you guys are blaming Greenie. I know this to be true and am not taking sides.
I think the fact that they were opposites really made it work. I used to watch the show for a few clips before school as a young lad. I wouldn't say I was a huge fan but I didn't hate them
I always viewed Golic as the heart of that show. I'd long ago moved away from espn for the most part, but still listened to M&M, and Golic was the primary reason for that. You never know for sure, but he seemed honest and genuine. And he's the dude I'd listen to if I had to choose between the two, ten times out of ten.
Same, grew up with Dan and Keith on SportsCenter but gave up ESPN a long time ago. Listened to M&M and agree Golic was the heart and soul. I loved Greeny too though ... It wasn't until he revealed his true character when I stopped paying him any attention. TBH I don't think I've heard a single sentence from him in the last 4 years. You know he's a big corporate d rider in Bristol, cause he doesn't warrant a show anymore. I don't know anyone who fw him nowadays.
stk I bet deep down Greeny despised Golic, cuz he thought Golic didn’t deserve to be on the air with him. Former NFL player, who didn’t take school as seriously, gets the same job as him when he worked his tail off to get thru Northwestern, and paid all his dues. Golic strikes ya as the ex jock, a super nice guy and genuine.
I felt like Golic expressed a disdain for arts and letters at times (I remember him deriding ppl who would stay at a hotel where Hemingway stayed and wrote a novel or something), but Greeny doesnt strike me as the most intellectual dude either. His inanities drive me more nuts than Golic's constant "I can see both sides". I'm not sure how easy Notre Dame goes on their student football players, but it's as good a school as Northwesterm. Greeny still says to guests, and cohosts, "That's actually the most reasonable thing I've heard on the issue." Which insults the person speaking (who "actually" is capable of reason) and everyone else who spoke. Such a little tool....
LJ Sneets I have met Golic during his playing days. Actually did an interview of him for the school radio station. It was during the football season and now knowing what I know, he was in some pain. He has some idiot HS kid asking him some stupid questions and he couldn’t have been nicer. Over the years listening to Golic and Greenberg he was what he was, a legit guys guy. Shame he got screwed. He deserved better. But, you know what happens to nice guys.......

ESPN is on the hard decline. All talent is jumping ship. They care more about robotic personalities than original content. Watch them hire Peter Nelson.
Why? He told Greenie on air that they weren't friends at the beginning of their run when they were on fire. It was very uncomfortable to listen to and it clearly hurt Greenie. I couldn't stand Greenie on the radio there for a while to, so I don't have any bias. I just clearly remember that happening and I guess most people aren't aware.
One of my favorite moments on Mike & Mike was a classic. I have looked and looked for this on RU-vid, but perhaps no one posted it. In the show that morning, Greeny stated a yard was longer than a meter. Golic corrected Greeny, but Greeny refused the correction. It was at this point you could see Golic's frustration and also the over confidence of Greeny. Greeny simply "knew" he was correct and the dumb jock could not be smarter in math ! They went back and forth for a bit, and Golic of course was proven to be correct. It was a classic moment in Mike & Mike history!

Mike Golic handled this the right way....and because of it....he still has a job in Broadcasting and will continue till he retires or dies....he is great

I watched Mike and Mike because of Golic. When they split up I always watched Golic and Wingo, never Get Up. Now that Mike Golic isn't doing mornings at ESPN I guess I'll be watching FOX.

MikeG is massively interesting and Greenie is massively boring. The dynamic was always that MikeG is a man’s man and Greenie is a golf-snob faux man - they passed it off as an “act” but in fact it was reality. Greenie is utterly unwatchable on Get Up - a huge mistake of a program on every conceivable level / $6m a year for being a putz...wow
As someone who worked in the broadcast media for 30 years what happened to Golic isn't uncommon. One can have a successful career and along comes some broadcast executive(s) who make changes just for the sake of changes. Those people are called consultants. And consultants are individuals who couldn't make a living in front of the microphone so they consult.
I am shocked & very saddened to hear Golic & Greenie no longer have a real relationship. I listened to them every day for years & years & they brought joy & laughter to each morning. That's a real long time to be with someone that you no longer speak to. A real shame.
Mike and Mike was the only ESPN radio or TV show I really listened to or followed. I would catch the show when home on leave (I worked in Saudi as an oilfield engineer) or through the replay on (AFN) American Forces Radio out of Bahrain. I never listened to any or the other ESPN broadcasts since most were low interest or inaccessible in the Kingdom. I'd like thanks Mike Golic for his good work on Mike and Mike. You never BS'd anything and you actually knew what you're talking about. Good luck in the future Mike Golic.
It was a shame. Mike and mike was the number 1 espn radio show and they nuked it. Just one of the bizarre decisions John skipper made in his last years in charge there.
People make decisions an have to live with those decisions. Im sure Greeny has no regrets but Golic is a straight up guy,and its hard to respect those that arent.
Golic is an absolute stand-up pro. He is wise, and let’s be honest, no one tuned into Mike & Mike for the other guy. I do miss hearing Golic in the mornings.
Really? Golic got a new partner and they were canceled by ESPN a year or so later. Greenberg's show is going strong and the anchor of the network's morning programming.
I listen for Mike & Mike in the morning for over 25 years I'm 45 and I mostly listen for Golic because he's the only one who knew everything there is about football Fins Up I'm also a dolphins fan
Yes if you remember the advertisement the ESPN used to do for their show.... What makes them different is what makes them great.... Yeah Golic is always come across as the guy you'd like to sit down and have a beer with.... I can see where Greeny could come across and aloof .... But as he said they were almost a generation apart....Greeny was not much older than Golic's children... Honestly the best part of the show was a segment they did with Chris Carter called.... The Famer....The former....And the fan.... Three completely different perspectives!

I loved Mike and Mike. I enjoyed both perspectives and their professional relationship was amazing. Greenie had so many issues with his new show that by the time they were able to start it things had really changed. I got rid of ESPN by then and ultimately cable entirely. They did Golic wrong for sure but I don't blame Greenie for trying something different. He should've kept Golic in the loop at some point at least. Golic and Wingo was great for me as a transition away from the morning commentary tbh.

If I was blessed enough to be in this business I'd rather do local. Stay in one city your whole career and they'll love you forever (unless you're Mike Francesca).
This is one of those things I would never take sides on. I don’t know either of these men personally, all I know is that I hated when their show ended. For over a decade of my life, I listen to them as I traveled the country in my work truck, or if I was actually home, I would watch them on TV. I know it sounds silly to say but when you have a morning routine and you listen to the same two guys talk about sports for 12 years every day of your life and then all of a sudden one day it’s just over year first Monday morning of the work week without them they’re just kind of felt fucked up to me. I hated it even more when I found out that there was real friction between the two because I didn’t find that out until years later after the show was over, but I always wanted them to get back together and do another morning show in to find out that it will probably never happen really sucks.
Greeny wanted to be the star of his Own show and let his bosses know. He just didn't man up and tell Golic. Instead he made it seem like theirs got cancelled. When in Reality, once the dust settled Greeny ended up with 3 shows and All of the money.
I honestly never knew what happened to Mike and Mike it was my favorite talk show but I've never watched alog of ESPN but mike and mike was diff idk just was a good show regardless of their personal relationships. I never cared if they were friends or not just simply a good show not even sure why just was. Simple just a good show
Every morning since I was 5 My dad would wake me up in the morning I’d get dressed go downstairs and eat my breakfast and sitting at that counter mike and mike would always be on tv and my dad would be in his recliner watching it and I would watch it until my bus came I couldn’t believe it when he told me they were splitting up
I love Mike Golic, Sr. A cool guy. I wish his son, Mike, Jr., the best but liked his Dad a lot more as a sports personality. I hope Mike, Sr., gets back on radio.
I feel for him in terms of how it went down, but now it is what it is. What’s your value as a radio/media personality? What’s your next move? You were so tethered to him that it seems like he can’t see how this can actually be a good path forward for him individually.
Mike and Mike worked because they both could say what they wanted to say. Now the anchors must follow the company line, and you can tell they don't necessarily believe what they are saying and advocating. I don't think if that show was launched today with the attitude over there as it is now, would be a success.
When Colin was at the “mother ship” (and before all the political correctness), his show was the best. Colin could simultaneously debate countless opponents and render them speechless in short order. His mind and mouth never stopped....it was entertaining and impressive to watch. Miss those days. It was a simpler time when sports was just sports.
My take on their split, which I've only gleaned from what's publicly available to fans, is that Greeny wanted to do a morning studio-type talkshow and leave the much earlier radio show that was simulcast on ESPN2. This would apparently allow him to have more time with his son who was getting older, etc. Greeny is/was perfectly valid in wanting to do this for himself and his family. I honestly don't think Golic begrudged him that a bit. Where the rift came was that Greeny went to the network and put it all in motion and didn't let Golic know anything until it was all but the last minute and set in stone. Some people have said "Greeny didn't have to tell him anything" and others have said "He owed it to Golic to tell him his plans." For me it's in the middle to some degree. As I said, Greeny had every right to take his career the direction he wanted. And he certainly didn't have to ask Golic's permission. But when you're one of the most successful sports radio duos of all time, most of us would think Greeny should have at least let him know at some point. For me, they built their brand on being buddies even if they really weren't - think of the home security system commercials at each other's houses - not their real houses I know but that's where they were set. Think of how much they used to say they knew each other's kids, especially Greeny who would regularly say things like "I've known Mikey (Mike Jr since he was little and now it's so great to see him commit to play at Notre Dame..." etc etc. To me this is why Greeny comes off as the bad guy here. If he had just come to Golic and let him know this was what he wanted and he was going to go after it and if he got it that it would obviously mean the end of their run, I do believe Golic would have respected it. Of course, that didn't happen and now we have this. I'm someone who's always been more partial as a fan to Golic and now Golic Jr than Greeny and I haven't watched Get Up at all. I watched Golic & Wingo for its run and now I'm basically rudderless in the morning lol. All good things come to an end, just sucks it went down this way and I'd really like to see Golic back in the morning doing something akin to this format. Probably too much to ask but man for like a decade there I watched every morning while I was getting ready for work.
When given the opportunity to be in the public eye ( radio / tv in this case ) Greenberg should have considered ALL facets of life before even joining ESPN We all make sacrifices….. No offense to him but boo hoo : the guys I work with spend weeks away from there families to provide Yet this little weasel is crying about the same shit and absolutely has WAY more access to his family than most I know I get it ….. but fuck Greeny
