Mike Mahoney on Woodturning and Craftsmanship

I recently visited my friend Mike Mahoney in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of California where he and his wife, Jenni have a farm. Mike is a woodturner, primarily a bowl turner - and one of the most prolific bowl turners in the industry. He is also a farmer, wine maker, tree hunter, and birder. When I started turning ten years ago, Mike was someone I idolized in the field and hoped that one day, I might get to meet. He is well respected all over the world not only for the quality of his work but also for his teaching and demonstrating abilities. This was an exciting day for me - to visit his home and studio and share a bit of his story with you.
Part of being a craftsperson, for me, is how it ties you to the rest of the world. Whether it’s woodturning, farming, wine making, cooking, or anything else - not only does it tie you to the physical world, but also all the other generations of craftspeople who have developed their trade and have shared what they learned - whose hard work and knowledge have laid the foundations that are here today. Mike is one of those people who I am honored to know and to call a friend. His work continues to have such a huge impact in the woodturning community, and yet he is one of the most genuine, warm hearted people I’ve ever met. Someone who, I think, epitomizes what it means to live as a craftsperson.

To me, a craftsman creates items that people can use, whereas an artist creates something to be admired, but not necessarily used. Love the videos. Keep up the great work!

It’s all about the moisture and species of the wood and sharpness of the tool. That combined with turning speed makes turning a pleasure! Some would argue there’s more to it but they are mistaken.

I feel very lucky to have attended demos of some great turners including Mike and yourself, I can’t say that I look up any one turner, because I am inspired by so many in their specific style. I turned one of Mike’s bowls many years ago for one of my daughters, she uses it all the time. 👍🇺🇸

Thank you Ashley for sharing Mike with us in a very well done video. It's always interesting to find out what makes another craftsperson, maker or artisan tick. There have been so many people in my life that have inspired and taught me starting with my father who was the proverbial jack of all trades and master of several. One of the most important lessons he drilled into me is that everyone can teach you something if you will only have the patience to observe and listen.

Thanks for this video Ashley. I have seen several of Mike's demonstrations at wood turners symposiums. He and Stuart Batty in a turnoff are a blast to watch. I had the duty of picking Mike up at the Phoenix Airport when he came for the AAW Annual Symposium the year it was held in Phoenix, so I had a few minutes of one on one conversation on the ride to the hotel. I found him to be very personable and very down to earth, just friendly kind of person. He is the kind of guy you would want for a next door neighbor.

What a great video. I’ve come to the “serious” turning late. I’ve had a cheap lathe for 10 years and just got a more capable Nova. Along with that has come the purchase of Bowl Gouges and a desire to learn to do. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and learned a lot. Having grown up in Northern California on a Walnut ranch and relocated to Kentucky, I was a little homesick watching your interview with Mike. It was very interesting.

Thanks Ashley, I love your vids and I was excited to see that you made this with Mike Mahoney! I’ve only had the chance to talk to mike on the phone, which I must say was a huge surprise at the time, I think I was a lil star struck when he answered the phone because I got tongue tied and he almost hung up, but he is such a nice guy and he seemed to go out of his way to make sure I was happy with the product I bought from him. Anyways keep up the great work, and I really look forward to your next vid! Oh and my 3 favorite woodturners and kind of mentors for me through vids is definitely Mike, Stuart, and of course you!! Thank you for these awesome vids!!

SO, it goes without saying I'm old enough to be inspired by Norm Abram of The New Yankee Workshop. But I have been looking up to the RU-vid Maker community for the last few years. It's Jimmy Diresta, April Wilkerson, Paul Jackman, Frank Howarth, Engels Coach Shop, Abom 79, and of course you that gives me the inspiration to get out my tools and make.

The other thing about craftsmen is, most ideas start with “I wonder?”. So our experiences keep growing. The skills making things is almost always for some one else. My daughter and wife asked me years ago why I don’t have a lathe. It’s been a growing love since then. Though I am not making money from my craft I love when asked if I could make this or that, to reply with yes.

Another great video Ashley. Great visit with Mike. He was great in your video. Could you explain something to me? I'm not sure I grasped the comment by Mike that he makes a living selling "rough" bowls to other Woodworkders.........or close to that statement. What does that mean? Does he start the bowls and someone else finishes them? If so, why? I'm a little confused. DD
