The feeling of “tipping the club head forward” on the downswing CHANGED my swing! Always thought you were supposed to let it fall back (not forward). Thank you, Mike!!!
One thing that definitely helped me with Mikes videos is listening out for the word "feel". Remembering that all these moves are "feels". Don't get to caught up on trying to see the move in your swing, if you are videoing yourself. You need to realize that this is all about "feel". If you "feel" it, it will be become "real". thanks mike you are the man!!!
I really like this lesson. It has really redirected how I swing the golf club back to when I started playing many years ago. Somewhere along the line I started playing squares and that led to back problems. So, finding this to get me back to an effortless, strong golf swing has really been helpful. I'm back to a 5 handicap and that aint to bad for a 74 year old vet who got shot in the legs when he was an infantryman. You are the best Mike.
I've been playing golf for almost 50 years. I'm a 2 handicap and have taken an occasional lesson from time to time. This video has done more to educate me about the golf swing and my flaws in particular, than anything I've read, watched or was shown. EXCELLENT!
I watched this video then went to the range today. Finally, finally, I’m hitting my irons dead straight through releasing the club. This video made all the difference.
Watched this over and over for two weeks. Daily range sessions and finally had the ah ah moment. It has changed my golf life forever. I'm two months short of 70 and only 5'7" and suddenly carrying my 6 iron 160. My buddies are going to hate me. Bring on the Nassau. Thanks a million Mike.
The pivot with the body is certainly what is taught and what I've use for years. When seeing this video, of course I went out to the range and with another attempts at a new swings. I was shocked how far the ball went and once I had the turning the steering wheel thought things started happening and as you said tipping the club head. Really appreciate all you said and also what to look out for with the hips.I see this was 8 years ago but thanks so much.
MIke this is unbelievable. The concept of feeling like your are pulling away from the ball just changed everything for me. I never understood what clearing the hips was and now I think I do. After doing the pulling away from the ball my feeling is that my lower body is literally moving out of the way for my hands to drop in front of me. This instantly fixed my impact position where my hands are clearly in front of the ball. I'm going to buy your book for sure!
This is the only thing that has made sense to me in years. I feel like swinging is no longer a horrible, robotic motion. It feels like a natural, athletic movement. This is wonderful.
I'll admit the first time I watch this downswing move I thought you were crazy. Then I started working on the hockey drill and started to believe that the hands have to come in and the club head out for the club face to meet the ball square. I have taken so many lessons where they wanted me to pull the handle at the ball. I have never felt comfortable with my swing and I didn't improve at all. I was hitting balls with your method this week and the contact and distance is something I have never felt before. Thanks so much for posting this information on you tube. I feel like I actually have the knowledge to improve.
I know right...I thought.....oh well, I will give it a try..... and I was blown away.... I blast my irons now like it's silly.... thanks be to God and Mike Malaska
Same here. I veered away from this but decided to try again but this time, I made sure my hands-in were more exaggerated. Closer to my body and it worked very well. My driver was straight...not very long but I'm sure I can work on that. My irons were pure. The only thing I'm not sure is, must I have a stronger left hand grip (I'm right handed)?
@@dany1247Mike has a video on Utube about the grip. He basically said you should have a strong three or four knuckle grip with your left hand ( bend slightly over, hanging your arms naturally. Your club would fit in your left hand as it naturally hangs) It prevents it from rolling over with your palm up. Check it out.
I just wanted to thank you Mike for this excellent instructional video!! At 63, I am returning to the game after a 15 year layoff and re-tooling my swing away from a rotate back - rotate through swing of the past. I have had lessons and my take away is modeled as you point out in this video. However, I have been struggling with consistency of strike. At times I absolutely stripe the ball but could not put my finger on exactly why my downswing fell apart more often than not. This video has me on the right track to building a more consistent downswing. Thank you, Thank you!!!
Virtually every word from Mike is fantastic instruction! When I do the things he says the improvement in my golf swing is incredible! Really, this and his other videos are the best golf swing instruction on the planet, (and probably other planets too)!
Such quality instruction. No wonder you got teacher of the year Mike. Thank you so much for posting these videos. More like this would be amazing. Just bought your book on my kindle too. Looking forward to reading it.
I would like to say that this video should be seen by all golfers around the world. It is the biggest game changer I have ever seen in my 40 years of playing golf. If I could have only known this 8 min instruction who knows what I would have done. Watch this video like your golf life depends on it--- because it does. I urge you all to stop what you're doing and put this into practice asap, and hit not another ball until you watch this video.
I've been playing for 50 years and have many lessons during those many years. But i've gotten worse instead of better. Your short videos, and this one 9 minute video, in particular has virtually changed my swing overnight.....no kidding...from the mid 90's to low 80's. I am 75 years young but feel like I am 50 years old again. I really appreciate your work Mike...I just wished your were closer to Austin, Texas.
One of the best lessons I’ve ever seen. For years I was dragging the handle through impact to create lag and always had to flip last minute and had a two way miss every time I was on the course. Did Mike’s “hands in club head out” feel on downswing and had the purest strikes I’ve felt in a long time!
I've watched this video at least 10-15x. I got a case of the shanks this past week and watched it again and hit the range. Alleviated quickly. When I'm out of sorts I always come back to this video.
Handle down heel out really works for me. For those who struggle to square the clubface by turning the body its a must try. Really kind on the lower back. Thanks Mike
I have been struggling for the past 4 months, hitting hundreds of balls, hours of RU-vid videos and only had frustration to show for it. this lesson (and some of mike’s other videos) finally changed my swing. Thank you, Mike!
Hi Mike a fan from the UK here this is the first instructional video I ever saw of yours. It was a revelation I must have watched it twenty times and each time I learn something new. It's taken me from the point of wanting to giving up the game to really enjoying it again and indeed improving again. Just a heart felt thank you.
Of all the golf instruction I have had or watched this was the best lesson ever. Everything now fits together and feels effortless and easily repeatable. Just awesome, thanks Mike.
When he talks about his career and all the incorrect but well meaning tuition along his journey it sounds too familiar with my own story. Amazing knowledge borne thru his own battles as a player. By far away the best coaching i've heard along with Craig Hanson another world class coach. Mike I'll be seeing you soon. Thanks for clearing the vision.
Mike I was put onto you by a friend, since watching your videos golf is so much simpler to understand and play, just want to thank you your lessons on golf are simply amazing I'm only watching your videos in the future #amazing well done Mike.
Mike, I have played for more years than I care to admit and I have struggled with the "pull the handle through" approach for far too long. After watching this video I did nothing but practice this swing for two weeks in my back yard (no ball). I then went to the range for an hour and was immediately making the proper club to ball contact using only enough strength behind the swing to get the club around (letting the club do all the work). I finally played my first round after learning this swing and dropped 6 strokes from my game. Without a doubt I know my game will be in the mid 80's, breaking 90 for the first time, the very next time out. Thank you for doing so much to help make this not only a great game but also enjoyable (now that I can actually make birdies) !!!
Thank You! You are the best instructor i have watch ever. I have not perfected it perfectly but I just started 2 days ago. Really is effortless once y;ou are taught how its done the right way!!!!
ive seen so many videos on the swing technique, but by far this is the best this guy is amazing gives you so much more information on how the swing starts and ends brilliant
Absolutely perfect lesson for my swing. Club behind me, consequently very in to out with it's problems. Impossible to find the bottom of my swing. One simple move changed my ability to get long irons (hybrids) up in the air again. However I still have issues often keeping weight back and early extend too often. I just can't get the feel feeling the body moving away from the ball after early extending for the last several years. The thing I like is that I'm not thinking of six different things over the ball and everything just seems to start together. I'm not sure if I've ever hit so many solid shots and I have never been higher than a 7 until two years ago. Almost 60 years of single digit play and I will be back there again soon. Just got "I feel your pain" on kindle. Thanks so much.
Well, this is really interesting. It’s odd, but I haven’t used my hands and wrists in the swing for a very long time. I’ve been trying to work on the drive/hold idea and I’m very inconsistent with contact and direction. Went out yesterday and let myself be loose and tension-free and allow the weight of the club guide the body. What a difference. I could actually feel the club again. I had a follow through. I felt like a combination of Tony Finau and Fred Couples. It was easy and fluid and felt like a golf swing instead of forcing the club to do things. What a relief! This could be a game changer. Now to get that tennis racquet/ steering wheel happening. Great lessons and so clear. You should mentor Sean Foley 😉
So happy!! Today i finally understood how to hit like a pro by watching this video🙌(2nd time practice after understanding this move) This video alone is the best Malaska video, Eureka moment. He explains how you do the takeaway, transition and downswing of the club from 4:38 is pure gold. And the hands down club head out concept is here as well.👏 If you understand that, you will hit bombs, starting 45° flying high balls, easy 165yds with 9i. And that sound of pure solid contact💯👊 Obs: I pretty much watched all Malaska videos including on Be Better golf channel and Eric Cogorno. I suggest you all to watch all the videos as well. Because it will open your head. So many different point of views and knowledge, information abt golf.👏
Mike, I have played golf for 40 years and tried to focus on improving over the last 10. My index is 17 and no amount of practice or swing modifications gave me the consistency to shoot lower scores. I broke 80 once but then it was back to 95 the next week. I've watch other instructors and followed their advice to see minimal improvement, but no lasting success. After seeing this video last week, the only thing left from my old swing is the grip. I am hitting every club at least 15 yards farther and more are finding the fairways and the greens. I can't believe the difference in the sound of my swing now that the club actually hits the ball first. I signed up yesterday for your online courses and you have already improved my putting and chip shots. I can't wait to watch the rest of the videos and watch my index go down. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with people like me struggling to find the key to better golf.
Thanks Mike! I saw your video about early release, and man are you correct I've felt it so many times but obviously the feel and the real just didn't match up, thanks for the fix will continue to support the channel and your philosophy with fellow golfers
I went to an upright swing a year ago after playing squares for years. I'm 71 with a poor back now and the upright swing works better, but it didn't really click for me until I saw this video. I keep it bookmarked. I go to it when the wheels come off. Thanks Mike. Toski would love it.
I finally get what Mike was describing. The most important thing for me is keeping the right hip back as long as possible or keeping it out of the way so my hands can come down in that empty space. The steering wheel analogy was a lil confusing at first but the idea is when u make a left turn with both hands on the steering wheel, the right hand come around over the top of the left hand. I think Mike was describing how the right hand come over the top of the left hand when u come down toward the ball. Thats what it feels like. All I can say is, keep going to the range and experiment with it. I promised u once u get it, U will thanks MIKE a million times. Once u have that swing down, the trick is to swing REAL easy and watch that ball flies straight in the air and land w/in 6 ft from the flag.
Thank you, Mike. I have tried and it really works. For the first time since 1996 I felt in my hands the control of the club and the power to be released at the right time automatically. You saved my life, Greetings from Italy. Mario
Great stuff. That "handle-dragging" visual is the feel I was working on. This downswing theory and explanation makes a helluva lot more sense! It should be easier to do, too. I look forward to practicing this motion. Gonna pick up a tennis racket, too, for "steering the wheel".
“Hands in (handle down) club heel out”. This was the missing information for my downswing no one pointed to me. Suddenly my shots are impressive. I was beginning to think there was something wrong with me that I couldn’t get this right. I owe you a big thank you Mike!!
You just changed my golf life with this lesson. At 3:50 you say exactly what I was thinking where this can't possibly be right about sums up what I learned. The tennis racket demonstration I to be honest I said didn't make sense but I said what the heck why not. I can't believe it was that easy and effortless. Thanks Mike
Golf season is coming soon up north here. Watching more golf videos. If you watch the effortless swing of Si-Woo Kim, I think he does the same thing what Mike teaches. His swing is so smooth, beautiful and just long! I can't wait to hit the range and work on Mike's instructions. Thanks Mike!
Golf is all about squaring the club face, this is exactly what I felt when I was scratch, no wrist action and no flip of the club. trying to make bacon strips again! Your body reacts to the swinging of the club head not the other way around. Pure gold here.
Tried this on the range today, fantastic. Now have an understanding of using momentum. Ball starts off a little left at present but when I manage to get the ball to go more to the right it goes with a slight draw. Will keep working on it . Thanks Mike.
oh my . . I feel like I was part of that instructional golf lesson . . i can see why you were made golf coach of the year . . I wish more instructors took a leaf out of your book Mike, thank you.
I often wait until my club head reaches the ball to release and that kills consistency and power. This theory makes the swing so easy and effortless. I've seen many videos regarding "drop the club" and never understood the concept! Thanks Mike!
Always come back and pick up some little hints, always get a little improvement, but eventual drift back to most of my old bad habits, until I come back and re educate myself with this guy 's instructions,he really is pretty good at this stuff as far as I'm concerned.I'm basically a average hacker who can play good golf at times, when I take on board what this guy teaches I tend to play better golf for a while, glad I come upon him.
You have found the real golf swing ,I use your swing mechanics and I am swinging better than ever.I watch all your videos to keep me sharp. Thanks for your expertise...............Pete Needham
Wow Mike!! So Glad I found your video on downswing. There are not many videos for Women swings that made sense. I just bought new irons and will add what I learned from you.
I wish I'd seen this two weeks ago , I wouldn't be nursing a 'tweaked' back right now. I just tried this off the mat on my porch and it really was effortless once I got the feel for it. Yet swing speed was up and hits were pure with a direct/straight roll back toward me from the net. Simple thought and visual to maintain, I just wish I'd known this years ago.
Outstanding video. Golf Swing simplified into an easy to understand athletic movement. Provided you get your set-up and grip correct you are well on the way to many good shots. Thank You & Cheers Peter
I recently watched your video on pivot points, I have come over the top for so long that I had lost my “feel” for the correct move on the forward swing . I took your teachings to the range this morning. I started with my PW with short swing then a full swing eventually I got that feeling back, plus my tempo came back , no more Thurman Munson shots . I switched to my 7 iron and got some success there, still needs work . So I decided what the heck and pulled out my 3 wood, at first I thought what was I thinking, but at the end I found it. I am not saying I am a good golfer by any stretch of the imagination, but I did have the ability to pass my PAT at one time . I would just like to get somewhere back there . Thanks and will keep watching.
Dude..... Mike is by far the best Golf Instructor on the Planet he should be Golf Instructor of the Year every year he literally in the first 10 to 15 seconds of this video had this woman swinging like a Pro!!!🤘💪🤘💪🤘
I’m pretty sure Monica was already a pretty good player and that she had taken multiple lessons from Mike prior to this video. Mike is good but there are other instructors Better in my opinion.
@@ablgolfmom6211 I've been watching Mike for a while and he is the only Instructor that I've seen that really seems to want to help and simplifies it. Some of these other instructors have like elitist mentalities and make it more complicated then it has to be in my opinion!
Phil Saraceni I agree Mike has passion for teaching. I just don’t understand his tipping idea. It makes everyone hit it left unless they aren’t successful in tipping it out. Golfletics explains the swing in a way I can understand and his students have imitate success as well.
