Tellingly, these two men talk about the actors' performances and approach to filming, and not a word about the actresses' contributions.

One of the greatest films of the '70's, some of the best performances of the decade. So far ahead of its time, a great film about male menopause, about sex roles, about the choices we make. Still find it hard to believe Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel failed to be Oscar nominated. One of Nichols' best ... which is, of course, saying a lot.

@@maxrav1831 Check out the NHS website under 'male menopause.' Or any other nationally accredited medical association. Genius.
@maxrav1831
@maxrav1831 3 года назад
@@particleboy3584 Yeah and also male breastfeeding. Do you know the difference between political speach and scientific reality?. A Menopause is a female coming to the end of her fertility. A male can still reproduce well into old age providing there is no underlying condition preventing him from producing sperm.. Now you can and they have very recently change the definition to mean just growing old but that is wrong whether it's on a government website or not IE its a political false definition of menopause which is a real dip in hormones that effects females past the age of fertility. God give me strength.

Nicholson and Garfunkel were hampered by the fact that Carnal Knowledge was not nominated for best picture.

Mike Nichols basically started the New Hollywood movement (Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf, The Graduate).

Hollywood had changed in the 1960's. The old studio system was in decline, and actors such as Hoffman, Hackman, Pacino, Duvall, Nicholson, Caan, etc., who were not the traditional, handsome, leading man types, and were labeled as 'anti-hero', came to the fore .

I wanted to quit watching the movie, fortunately I kept watching. The movie is truly worth it, even just for the sake of the actors. It is not hard to see why it made an impact back then as it is nearly 50 years old. Already in the 70s people were struggling with the roles they were meant to live by.

stef I didn’t get it, but I didn’t approve of Jonathan stealing Susan too...what do you mean by struggling roles?

I haven't seen a movie made since this that epitomises how some men treat women with awful disdain. Classic portrayal of narcissism by Nicholson. Oh and Ann Margret.... what can I say

In 1971 I was too busy pushing through life to go to any movies. I remember the hub bub about this movie. Art should have stayed with Simon.

I want real black class in film to make things open,togeyhrt and historical again. thanks Mr Nicholas for the time when movies and people has roles that could have a meaning. if Michael goes back to off the wall and the young folks the whole wrought of teenagers will get the recording reels and books with black lenses film cameras we don't had to breK on some people's trap everyday. you tube, bite me!
