You are a genious. No more. I am very grateful to you. I'm only sorry I didn't see you live and I had tickets for the Night of the Proms in Madrid in 2007, but my daughter gave birth the same day (03/30) and I gave my ticket to a brother-in-law.
I fully agree with You. I met his great music in 1981 (period of QE2) and I was totally amazed. You can't imagine how many times I heard Taurus 1. In my opinion, "Five Miles Out" from '82 is also absolutely amazing in that time - with its beautiful sounds. That year he became the "Number one" in the Bass Guitar Magazin voting as a bass player of the world. ( reply part 1of 2)
I went to the Platinum tour Concert in Sheffield the same year at the city hall. I was right at the back but when I look at the speakers on stage they were pointing right at me I had a Great Night.
@raverdeath100 Yes, i agree with You, the version on that compilation album is a really great one. Mike's figerpicking guitar riffs are amazing... It would be nice to have a video version of that performance...
My personal opinion is: Incantations. Never heard so GREAT music like this. This is the GREATEST for me. I think all the lyrics he selected are beautiful. I adore it.. Waiting for his works always... These are only my personal feelings.. all comments are appreciated, tib
Talking of Incantations, Charleston is actually a variation on the vibraphone tune from Incantations Part 4. Both Incantations and Platinum are among my favorite albums ever.
Indeed ... we see SUPER SIMON performing with MAJESTIC MIKE. What a Formidable Team !!! Interestingly, the equally BRILLIANT PHIL COLLINS played Drums on Mike's QE2 Album released in 1980.
Yes, it was a really fabulous instrument at that time. My favourite synth sound from the 80's is the complex Fairlight/Oberheim/PPG Wave stuff from Mike.. Cheers, tib
He is also among the ones who had used Fairlight CMI on keyboard area for first time. (Remember Five Miles Out and Crises from '83.) I like him for his 5 finger fingerpicking guitar style.. but as a producer, a great guitarist, a bassist and a keyboardist we should call him rather a "real musician" than a "virtuose". Taste, technique - it's always there. It's the 2nd part of 3.
Saw him live in 82 for the 1st time (Five Miles Out Tour) with Rick Fenn, Tim Renwick, Tim Cross, Pierre Moerlen, Morris Pert, Maggie Riley and the Fairlight CMI. Today I prefer this to the Discovery tour, cause there's been more live playin.
@GoldBug78 HI! I have a friend on this TV channel. And one party night (hahahaha) me friend at last say me YES to me request about these video from 1984 on my city, Some years, but at last I have the video. This history is a lot years ago
I’ve watched Platinum from 81 at Montreux Jazz Festival and it was based a harder rock edge. I heard a version from 1980 from Wembley stadium. That version had a lot or orchestra built into it. This version has more a bass line toward disc and then the Fender Strat has the country twang. I prefer the S.G with the single P90.
I am always curious to know exactly what synths were used by Mickey Simmonds in this concert. I know for sure that a Fairlight CMI was definitely used along with probably a Roland VP 330 and a Prophet 5, Yamaha DX7 and Oberheim OB Xa and maybe even a PPG Wave synth. However I still can't exactly workout the identity of the top synth on Simmonds's synth rack. It looks like a cross between an ARP Odyssey and another Oberheim perhaps? Come to think of it, it looks like 1 of the Crumar orchestral poly synths from the late 1970s.
@Craigevansagain Let's hope he'll play and we'll see this great stuff once again.. As i read, a new collaboration album is almost ready and it will be released in feb. 2013. It's called "Tubular Beats", and contains a brand new track (Never Too Far - featuring Tarja Turunen) and many more re-recorded and remixed tracks co-produced with his friend York. hxxp://tubular.net/forums/tubular-beats-remix-album-in-february-2013--?s=64b4e64c02722fd6d0717e92ec1993ed&act=ST;f=41;t=10913
