Great as a guitarist, but even better as a composer, in my view. He's the Tarrega of the north.

He is not underrated. He created many guitar hits and was top musician in GB for many years. But he is not mainstream musician so yeah. You can think Mike is underrated.

He is not underrated amongst musicians. He is secretly cited sometimes as their main influence but they are afraid to admit it because Oldfield is such a giant, so tend to be silent about it. It reminds me of a joke that classical musicians have: They are asked “who is your favourite composer” and they list a few, and then they are asked “But what about Bach”, and they reply “Oh I assumed you mean who is the best other than Bach, as we always have him as #1 just by assumption so never mention it”.

No existo "el mejor musico de la historia" ... but JS Bach is way above Wolfgang Amadeus in my opinion, along with Scarlatti, François Couperin, Pancrace Royer and others baroque composers. On the guitar, you've got John Mc Laughlin, Jimi Hendrix, Alexandre Lagoya, Steve Hackett, Roxane Elfasci (you should check out her Debussy), Steve Vaï, Frank Zappa, Sylvain Luc, Birelli Lagrène and so many other great players it would take hours to name them all. On the harpsichord, i would recommend to you Chiara Massini and Jean Rondeau ♥ PS: do i need to speak about Jaco Pastorius on the fretless bass, Toots Thielemans on the harp, Joe Zawinul on the keyboards, Wayne Shorter or Michael Brecker on the saxophone ?... and so on, and so on ...

Do we need 2-3 guitars? Nah. Get Mike.

Not the best on any instruments he plays (there is NO best player), but the number of instruments he plays very well is clearly astounding, that is true.
