That's what Adrenaline Mob, Flying Colors, Neal Morse and my upcoming band w Sheehan & Kotzen are for....PSMS is all about the shred & balls...variety is the spice of life and if you look at everything I've done the last 2 years, there's a little something for everyone! PS - lighten up! : )
Mikey p[lays with attiude of sheer..."I got this" and then plays with pleasure, fun and the joy of performing before us! Still the player with passion, emotion and connection that made who Dream Theater was.
MP goes from project to another project, band to band and drum setup is changing etc. He just goes with this guy's to " a little tour" and plays amazingly well. Fantastic job - and for the most he seem's to like all the songs and enjoy to play and. Despite the lack of arrangements of this tour it seem's also fun
Mr. Portnoy - You just keep on doing what you do because we really appreciate all your hard work and musical talent. I for one love the variety of projects you've been working on the past 2 years because I know no matter what they will have high quality music!!
This video is the single most importan reason i pursue drums as my biggest passion and dream ever! Mike, this inspired a 17 year old to find life and and value! It truly shows what having fun doing what you love looks like and needs to be and i still come back to watch this video STILL being inspired!
@@82mangini Who the hell cares who you think is a better drummer? THIS video features the fabulous drummer Mike Portnoy. Just enjoy his playing and stfu, or exit the video and go watch Jason Rullo.
While I may not be a fan of most of the stuff MP has put out since he left Dream Theater, I still watch any video I can. It's absolute pleasure to watch someone who genuinely enjoys playing music and creating it on his instrument. MP gets two huge thumbs up in my book regardless whether or not the music is of my liking. He's earned the ability to play what he wants with who he so chooses, which is an awesome opportunity. MP's a legend.
I don't care what song it is and from which band it is,as long as Portnoy's playing I'll love it! God bless you Portnoy! Thanks for another great drumcam vid!
joacorejuela, I know I'm 3 years late, but this was the period where Mike used to record with a Zoom recorder (forgot which one, maybe Q3HD), so it's definitely not a shit cam microphone, it does the job !
this being, by far, the most fun year you provided us. to be honest, the DT of late felt a bit stale (and I can't say it is so much better in the last one), so seeing MP in such diverse environments are just thrilling. He might have the top 5 albums of the year! He certainly has the top 5 tours of the year!!!
I'm just a guitarist, but I really appreciate MP as a drummer and a person from what I've seen in video. Funny thing is I just pulled this Planet X album this morning.
Mike P. And Mike M. are both extraordinary talents and bring a different flavor to their music. I don't view it as a competition nor take anything from Mangini, but there's a "personality" that emits from Portnoy's playing that I (personally) tend to gravitate towards. A certain "spark". There's a musicality to Portnoy's playing, while there's a technical "mathematicality" (if that's a word) to Mangini's. I enjoy watching both play, but again, tend to gravitate towards Portnoy's style.
Mike, I'm so glad to see this! Most of us got into this because it was fun. It's nice to see that with your level of success, history, and skill, you still keep it fun, and entertaining. I've listened to you since I was 15, way back in 91/92. I hope you move on to something prog, and over the top, but not DT. Something new.
Very good, and I would say also that He always make something new to songs. You must understand that this is quite raw audio, where drums is on the top. This is PSMS version. For those who only can do "copy-paste" it can be to much. This is a a 110% good version of this song.
This sounds like an insanely technical song to play on drums. challenge accepted. Plus, I love how Portnoy interacts with the crowd. Even though he's behind the kit, he's definitely the show man of the group.
Aside from being phenomenal drummer, another reason I respect Portnoy so well is because he stands up for himself. Case in point: this comment section.
HA !!! one of the best DT albums ever !! I can hardly wait to see what kind of rhythmic masterpiece they come up with Mangini as a contributing member of the writing process !! and YES ... saw the DToE tour .. it was one of the best Dream Theater shows (seen them 7 times now) ever !!
As a very long time MP fan- I enjoy everything he puts out and have all the YtseJam & MP4 bootlegs. I love how he evolves a beat and agree DT & MP are like hand in glove. I hope and believe DT & MP will be reunited in due time. The balls and power MP put into that band are a huge gap now.
I can't speak English, but I know how to google translator: D It's nice that you have this channel, because you are fun to listen to. Very complex and very interesting rhythm. You are great! I'm not a musician, but I love the drums. Greetings from Polish. :)
Portnoy, duuuude, Croatia is waiting for you! We want you here, come and hold a drum clinic, a concert, a small gig, the hell, stop by and slam a beer with us if anything :) There are a lot of drummers here in Croatia who are dying to see you or meet you! :D We're waitin' for ya' :))
Hey Mike that was just amazing! Can´t await to see you again with Neal´s "Momentum"-Tour in Germany :-) It would be great if you add some more of the older Spocks Beard classics to the European-Setlist too. By the way you actually have to do it...you remember the guy you spit on with a bottle of water many years ago in one of your drumclinics?...that´s me :-) Cheers, Marcel
I am watching on video again and I must say: "Zoltan must be jealous". Nice drumming with a comic grimase and comment. Keep it up Mike. :-D PS: drummer must be a big showman.
many drummers makes mistakes and that's normal and i hate people saying "oh he miss that part, that and that" it's seems annoying almost 90% of those people can't compare shit to him
ALL DRUMMERS DO! ALL MUSICIANS DO! These kids or whatever they are dissing him in this video are fkn idiots and probably cant play a measure of this song
Great video, I just wish the audio would be a little more balanced, because I can barely hear Tony MacAlpine playing, but I’m nitpicking there, great playing
Dream Theater really wont be the same without Portnoy :( he gave the music so much life, energy, and power. DT lacks that fire nowadays. The fire that only Mike Portnoy can provide..... ....not to mention the fact that Portnoy's style is far more enjoyable to listen to. Yes, Mangini is clearly the superior drummer when it comes to a purely technical sense. But Portnoy's style of drumming is just GODLY. He's not just a phenomenal drummer, he is a MUSICIAN. And a damn good one. Big inspiration \m/
Come on everyone we all know it does'nt sound like the original, and to be honest with you, even if i am a huge virgil donati fan ! i did'nt listen to both Planet X (the band/ sherinian cd) till this year, i checked the original after this video, and only donati would be able to play these rythms anyway, so don't bash portnoy ! give him some credits he played it his way, and it sounds good enough for me !
Wow. Portnoy sounds great in this vid! I think branching out with these great players is making him a better player. Forcing him to approach things that he had no part in writing. Cool.
Unbelievable dude. You need to get in touch with the guys are Sickdrummer and give them this video to pass around. A lot of great drummers are on their page
Nem me conhece. Simples assim
Please respect Virgil's parts..,When the unison part starts at 1:25,you do fills, classic hand foot combinations, while Virgil keeps time with his right hand on closed hi-hat and his left hand/hett play the unison patterns linearly...Playing whatever suits you ,wont do.Planet X have unique drum parts, change them and they are different songs.
