Very cool of Lars to actually do this and not his tech. Also, it’s great to see all of the love in the comments. The majority of us wouldn’t be drummers without him. Truly one of the best ambassadors for rock and metal.
@@drummerdan95 and they lose that respect once they utter that untrue sentence. Mike Portnoy? Mike was a blithering idiot that was regretting walking out on Dream Theater.
Love or hate him...I'd like to see drummers pull off master of puppets parts....let me know how that works out for ya....perfect parts..this songs hard to play let alone come up with them parts.!!!!!!
Totally. He is great. He writes and plays very memorable and important drum parts. People can say what they want about his technical skills...but Metallica sound good, don't they? He is the perfect drummer for their band. To drums, he is essentially what Johnny Ramone was to guitar. People forget that the song is the most important thing. Serve the song. It isn't about how many strokes or fancy techniques you can pull off during a fill or groove..it is about how you serve the song...and Lars does that perfectly.
It's so cool that Lars turned up by himself with no roadie and speaks in great detail about his kit. It shows he knows about drums and doesn't depend on someone else to speak about his drum equipment like Chad Smith did. Thanks, Modern Drummer for another great Tour Kit Rundown video.
My first kit was a nine piece Tama. Same cymbal setup as his during the late 80s/early 90s. Since then I've downsized to a three piece including an 18" bass drum and only cymbals being a ride and 17" hats. So yeah, I went a different direction. But how fast did I click on this? Milliseconds. Seeing Lars behind those two Tama kicks teleports me back about 30 years. He'll always be the guy who got me into drumming.
The Drum God - Not for the Virtuosity but for the Cultural Impact and memories. No drummer in the last 40 years has been more influential and inspired youngsters to pick up the drumsticks than him.
@@heartbeatsdrum King Nothing did it for me, that sight of him playing in the snow was so cool. But the Roam is great as well, especially when he does that one-hand snare fill leading up the chorus and holds the other arm up! That was rad.
Cant say enough how glad I am Modern Drummer started video rundowns, these were always my favorite parts of the magazines. I loved seeing and learning everybodys setups, what they played, why they played them. It was, still is, so fascinating to me
Its a rare interview!! I'm 48 & have been a fan since 14. You seldom or never ever see Lars talks about his kit. Thank you David for making this happen.
People who bash lars are jealous of his success. END OF. He hasn't been a douche since pre-St Anger days so well over 20 years. He's now really down to Earth, a nice dude and has been improving lately as well. People are mad that they can no longer bash him cause he keeps proving them wrong.
best drummer in the world for me. is he the best drummer in the world? no, but he made me want to play drums as a kid. i am a drummer because of you lars!
So good guys!! Its rare we get to see or hear Lars show or speak about his kits. This is fantastic. Thanks Modern Drummer and Thanks Lars!!! You Rule!!!
That’s so cool that he took the time to do the drum tour! Without Lars there would be no Metallica, that’s all I’m saying. And this tour is HUGE! What a production!
Saw them three times on tour. Flew down to Mexico City for one of those. I don't even listen to metal really anymore, but I'm always seeing Metallica. Being on the floor and having the bass from Lars' two kicks hit me in the chest during Blackend or One made me feel like a teenage kid and reminded me of why I got into drums in the first place.
Gotta love Lars. Dude is not only a living legend, but he’s a founding member of the most influential metal band of all time. And as many have said, I’m so glad it was him talking about his gear, I really expected it to be a tech.
For the first time in 35 years, I actually enjoyed listening to Lars talk for more than five minutes. Thanks to his dedicated drum tech, he now has his own Zildjian Brilliant finish.
Very cool and very instructive! Despite driving me crazy with his drumming for the past 10 years, Lars is the reason I started playing drums, and I will always be a fan.
F**k all the haters and the ones who don't get what Lars is about and talk s**t about him and Metallica. Lars and Metallica are innovators and living legends! You gotta love Lars and Metallica... \m/\m/
I love how Lars is still concerned and really wants the fans to have a full real experience when they come to see Metallica even after all these years🤘🤘🤘🤘
I love that the man himself showed up to introduce us to his kit. Love that yellow with the black hardware. Say what you want about Lars but that man is a legend and has influenced so many to become drummers.
@@kannank.used it on tour until before Load. Didn’t record the Black Album with that, they used a Ludwig kit in studio, but even the Black Album tour was done with the Tama Artstar. The he went with the Starclassics by the time of Load and this particular setup I recall first from S&M, so close to 25 years.
I was at this show! Was also in the pit this past August and close enough to hear him acoustically when he was at kit #3, which was cool. Loving the positivity in these comments. 🤘
It's so easy to hate on Lars because of his playing style, his toothpick and damn bathrobes and i do that a lot, but I love hearing the man speak passionately about his drums and not sending a drumtech to do these video's. He deserves a lot of credit, he seems like a great guy.
I think people forget or don’t understand he plays out of time on purpose cause it works to his unique style.also whenever people say lars is a terrible drummer and that it’s easy. Tell those people to try and play motorbreath on drums. Cause from what I’ve seen it’s not that easy
@@lewisgrant7622 I absolutely disagree. Playing out of time as a style is just stupid, i'm absolutely positive he's just slacking. He's not the world's best drummer that ever lived and that's fine. He seems like a nice guy, he plays in the biggest metalband in the world and he's living the life we'd all want.
great to hear lars talk about his drums, it’s not always that we get « drummer » lars interviews, he always talks about the band rather than his instrument. thanks modern drummer ❤️
Finally someone notices this, i swear this guy knows nothing about drums and is the fakest person ever and heres an example, in charlie benante's kit rundown when charlie was talking about his roland triggers and how he blends his ACOUSTIC DRUM with the TRIGGERED vinnie sound David said "oh you must really depend on these triggers" even after hearing that he blends the two sounds and he could play the set without them charlie still had to correct him. And during Danny Carey's kit rundown he kept on sucking up to danny for no reason and when danny was talking about the song "chocolate chip trip" David for some reason said, "is that another thing we have in common, we both liek chocolate chip cookies" he sounded like a teenager trying to find things they and their crush have in common.
@@noahthedrummer5150Danny Carey said the song was named that because they were eating so many chocolate chip cookies in the studio. They were literally talking about eating chocolate chip cookies.
I love that Lars is doing it himself, and I love the fact that the technical part of the rundown is like 10% of the video, while the rest is about the reality, the philosophy and the challenges of playing in these huge arenas. Keeping eye contact with the crowd, managing the monitoring, etc, a great interview.
Wow, pleasantly surprised to see Lars featured! I know he gets a lot of hate, but Lars is quite an important drummer in the evolution of metal drumming. Never forget that.
Long time Lars fan here. I believe this is possibly the first time he has spoken so extensively on video about his kit. Usually it's done in a quick, jokey, even flippant manner, as though he's embarrassed to talk about it. But this is pretty involved and in-depth. Nice one!
Love Lars! On a non related Metallica, Lars note. Hope you guys do a Tour Kit Rundown with Mike Portnoy since he's back with Dream Theater. I also love the stage Metallica has here, the way he's explaining the rotating kits and stuff, pretty cool.
They augment the live sound - they don't replace it. Also they can be used for gating purposes. Thirdly - this is a year ago - the tom microphones have now indeed moved inside the drums themselves.
@@DavidOakesMusicyeah, they were used just for gating the toms when Big Mick was at FoH. I'm not sure if they're using them to trigger sounds now, though it would help with consistency between the four drum kits.
Amazing - Lars stepping in and not hiding behind a tech. Some of the best drumming and unique approach to fills and creativity ever. I remember rewinding the frayed ends fill mid song dozens of times the first time I heard it and still give it a good few listens any time the song comes on.
The piece talking about the snare drum and its sound for each recent album, specifically for "Hardwired", I loved. The snare sound on that album was a lightning strike.
Because he's in Metallica. Because he plays for the song and doesn't shred around the kit like a show -off. Cause he hasn't even been 'douchebag' lars since like 2002 so they can't play that card anymore AND he's been really improving lately - so they can't knock him for that either. Yes - Mike mangini is a technical machine - but name one Mike Mangini drum part that's as iconic as the snare fill on Sad But True...
@@DavidOakesMusic People remember great bands and iconic songs. You can be the best drummer in the world but a good band and great songs makes you popular. I like lars but you can't deny the luck. Right place, right time, right music.
Definitely cool seeing one on him, love his drumming and the kits he’s playing are just as badass. Definitely looking forward to seeing them in Toronto next year, it’s gonna be great
I’ve been drumming since 1993. Lars, Bill Ward, Dave Lombardo and Mick Harris all got me to dive head first at the age of 16. 🤘🏻 Impressive having consistency between 4 drum kits. Thank you for this video!
This is the ultimate kit run down I was waiting for!! Going to see Metallica in Toronto and at Sonic temple festival in 2025. Great interview David and modern drummer ! 🤘
The "Jimmy" he mentions couple of times, is his drum tech Jimmy Clark, who played drums in a band called Demolition 23. They made one album (self titled) in 1994. Sort of a punk-rock stuff.
