he wanted a break from the whole dream theater thing, because when he left dream theater they had been going for so many years non-stop, and he wanted to do something different!
The thing that makes Mike so great is not just the speed with which he plays but the power and fluidity. It differentiates him from some of the speed demons out there that can play faster, but with not as much "attack" on the drum head. Oh and if you are even vaguely paying attention there are plenty of examples of double and triple strokes that he is doing throughout the entire video.
Yet another example of when the drums sound good and more importantly when someone knows how to play, mics aren’t an end all be all to a quality product.
No complaints here. This is crazy awesome. Mike kicked ass for ya' wow. Wish I was there in the room to hear it and feel it. Thanks for making and posting the video and thank you Mike for blowing my mind with your grooves, chops and shredding.
This was freaking awesome. I'm so taken by the way Mike plays drums so musically. I think He hears sounds and Ideas in his head for drum patterns? So very good!
Those drums sound great, especially those small LP specialty toms. Those sound better than many other brands I've heard, the drums as a whole sound really great.
Actually one of the better solo's i have ever heard him do. His creativity when writing music is unmatched by almost any drummer out there, but his solo's are usually pretty basic sounding.
yup, i've always thought mike's solos tend to be based on speed and robotic drumming instead of creativity and groove. he's still an awesome drummer, though.
@@johndoe-iq2wu Solo is not "technical performance". A solo is a performance from a single musician. The quality is then not limited to technical skill.
You gotta love when musicians are so good that they make it look easy, until you try it. LP makes some of the greatest accessories for drummers and the best ice bells....Awesome video, Thanks!
I think that the solo is very good, Mike has been a long time inspiration. The key factor here is the sound which is a matter of taste. Note that there are no mics around, which probably means we are listening to what the camera recorded, without much/any sound processing. If this clip had audio quality to match the video, I guess there would be much less dislikes. Anyhow, it's not the drummer's fault that audio is natural and unprocessed.
I feel that as Portnoy evolves as a player, so do his solos. With Dream Theater, he was more precise and more creative with his solos. Seeing that this was done around the time he was in Adrenaline Mob, it's understandable that this one was more straightforward. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it very much, and I love Adrenaline Mob. But with The Winery Dogs, Transatlantic, and all these "proggier" bands he's in now, his solos have been displaying that precision and creativity again.
Mike's long list of Awards include 29 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll Awards including Hall of Fame Inductee in 2004, MVP of the Year in 2010 & 2013, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (for the magazine's record of 13 times), Best Clinician (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year (8 times) for Dream Theater's Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Score, Avenged Sevenfold's Nightmare and The Winery Dogs debut. He also holds the distinction being the 2nd youngest drummer ever inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame (while at age 37) and is currently the youngest in the Hall of Fame.
I wonder if the others from DT (not including Mangini and LeBrie) just look at this like an ex-bird. And think "Oh, yeah". "Why, oh why did I ever leave her?" He's world class and always was and everything he touches these days, it seems, turns to gold. I've got to say he's by far my favourite musician on the planet and not just because he plays the music I love but his attitude and what he's been through in life resonates with me. Never stop Mike.
Music ain´t just bout technique and speed and all of this that lotta guys mention here... MUSIC AIN´T SPORT OR COMPETITION!!! He´s not "just a drummer"! He´s much more! HE´S MUSICIAN! He compose songs, he arrange them and he plays drums MUSICALLY!!!
If this video is available to view in 100yrs, it will be like Mozart being listened to in this age! Mike Portnoy is The Master of Percussion Virtuosity!!!
Mere words will ultimately fail to give due credit for the superior skills that Mike Portnoy has, and continues to display. A one of a kind drumming expert, at least!
Guido Cioni But in all seriousness, they probably did use mics. From the looks of the room he was in, the room probably had some amazing acoustics. Also, at some points of the video, you can see some black stands off of the side of the drums which probably held some mics above the set.
I remember when I had only been playing drums for a few years and would have thought this was ultimate drumming too haha. Mike is good , could even be considered great , but he doesn't drum outside of rock grooves (from videos I've seen) and for me that is why he is equal a high schooler . I'm not trying to take away from his rudiments or technique or how 'clean' he sounds but the grooves he uses them with is boring
This smells so much of Alex Gonzalez, it actually looks like they told him “hey Mike this is Latin so we’ll show you an example of a Latin sound and you try to create from there” there are many parts sounding similar. So good
close your eyes and you picture yourself trying to test out the feel of a pair of drumsticks at guitar center, but some fuck found the double pedal on one of the demo sets and won't leave until you recognize his "stellar" playing
+mtndewman1022 yeah, portnoy can't play shit. it sounds like the typical high school drummer playing his new double pedals that he got for christmas and just figured out the "R L R K K" fill.
Some of this really reminds me of the guys in Godsmack (back like 10 years ago anyway). Shows how much Portnoy was probably also an inspiration to them.
Mike Mangini is no doubt a better drummer in terms of speed, precision and technique but Portnoy's creativity at writing music is unmatched. Music is all about creativity and thats the reason why I chose Portnoy over any other drummers.
Freestyle is a different animal than composition. You can't argue he's a good drummer. No, he's not the best. But does a person need to be the best in order to have fun and be successful? Liked? He's making a living at doing what he loves. There it is.
Are those drum shells made of acrylic? That was an impressive solo, not to mention what an amazing array of cymbals in that kit. He must have every kind of crash, ride, splash and china cymbal that Sabian makes in his kit, or so it seems. The only kit I've seen more awesome that is Terry Bozzio's, and that kit is a frigging monster!
6672rock Yes they are. It's a material called "Acrylite"!!! It's a chemical-polymer that's manufactured and can be made in ANY shape, size or color You want!!! It's an EXTREMELY durable polymer, hence why drums are made out of it!!! Lol. It's the same thing John Bonham's early 70's kit was made out of too.
+menom7 That is an interesting plate of information (at least for me). Ignored it's name and, credits for playing such polymer. For a moment I thought about a 3D printed drumset. How would such a kit sounds like? Thanks for sharing that info!
menom7 Here, there and elsewhere that may be ignored. Personally, I think this set sounds and looks way cooler than that of Bonham's. My personnal favourites would be Bruford and Bozzio though. Cheers!
+Jose Miguel Iglesias Oh,I completely agree with You on THAT one!!! (that his set looks and sounds cooler than Bonham's)........OF COURSE,in actuality,is simply a matter of "personal-preference" in both HOW You want your drums to LOOK,and HOW You want your drums to SOUND!!! For I've seen sets that LOOK cool as HELL...........but when I sat down at them, and played em,they simply did not SOUND good at all!!! Also,I've HEARD AWESOME sounding drums TOO,but when You LOOKED at em and saw the "condition" of em,they were pretty sad to look at!!! Lol. Point BEING,is that it's NOT so much WHAT your drums LOOK LIKE,or HOW MANY or FEW You have, but ANY SET whether BIG or SMALL,made of WOOD or Acrylics, can SOUND GREAT if you simply take the time to "TUNE" them properly!!! And YES,Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio's sets, are AMAZING in both SOUND and APPEARANCE!!! Thanks for your post!!!
You are the Only Dude On EARTH who could Sit In For NEIL PEART with RUSH in CONCERT,,,,,and then Some!!!!!! My New Favorite Drummer!!!!!##!!!!!!#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You always need somewhere to go. Don’t start drums solos with the whole kit. Start with something small like the snare or hi hat and then branch out to other drums
I don't think I would've ever had that thought if it it weren't for this particular performance and you mentioning it first. But now that you do, dude that would be a match made in heaven. I'm rewatching this while adding Les and Ler in my head and it sounds so right.
