Of all Zappa's drummers, I think Bozzio had the most savage phrasing. I was just checking out some live Missing Persons gig and he was just an absolute animal.

Colaiuta is indeed a beast. He even did a thrash metal album, that being Megadeth's The System Has Failed

Bozzio’s work on The Brecker Brothers’ Heavy Metal BeBop is some fine work. An absolute fave. Wish he did more fusion records though.

Terry was my personal fave with Frank and well out of Frank as well. I loved his feel the most out of all Frank’s drummers.

Terry's performances with Frank were absolutely FEARLESS and PEERLESS in a multitude of ways. Who else had the exceptional musical talent AND the balls to sport only a pair of black speedos and deliver a drum & lead vocal performance as complex, edgy, and uncomfortable as PUNKY'S WHIPS? NOBODY, not even remotely.

Haha...so true. This comment is brilliant & I completely agree!

I agree. And that's not taking anything away from any other drummer who played with Frank.Terry was maniacal in that band! Plus, Terry has a great balance of top & bottom playing with the drum kit. I dig that.

Agreed. Of all of the hundreds of live shows, and drummers that I've ever seen (saw him with Frank four times and once with Jeff Beck), Terry was most relentless, entertaining, and impressive of the lot. The buzz going through the halls and upon leaving each of these show was generally about him. He left thousands of jaws dropping every time that I saw him play!

Loved Bozzio's playing with UK Just imagine if Jeff Porcaro agreed Zappa's invitation in playing with him!

Zappa could always pick out the best drummers. From Dunbar, Vinnie, Bozio, and Wackerman. But I also enjoy Portnoy with Niel Morse too. Another great band.

Speaking of the Dixie Dregs. I remember back in the 80's loaning my friend a tape of one of the Dregs albums. He was listening to it in his car and his girlfriend makes the remark, These guys are very good. We laughed our butts off.

'Learning from The Black Page'. Well if you played Ionisation by Varese in school, and listened to Stravinsky you could understand where Frank was coming from.

@@hammer44head I was a poor, working class kid and my drum teacher turned me onto Varese and my high school band director talked about Stravinsky. You may ask, how does a poor kid pay for drum lessons? He gets a job, any job.

2 of the best Gavin H is another great but he doesn't get the praise he deserves

Doesn't get praise?! Gavin Harrison?! "Harrison won the Modern Drummer readers' poll for "best progressive drummer of the year" consecutively from 2007-2010 and again in 2016 and 2019. He won "Best Prog Drummer" in DRUM USA magazine 2011. Prog voted him best drummer in 2011, 2012, 2018, 2019 and 2020. He is the featured cover story on Modern Drummer January 2009 and February 2015. Rolling Stone polls rate him as the third best drummer in the past 25 years. In 2014, Modern Drummer magazine placed Harrison in the "Top 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time". Bless his heart, nobody gives that boy any credit.
