I have two kids in high school and sometimes we have discussions about what ccollege their friends are going to. And what is mind-boggling is their parents sending them to out-of-state colleges to get degrees in fields that are offered locally ,.so parents are paying thirty ,forty thousand a year to send their kid out of state instead of sending them to the local state University that's six thousand a year. My husband's in the trades business and he's doing very well. it's these parents who are willing to pay these absurd amounts of money to send their kids to college that have allowed this high costs to continue. Good for Mike rowe helping students find work in highly skilled trad s which can't be automated.

Go to a community college--- alot of times you can pick up skills not often found at a liberal arts institution.

They may find it hard to believe, but, women's desire for what they want in a man plays a significant part in what men choose to do when it comes to their profession. When you're trying to be the ideal man that's something one considers.

I was speaking with this couple from NY recently. After I said to them that my youngest son was attending a free computer class offered by the local adoult school after graduating from high school. The husband admitted one of theirs kids wasn't college material, but he attended anyway due to peer pressure. All his friends were going to college therefore that was the thing to do. He got an art degree no job and thousands of dollars in debt. 😯

5million dollars for 1000students. So that means it's 5000dollars a student. Sounds very efficient.

Sweden have a bunch of levels of different trade schools. We have both bachelors, masters and certain vocational schools that are equal to college, but is just 1 to 2,5 years. At my job, we have engineers with masters degrees, some with bachelors (like myself), and some with vocational schools educations and we are all working in the exact same field and have the same responsibilities. Sure, us with bachelors and masters will have an "easier" time if we want to advance in our careers to become managers etc, since we study more economics and leadership than those who go to vocational school. But i mean, us that got bachelors and masters.... like half our degree is stuff that has nothing to do with the engineering field we chose to study, so a guy with a vocational degree in a certain field has probably studied just as much in that specific field, compared to the guy who got a bachelors in the same field.

The host is acting as if she agrees but the truth is she would not date a Plummer and that is part of the reason, as well, that men don't want to do those types of jobs.

If they won’t date a plumber because of the fact that he is a plumber and they won’t be a plumber because they won’t get women, we can easily conclude the type of person they are.

Nice try! I agree that education must change, and that student debt is a painful burden for people just starting out in the job market. The truth is that education, as we know it, is becoming obsolete. It's demise is inevitable. Our current education system is a carryover from the Industrial Age. This is the Digital Age. Digital technology will change the face of education forever. Encouraging young people to learn skilled trades is ludicrous. The clock is ticking on their relevance as I type this. Construction, for example, will be totally disrupted by 3D printing. Skilled labor will be replaced by faster and more efficient bots soon. Don't take my word for it. Read, "Bold: How to To Big, Create Wealth and Impact the World" by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler.

I think we are a long ways from that. We still need plumbers, framers, electricians, mechanics, oil and gas workers, farmers, surveyors, etc. All of which you do not need a four year degree. We are still a long ways from bots grading construction sites, welding pipe lines, blasting stone quarries, commercial fishing, or frying donuts. We may be on our way but not quite there yet.

If you honestly think we will be 3d printing houses you are an idiot and know nothing about construction. You need human intuition to identify and remedy a problem. Welders, mechanics, hvac techs, carpenters, etc. will be here and in demand well beyond our lifetimes. By my guess skilled tradesmen will be some of the highest paid people in the country. Simply due to the lack of people entering those fields. It has been caused by people with your mentality. Let me ask you this when was the last time you took your kids out and let them learn how to swing a hammer? Such a basic skill that is being lost in coming generations because people like you feel that yourself and your offspring are above it. The opportunity to tinker and get exposure to these things never existed at a young age for so many kids, replaced with sports and a TV/computer for a babysitter. My folks always had stuff going on rental renovations, cars to fix, tools to mess with, at the age of 10 or 11 I had my own wood lathe and a wood shop in the garage I was doing wood working projects to make some money in elementary school. Your tune will change when you need a contractor to do a job and you are put on a month long waiting list and the labor rate is $200+/hr. Automation is still in it's infancy, it will become more prevalent but it will just displace low skill level workers and AI will replace countless white collar jobs.
