Nice! Don’t join the Infantry. Infantry isn’t a workable skill. Worthless waste of time and life. Everybody wants to hire military experience but nobody wants to pay for it! We ask the most of Mr Infantry. Don’t volunteer for the “crappy task”. Mike has no idea what he is talking about when it comes to the volunteers of crappy jobs. Secret it doesn’t pay.
It's hard to be of a good work ethic and be surrounded by others who are not. They harass people who work hard because you are getting the work done faster and better. You become a focus of conflict for them and they go out of their way to make things difficult so you will quit or get fired by them manipulating something. It's horrible the amount of pressure the do nothings at work put on good hard workers to discourage them. I've never seen such disgrace in all my life. This was what happened to my son at a local factory work. BUT he is on the top of the list for hire since they have shortages. Toxic workers :(
I COMPLETELY AGREE!! It’s crazy out there!! I have had jobs where you get in trouble for coming in early and staying late! It floors me how many people are happy coming into work and doing nothing all day!! I had a job were there was 2 hours of work for a whole month!! It was the same for everyone else at work!! They were content not accomplishing anything all day!! And I agree the cruelty at work is awful if you keep your head down and work!! Sad world we live in!! But hay all these socialist out there it makes since why they don’t discourage you from working!!
That’s an old problem. I experienced in the ‘80s when I had my first retail job. Earlier work painting houses, working the line in a kitchen and such didn’t have that as there was a clear measurement that outed those that couldn’t cut it. But we live in a bureaucratic world now and Parkinson’s Law prevails (work expands to fill the time)
When I worked in a unionized factory, in the late 70's, this attitude was predominant. If I worked faster to get through a task, I was berated by other union members and even the shop foreman to "slow down, you are making the rest of us look bad". This is just this generation's attempt to justify 'goofing off' because they are not being held accountable for their less than mediocre performance. This is what you get for "participation Trophy" mentality.
I watched 2 of my siblings go to college ahead of me. I wanted nothing to do with it. I went to my technical college and took a 1 year course in electrical basics. I've been a self employed electrical contractor for 28 years now and have out performed my siblings earnings since about year 3 in business. We're now THE preferred commercial electrical contractors in our area. Go to work in the trades and you'll be just fine with 0 debt and a GREAT CAREER for life.
And a boring day every day of your life. I speak from experience. This is the reason why many men live a life of quiet despair. Your example is far from typical. Your educational background has little to do with you having a successful company. It certainly is NOT just about hard work. That’s a myth for most folks. There are many people who do not have the personality traits suited to running a business. Some don’t want to be self employed. Lastly, success is far more broad a concept than material or financial gain. What about happiness? Most would benefit from doing something they feel inspired by and genuinely motivated. Are we saying that in this modern era of opportunity we should settle for an existence rather than feeling alive? The “get a trade and work hard” ethos isn’t a one size fits all concept.
If you own the business yea big money to be made in the trades but if ur a employee toy getting screwed car dealers charge 150$ a hour pay mechanic 18-22 broke as a joke paying for that 300000$ worth of tools

99% of survival needs to rest in your own hands. When the government is always ready to throw a check at stupid and lazy you end up with a younger generation like we have now.

I never went to college, but had a family early, and have worked at my last two jobs for 37 years. I started working at my current place of business 23 years ago. I started at the entry position and worked my way to upper management. All while using Mike's common sense mindset of having strong work ethics and loving every position I had while working there. Heck, I love Mondays! I'm retiring early next year, and making more income than I had ever dreamed. I'm actually reconsiding retiring and just stay at it, knowing that I could whenever I want. I couldn't agree more with Mike!
I would stay at it. If you can get subsidized health insurance through your job, I would definitely keep working as long as I could. You can collect Social Security, get income from your job too, and contribute to a Roth or some other account. In your spare time you have a lot of extra income to enjoy.
Sounds like your of the older lucky generation that was given the chance to work your way up back when companies cared somewhat about their employees. Today working an entry level retail job it’s just about impossible to advance. Trust me I’ve tried at 3 different jobs.
It’s not always about not working hard. The employers treat employees horrible. Mandatory OT, horrible hours and low wages. This is why people don’t care. I’m conservative on most things but not on this topic. Sure there will always be turds but Ive seen many amazing workers have their spirit just trampled by managers. Hard work isn’t rewarded it’s normally punished . The entire labor issue could be fixed so easily. The problem is so many employers get more joy out of controlling people then they do having a thriving happy hive of employees. Higher wages, good benefits, flexibility in scheduling and FIXED schedules! People will be begging to work for you.
100%! I'm a millennial with a bachelor's degree. Despite working hard, I've been laid off twice in my relatively short career. Most of my friends have similar stories. So its no wonder Gen Z has this kind of attitude. They see the people who've been in the workforce a little longer than them treated like sh*t and realize theres no point in going "above and beyond".
This is soooooo true especially in the retail industry where I work. And I work at one of the better retail stores and still it’s a problem. I’m great full I have a job but why would I go above and beyond for a company that pays me a wage I can’t live on and doesn’t care about me. I’m just a tool to make cooperate rich. Treat me properly and pay me a living wage and I’ll work harder any the company will do better. Basic economics.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen going the extra mile not work out over the years…and I’m mostly talking about other people that I’ve witnessed this happen to. I’m 33. It seems that there is a serious lack of reward for hard work in modern corporate structure. You’d be lucky if upper management even takes any notice of what you’re doing, let alone care enough to reward you. I see it time and time again.
mostly because they let it happen they think their work ethic is all that matters you gotta lay it out for them "I have done x,y, and z and I believe I deserve this as compensation" then leave if they don't give it to you most people don't have enough backbone to mean it.
My 27 year old son has lost the ambition to "go the extra mile" after he spent a year working his a$$ off, (in the restaurant biz), shelling out $1,600 a month for a STUDIO apartment, (just a basic apartment, not fancy), in the Seattle area, near his job. When his lease was up he was OUT of there and the experience changed him. He just doesn't see where all the hard work gets him if it all goes to rent and utilities. The cost of rental housing and the bleak future of never owning a house gets my son's generation down. It's an issue no one ever wants to talk about. And I LOVE Mike Rowe! He speaks words of reason and common sense.

Your son is lazy period!!! He probably learned it from you, the parents, no one told your son to pay $1600 for a studio in a woke city like Seattle, I lived in Bellevue paying $1850 for a 2b2b. I was laid off in Aug 2022, so what did I do? Work part time and went to college full time. How? I found a college Roomate to split the housing costs. And work part time enough to pay the bills while going to school full time. If I can do this in my mid 40’s why can’t your son figure out how to mange his finances properly? I’m just like your son, but my work ethic much better than how you taught your children. My son is making straight A’s in college and so am I. I have no sympathy for lazy generation like your son, I taught my son to work hard and keep it up because that’s exactly the mindset you need to advance…you don’t give up , you find other ways to accomplish your goals.
@@niki3434 - I can't tell him anything. He'll have to decide something like that and I doubt he'd consider it. He's rather ingrained in the rock scene here in Seattle and has his own band. But of course he can't quit his day job. He's just not seeing the rewards in working hard, long hours like he used to.
The 1st time my kid mowed the law he missed a few spots. I let it slide that time. The second time he missed some again. I asked him if he was proud of his job and made him re-mow it. From then on he never missed a spot. Mike is right you can teach work ethic.
My daughter falls in the group and she has many friends that are very lazy and entitled. However that’s not all this generation or my daughter is in a small percentage; she has a strong work ethic and is a very honest woman. Her mother and I worked hard and instilled this into our daughter. Most parents didn’t have the same involvement. That’s were is starts.

Yeah a lot of the problems come fro the boomer generation who mostly runs America. Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you all the amazing talents I have and how I am a hard worker if you treat and pay me properly. Unfortunately those in power refuse to give me a chance to use any of my talents or skills because I don’t have a degree or experience working for someone in the industry. So I’m stuck at a min wage job. Letting my talents rot. I’ve even tried going off on my own to use my talents but it never works out. Just think of all the brilliant minds being wasted because they were told they didn’t have experience or a degree it’s a tragedy.
The problem is, back in the day when people had a stronger work ethic, the companies also had an unwritten obligation to take care of their workers. Such as keeping them employed. Nowadays the companies want unlimited loyalty from the employee but don't feel any need to return that in kind. No sense of morality about letting thousands of people go at the drop of a hat through Zoom while the CEO or top management give themselves milt-million dollar raises at the same time.

Exactly and it's easy to blame the younger generations but more and more kids now are raised in single parent households or families where they have no real role model or father figure. Kids need role models in their families. It's not the school systems job to fix these problems

I'm 40yrs old and work in a mechanic shop. The two younger kids, with seniority, at my work spend the day typing on their cellphones and playing video games. They just got a 15% raise ... It hurts being told what to do by kids like this, but all that matters is payroll history or degrees. I have to listen to them talk about waiting for their parents to die so they can get a big life insurance payout and retire.
I seen a video on Instagram where these young punks had an old lady probably their grandma. Cutting down a tree that was laying over and that tree came up and almost took that ladies head off. Those punks were hoping she'd get killed.
Kids need to see parents that work. At least one parent that gets up every day and goes off to work to make money for the family while the rest of the family pitches in to keep the household functioning. Parents that have a passion for their work will pass that passion to their children. Government handouts without work leads to laziness and families that are dependent upon the government for generations. I told my children to find their passion, the thing they love, and then find a job doing it; or work to get to that position. They all did and are now successful adults.
It's not just that they're LAZY Add into the intolerable behavior.. Tattoos, piercings, obesity, obnoxious Green, yellow, pink, Blue dyed hair, lack of motivation, zero common sense, Etc etc etc etc
The issue I have seen all too often is the younger, less driven employees tend to get the praise just for showing up. In the meantime, those with the strong work ethic and drive to improve the company, are rarely acknowledged or simply ignored. That's resulted in many who simply took early retirement, to move on to other things or places where they would be appreciated, or even go on their own. Meanwhile, those younger workers will bounce as soon as they can get an offer for more money, still doing less. It's basically the focus to try and 'motivate' those with less of a work ethic, by shunning those who go above and beyond and don't even receive a simply 'thank you' from the bosses. It's difficult for those with such strong work ethics to keep motivated, when they see that nothing they do seems to be acknowledged, while those who just barely do the minimum seem to get the awards and accolades just for showing up.
Yup very it’s very much like that in the retail job space. Although I don’t see the lazy being praised. However I have notice favorites being played when I see someone who just started 3 months ago promoted to hr and I’ve been working hard just to move up to anything better.
In 1967 Uncle Sam requested my presence for an on-the-job training program. Before he hired me at 19, I was a lazy irresponsible kid, I quickly found that my former behavior was deemed unacceptable in my new job with severe consequences for any of us that tried to take the easy way out. Getting up at 4:30 and working until dark was difficult at first but soon became the norm. I thrived at my new job and advanced in rank and responsibility at an alarming pace. Three years later Uncle Sam sent me home with a new work ethic, he had taught me how to be a MAN. I was married with a kid by this time, going back to college wasn't on the radar for me, I had a family to support. I took an entry level job in a coal fired power plant; the plant was hot, noisy, dirty and the work was on a rotating shift. After being trained on how to work under adverse conditions and never allowed quit by Uncle Sam, the power plant wasn't all that bad, the money exceeded any of my college educated friends salaries, the benefits included an amazing retirement plan, full health insurance and vacation time. I put my nose to the grindstone and retrained myself to advance up the ladder. In 30 years, I went from sometimes shoveling ashes in the basement of the plant to running the round the clock operation of the entire plant. The system in place required one to work every position from the bottom to the top for a required number of years in each position to advance. I retired at age 52, financially secure to the point that I didn't feel the need to look for another paying job. I was still a work-aholic but shifted to volunteer work of a very physical nature like managing large land leases of several thousands of acres for hunting clubs. My advice is learn how to get your hands dirty and work like a man even if you are a woman. The job I hired in at paid 6K a year in 1970, the same job starts out at 72K now with a bump up after the year and a half training period to 92K ($42 an hour) with time and half for overtime and there will be as much overtime as you want to work. That is the kind of salary you can build a real future on if you don't buy into the "college is everything" myth. Two requirements, you will have to work in adverse conditions at times and second, never allow yourself to wimp out and quit because the going gets tough.

I retired from the Air Force with a great work ethic. I did the crappy jobs and stayed late, started early etc. In the company I worked for all I got was loaded up with more work while the other employees just stood around !
The generation from our past should not be dismissed. We are America because of the people from the past. Hopefully we will continue to learn and grow from the lessons, but never erase them.
I can totally concur on the trades. Our son 25 years is in a trade making more $$ than many college grads. And there is such a demand for apprentices it’s ridiculous. That’s where the money is. But you have to get your hands dirty. So no wimps need apply

I’m a 53 year old equipment operator who works with 3 individuals that are still in there late 20’s and there late every day have an excuse for why they need to leave early every other day and you could roll them all together and still couldn’t get a good days work out of them it’s really sad to see the direction the country has gone in
A strong work ethic still plays a part in my retirement. There are chores around the property on a hot day I would rather avoid, but still must be done because of self-motivation.
Wawa, backup this woman had an excellent excellent point. Companies need to start hiring kids right out of high school rather than let him go through the indoctrination process in college this way the companies would have more influence on how to make a better more productive employee
They had technical trades but have dropped them in favor of college prep classes, poor kids get degrees they can’t even use, USA doesn’t have the influential impact on the market like it was once, now, all the US is ? Is in debt
In Australia pupils who express an interest in a trade are encouraged to BEGIN their apprenticeship WHILST at SCHOOL (part time from school), and they can already be partly be qualified by the time they finish high school and move smoothly into employment. It works well as they are spending part of their school hours actually being educated in their future vocation.
Sorry Mike, but companies now EXPECT this behavior, WITHOUT the REWARD for the extra effort. If you consider a 2% merit raise as worth this extra effort, then you are as lost as employers today.
No one wants to show up for work and when they do they are always late. Then some friend of a friend's friend has health problems and their whole week is destroyed so they leave work and ask for time off because they are devastated when it was someone they didn't even know or have a connection with. I can understand expressing condolences but to be unable to function for a week or more? What the hail has happened to our country?
My wife's young cousin just graduated with her masters. Very proud of her for doing that but she has never worked anywhere because her parents said degree first then work but she is 180k in debt and the only job she could get was a secretary position because she has no work experience and she is 26. That is a huge problem this younger generation faces. They feel because they have a degree means they can just start out making good money but that isnt the case.
My little sister went to art school pretty high up education, I went along to find her a room and basically looked after her as her older brother. Kids drunk not cleaning that sort of thing. Waist of time and money, I meanwhile went to night school to be a car mechanic, quit that and just started working as one, couple years later started my own company. That company is now 15 years old and life is sweet and easy. Nobody I know that I grew up with uses their degrees for the job they work, but I make the most money by far.
For as long as there has been a Mike Rowe “working man’s” show on TV, I’ve wondered why he wasn’t one of our choices for President. He has been EVERYWHERE, done EVERYTHING, & bonded with EVERYONE! He might be the one individual in the U.S. who might, with insight and understanding, lead this country out of it’s abysmal, abominable, and politically intentional situation! Once more into the breach MR… be the MAN!

I agree with you on FJB, but it’s not the parents’ job to teach the kids. That’s the teachers’ job. Hence their job title: TEACHer. We just need to reform the education system. Make it clear to the teachers if they don’t do their job, we’ll abolish school, lay them all off, and take their money and give it to the parents to compensate the parents for having to do the teachers’ jobs for them. Why would parents teach their kids when they’re being forced by the government to pay thousands of dollars in property taxes under the promise that money will be used to hire professionals to teach their kids for them? If parents have to teach their kids, then that would make teachers pointless and useless.
Most people can learn most career fields by doing them and moving bottom to top. The difference of success and failure; fortitude and work ethic. No degree gives you those.
Im 22 years old and just enrolled in job corps about 6 months ago, currently working towards my certification in Building Construction Technology. I was tired of working job to job for such little pay knowing I could be putting the same effort into learning a trade. But I tell you, goin to Job Corps is probably the smartest move I’ve ever made. We learn just about everything ( plumbing , carpentry, HVAC, flooring, basic tools, forklifting, excavation, you name it). Pretty much the jack of all trades. They also have other trades such as painting, culinary, business and many more based on location. But guys I highly recommend it for any adults wanting their children ages 16-24 to get their foot in the door.They even provide free meals, housing, transportation and diplomas as well as placing you in a job once you finish. Coming from a small town just outside of Atlanta, I can say it was not an easy transition but it was definitely worth it. Just a heads up👍Wish me luck.
I am VERY proud to say, my sons work long, hard hours and are doing so much better that we did and , yes, we worked long, hard hours to get where we are today, 53 years later!
Men, do not hesitate for one moment to put a restraining order against your female partner if you feel your safety and health is in jeopardy. Placing a permanent restraining order on my female partner was absolutely the wisest protective move of my adult lifetime. My only regret is not doing it years earlier. Men, be safe!

Mike Rowe is someone to work with and these kids need to pay attention! Being a plumber is a field that has a massive upside and can be upwards to 150k a year easily! Electricians the same. Just go into construction and you can get me with a small bathroom for 8k!! Mike R is the best and these kids need to understand what the future is.
Show up early for the crappy task? So your boss can buy a bigger boat, or spend an extra week on vacation in a five star hotel because he gets a bonus tied to productivity? People are wising up about how the benefits of work are being shared, and not shared.
This was my coworker. After 3 schedule changes in 45 days, I and another worker asked when there would be a fixed schedule, and if this fixed schedule would have a 2nd shift. I was let go for not being able to adhere to the fluctuating schedule despite having 10 years of experience in the sector; the “snowflake” is still retained. I think it’s clear by now, they want compliance and obedience; productivity, quality, work ethic and experience are no longer virtues present or rewarded in the American economy, unfortunately. Perhaps this is why skilled American tradesmen have decided to retire early and expatriate to countries that actually reward what this propaganda preaches America is all about… when it actually isn’t ✌️
I've learned more of an education from my work training and specific "classes" offered by my company than ANY college or university could EVER teach me for ANY amount of money, started out at the bottom, cleaning bathrooms, dedication and my personal good work "ethics" allowed me to advance up through the "ranks", I've been with a company for nearly 30 years, been making 6 figures for about the last 10 years. Don't discourage work ethics and don't worry about the other people around you who don't have them, just worry about yourself, in the end you'll do fine.
Whenever I see a young adult working hard, learning with desire to better themselves, I will do whatever I can to support them. Even if it's buying lunch for a stranger.
Trade jobs still don't pay enough. If you have a trade and work for yourself you can do good but working for a company you will be overworked and under payed due to shortages of skilled tradesmen causing you to need to work OT every week. Then you have these idiots with their college degree looking down on you and refusing to pay you what your worth cause they think you don't have a degree so why should you make more than someone with one. It is sad that nowadays a mechanic that works 6-7 days a week can barely afford a car a house and to feed the family.
"Wasted degrees" - NAILED IT! My brother in law has an Electrical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech. How many days has he worked as an electrical engineer? Zero. Very successful and very happy, but has never - ever - worked in his field of education. Which I think is a shame, he's a very bright guy and would have been a good engineer. But he never wanted to work for someone else.

Pay them well, treat them right, don't overload them because they can finish tasks faster then others. These few things have completely changed our companies retention rate issue, and employee happiness.
My college degree was more than a degree I grew up in college and learned about society and cooperation and getting things done without my parents hounding me. I had a lot of character building that would not have happened had I not gone to college. And I have built on my degree as I have worked in other fields.
I don’t mind coming in early or staying late if I get paid for it. Too many employers quietly promote employees without compensation. It’s called work, which requires compensation.
I graduated college in 1982. My college cost was 20% more than what my parents paid for their house. Cost is relative to how you measure it. My Parents paid $13,000 for their house. I paid $18,000 for college. Paid off my loans in the first 10 years. Starting pay back then was $20-25 k annually. Just info. I’m also 65 retired and work 3 days a week at a bike store . I help people get mobile and stay mobile well into their 80s. What a great opportunity I have.
Dagan "we shouldn't have gone to college because we're not in fields that we studied, they were wasted degrees" BUT, those degrees opened doors to other opportunities that have allowed you to become very wealthy. So, it wasn't a waste of time or money.
Yeah I get tired of hearing that bs. She wouldn’t be anywhere close to this job if she hasn’t received an education. As poorly as she communicates, I’m sure she improved significantly during her post-secondary years. No matter what you’re doing now, if you cared about your education and invested time in learning, it has helped you. (Though I’m looking at colleges today and thinking it’s less helpful than it was when she attended in the 90s).
I thought the same thing when I heard the comment. She might not be working in her field of study, but I highly doubt she'd be interviewing Mike Rowe right now if she never went to college.
Showing up early, staying late and taking on the difficult tasks nobody else wants to do would be an easier sell if those efforts were rewarded more often than they actually are.
Some companies demand that and that you don't clock in until the time your shift starts and clock out before you're done for the day. What's the point of work ethic if the company has no ethics by demanding you work without pay?
Its really not rewarded most of the time. Say for example you came in just 30 minutes early every day and stayed 30 minutes late. Over the course of the week, you've worked five extra hours for free. If you do that 48 weeks a year thats an extra 240 hours or six weeks of free work- probably more hours than all the vacation and holiday pay you get for the whole year.
@@johntracy72 At my first office job I got in trouble for that. I was told not to clock in more than two minutes early, or clock out more than two minutes late, because if it was more they’d have to pay me, and it wasn’t budgeted for my position.
As you did doing the first 2 years at a community college cuts the cost almost in half. Both me and my wife got our degrees that way. I saw no downside from attending the community college first. In fact some of my best instructors were at the community college. In addition the class sizes were much smaller than those at 4 year universities. Idid one summer class and had some other students from prestigious 4 year colleges and they were all impressed by the class.
As long as you Don't work at The Home Depot... Strong work ethic and willingness does not mean a thing to them they are looking for the ones that will just conform to everything they tell them to do... Stepping up taking on extra shifts covering for people that called in ETC is completely overlooked and in return for doing so you get your hours cut instead of increased...
Interesting comment. I think it depends on the particular HD store. I frequently visit two stores in different towns. The larger store in the bigger town has much fewer employees than the smaller store in the smaller town. I’ve actually overheard employees at the big store talk about clocking out early to help preserve jobs. The employees at the smaller store seem happy and bombard me with offers to help as soon as I walk in the store. Recently at the larger store I needed a piece of plywood to be cut. Nobody came to help me. Eventually somebody did it for me. From what I gathered, he actually did work at the store but was there on that day getting supplies for his side gig.

My dad had his head in the clouds like this as well. He tried to teach me that ethic. I told him it wasn’t 1960 anymore things are different and in most cases busting your butt going above and beyond just makes you a sucker.

Schools are a big part of the issue, i grew up being told that we had to get a 4 year degree to get a job. They even had a class that was dedicated to having us look up jobs and write resumes and the entire course was spent drilling it into our heads that we would never succeed without going to college. My wife and i both now have a bunch of dept after the school we were going to and took out loans to attend merged and the professors left and the courses went away and the staff change caused issues with our loans and we couldnt come up with the money. It took us a few years to be in a position to go back to school. We managed to pay for my wife to go to a local school and get a 2 year drafting degree out of pocket then we she finished i went back and got the same degree. She now makes more then many of the engineers we work with. I wish i would have gone to a trade school, we wouldnt have the student loans to deal with and would have been working years earlier. My brother (big age difference) is getting close to graduating high school and im putting it in his head to start and a community college aiming for a 2 year and go from there.
Spot on! Yes! FFA students are trained to work hard and be leaders! Totally agree with you about university degrees vs trade school or learn on the job training. Universities have gotten too expensive because we have let them. And time and again I hear from the companies hiring that the universities aren’t producing graduates that qualify for positions that are needed. Like Archaelology and Range Management for example.
It is not true please factory jobs in these mechanic jobs and everything else like that I don't know where he's getting his numbers but they're lying to him or he's lying to us
@Joshua Beeler How so? I'm a shop manager for a trucking company, and our average shop salary is around 65k, with very little overtime included in that figure. They are responsible for trailer maintenance, with no engine training necessary. Most are HS dropouts. Again, please explain your comment.
