You know you can actually start uploading your videos in 60 FPS now cause RU-vid has that support right? Or are you unable to do it cause your computers aren't powerful enough to handle the rendering size?

Cinemassacre hey, ill mange those cables for you for a nominal fee. Seeing that N64 controller cable bendt underneath the console made my cable OCD flare up and my eyes water.

[Coury] Mike this set up is looking great! You've really caught the bug with this stuff. It can be so much fun to tweak and optimize, you almost forget to actually play games for a bit. Glad to see you working with some of our good friends to pull this together. Congrats and enjoy!

To die hard emulator fans: setting up physical consoles/games is part of the collecting hobby. To us, that "unnecessary hassle waste of space" is endearing and a joy to set up. It isn't much different than a trophy or china cabinet. We're also attracted to the more authentic feel that official consoles/controllers/games provide. It takes us back to the past in a way that emulators can't.

Glad to see the improvements! No turning back now, LOL. I've never heard of a LaserActive being fully RGB modded. I think you can for the Sega and Turbo cart and CD games, but for the LaserDisc games I haven't heard of that being done since it's composite video (AV) straight on the discs themselves. I suppose it could be done if you go crazy. I'd love to see someone try. I still need to RGB mod my 3DO to play the nearly dozen good games on the system but the RGB kit no longer seems to be made. Oh, and about to RGB an Atari 2600 here...
@JamesNintendoNerd

After you help me get my LaserActive RGB modded, you can get all my Tiger Handhelds done in RGB. What's scary is I'm half joking.. Thanks for watching! -Mike

The Tigers can wait. Microvision comes first. Actually the Virtual Boy comes first because people have done it.
@FinalBaton

Indeed Joe! the Laserdisc portion of the LaserActive cannot be RGB modded, since composite video is what's stored on the discs themselves!

flat screen tvs eat up a LOT more power than CRT ones - you ever feel how WARM a flat screen is....
@crisapx
@crisapx 7 лет назад
No way in hell a CRT is more energy efficient than a LCD, and it's warmer mostly because the CRT is boxy as hell giving it better airflow. Just to power the cathode ray tube on a crt would probably power the whole LCD

I think the next step may be upgrading some of those cables Mike. Both Monster and Audioquest make excellent component output cables for the Wii (Audioquest's has a better 3-D air to the environment space and a better white point, Monster's has better color and clarity). The best currently produced vga to rgbhv or vga to rgb breakout cable for the money is Steren's Python vga to rgb/rgbhv. It's better than far more expensive cables, and the comparable or better ones are no longer being manufactured. It's usually available for $15 or less for 6 feet, but I'd recommend longer than you need due to how thick it is and the fact that it's curled up and needs to be a bit conditioned to straighten out out of the packaging. I believe Wireworld, Audioquest, and QED all make high quality scart cables, not sure of the prices secondhand off of eBay though.

I'm from Europe so there might be a difference, but there are RGB cables for PS2 and Xbox, I have them hooked up to my framemeister. Also I was wondering, do regular CRT TVs not support RGB signals in the US? Here you can simply plug the SCART-Cable into the TV, and like every TV will output the RGB signal, if there is one. (there's also composite via scart, oh and I think scart is called "EIA Multiport" in the US? )

No, you fucktard, he is obviously not talking about the 90s since the PS2 and Xbox were released in the 2000s. In the U.S., consumer CRTs from 1998 onward had component video inputs but they never had RGB scart inputs you fuck.

We luckily got TVs with scart and RGB in UK with better quality picture, so our PAL consoles had extra attachments not needed for NTSC because their TVs didn't come with it as standard. Like the little scart brick to stick on the end of composite leads.

The one and only thing I never look forward to when it comes to recording (or at least thinking up how to record) is the goddamn cable management. It's okay if you only have like six systems, but when you include like 10 or more systems it gets hard, you need splitters, enough sockets etc and oh boy the moment you need to be back there to redo something is the moment you wish you had done it right from the getgo.
@ThatRedPluto
@ThatRedPluto 7 лет назад
i personally use av to HDMI upscaler boxes i buy from ebay, and specific consoles such as Wii and PS2 i have adapters that directly plugs into the output port of these consoles and outputs the signal to an HDMI port (you can find them by searching "Wii to HDMI" or "PS2 to HDMI"), so if you would like to use more of HDMI cables, i highly suggest looking up those devices, since they are also very cheap to get.

I did a component video mod on my Laseractive. similar to an RGB mod. it's not as hard as you might think edit: just to be clear, the component video only works with the sega and turbografx-16 PACs. the laserdisc games are analog composite and will never be anything better than that

Nice, you picked up the same or almost the same monitor I have (I've got the medical version of the 20L2.) I have a couple videos of recording video directly from the screen with a DSLR, but clearly if you can capture RGB over the wires that'll be better for gameplay videos. Lookin good, Mike!
@danxepha4535
@danxepha4535 7 лет назад
I've always found it odd that there was never a proper RGB solution in the US. Here in the UK it was always just the standard. I can't even imagine having to watch DVDs or cable TV through composite video, but I presume that was all that was available to you. I wonder why you missed out?
@TomTheDragon87

Ooh. This is awesome. I was wondering if you guys were aware of RGBs, since you always played from composite. One very important thing that you must do on your monitor, is to attach 75 ohm termination (adapters?) to the 4 RGBs out ports on your professional video monitor (tv). You'll see the brightness and contrast of your games improve greatly. The colors on your games will truly pop.

You are wrong that DVD recorders record at 30fps. Yes the files contains 30fps but they record at 480i 60fps and combine the 60 interlaced fields into 30 frames. Any good video editing software will deinterlace that back to 480p 60fps. Though their deinterlacers are optimized for true 480i video so 240p games will look bad. You can use a program like Handbrake that can do BOB deinterlacing which is perfect for 240p footage and get 480p 60fps from your DVD recordings.

great setup, Mike, what happened to those xrgb or fury or what where they called that upscaled with only one frame lag to hdmi? i presume its something similar electronically you have had done with your n64, from analogue to digital at least, just without scaling maybe, since that is actually not the slow process from my experience. I read somewhere gpu scaling now adays is actually done in nano seconds, not even milliseconds, so thats absolutely amazing in preserving the ability to play old outputs, not just view them

Yeah rgb is a deep rabbit hole and once you go down it it’s addictive as hell! I currently don’t use scart but do have my Xbox, PS2, & Wii hooked up via component video-Sega Master System, Sega Genesis/CD2/32X, & SNES component as well via cables from HD Retrovision (fantastic quality!), PS4 & Xbox 360 are HDMI-N64, PS1, & Dreamcast are via factory S-video cables (not RGB but way better than composite video) NES front loader is still composite video(May RGB mod my top loader in the future) and finally my Atari 2600 is just RF( no desire to mod this as I hardly play it) all of these run to a CRT minus the HDMI stuff.

Great video, I've never tried RGB unless you count regular Component video/S-Video/VGA and other PC inputs. But I recall noticing the difference instantly when switching an XBOX 360 from A/V to Component while on the Gears of War 2 menu screen. I couldn't read a damn thing on A/V but on component it was crystal clear. This was on a modern (2005-ish) CRT TV, about a...25-27 inch one where reading any sort of small text easily wouldn't be expected. So yeah, it definitely makes a difference. I'd say you're doing it all pretty acceptably considering it's all used for recordings. Not really too crazy.

Hey Mike, Question: I noticed that you capture game footage at 60.00 fps, and was wondering if you have had any issues. I ask because, as a video producer myself, I'm aware that the true standard of 60fps is actually 59.96 fps. Similar to how true 30fps is actually 29.97 fps. (At least in the US.) So I was curious if you were you experiencing any kind of audio drift (audio slowly going out of sync) on your game capture footage, or any other kind of other weirdness. If you are, well now I hope you have your answer. And if not, then that's very interesting to me. Take care!
