A lot of people (myself included) realized when the demo version of In The End dropped, that Mike has always been a top-tier rapper. But even more than that, he's been a top-tier songwriter and bandmate, which is why he dialed back his rap parts and severely simplified them in the final version of In The End, because that fits the song better. It's a similar story in many of the other demo songs, but to me on In The End it stands out the most.

The funny thing about this story to me is that Amy Lee of Evanescence mentioned that when her band were recording their debut album the record exec working with them wanted to add a rapper to the group because that was all the rage in the early 2000s. She had to fight the record exec to let them do their own thing. Having a rapper wouldn't have been a fad if the record exec had his way and got Mike out of the band.

Im reminded of what Zappa once said about the state of affairs in the music industry... where it shouñd be in good habds, because these guys grew up being fans of great music. The studio interfered so much on Evanescence. On the song Bring Me to Life, the male singing in it was added by the studio after the song was already recorded because the studio thought it wouldn’t sell without a man in it.

"The dude, he said that, like When we were making the first Linkin Park record He was like: "Yeah you know, I don't know about the rapping like, I don't know... If it's like. Maybe you should just be a rock band." You know what I mean, like, trying to change us Like they signed us as an act like what we sound like And then he's like: "Oh I don't know maybe you should just play keyboard" Before the first song that you heard me on There were people already tryin' to get me gone Tellin' me to quit rapping, "Just play the keys" That my band had a singer, they didn't need me But my band had my back so we did the tracks Put out the album and the talk went flat It was funny at first but then the humor faded When some magazines printed that our label made us We were to be good to be true Some were saying ghost writers were writing all that we do So we had to disprove it: We spelled it out to the detail how we do it when we're making this music After that I made it a rule: I only do E-mail responses to print interviews Because these people love to put a twist to your words To infer that you said something fucking absurd Oh, did I lose you at "infer"? Not used to hearing a verse that uses over first grade vocabulary words? People used to "infer" that we were manufactured Now I've got the interviews on file Which people said what, which number to dial So now every enemy screaming insanity All they're ever gonna be's another big fan of me Bitch Can you believe that? Like it's crazy, it sounds crazy right? Like at this point, at this point you're thinking, you hear it out and you're like "That guy was out of his mind" But honestly that's what he wrote Besides the fact that he wanted me to just play keyboard or whatever He didn't want me to rap He was like "Maybe Joe Hahn should, um Wear a lab coat and a cowboy hat" on, like when we play I swear to God he was crazy And later on he claimed he wrote all our songs so that was really bad."

Yeah after seeing them from the start of LP to the unfortunate finish I can't see them being a band anymore it's never going to be the same and it would be a huge huge task for the new singer just to cope with the whole thing. It was a privilege to be able to experience their rise from being called Hybrid Theory then them changing the name to LP because of the Lincoln Park and all, I only saw them once and I have to be honest it wasn't the best live gig I was on i was kind of disappointed but I get it it was so fu¢King cold and it was like June and man it was freezing and it was a outside gig the sound was terrible and you can see they were tired after South America tour, then I was supposed to see them and my another favourite band P.O.D in Warsaw in Polish state/country of Europe but they cancelled and that was it, man sometimes people are complaining and I'm the same i do complain but what a privilege it was to see all the bands from 90s and early 00s live, Deftones, Staind, Limp Bizkit, Korn, System of the down, Blink 182 just after they got back together , iLL ninio and that was probably one of the best because venue was cancelled but they were so cool that they booked the voodoo bar and played in the small pub that most of bands only starting at and because I knew security guys I was able to stay with them and we drinked to the early morning then they got on the tour bus , Twin Atlantic just on top of my head. @PenneySounds

Their story is amazing. It's the same story you hear over and over, especially in entertainment. Take George Lucas for example. He had the same thing with Star Wars. Before the first one came out, it was all "You shouldn't do it that way, people don't like this kind of thing, it will never be successful, it's too much of a risk" And then one person says "okay, I'll give you one chance to do it the way you want to do it, but we all know it's going to fail completely and you'll never get another chance to do more". And then it releases and is a massive runaway hit, and suddenly those same people are coming back like "I always believed you could do it. I knew from the start this was going to be a hit. Now make sure you keep making more just like this and don't ever change a thing or try anything creative. Just turn this into a formula and make it over and over." Same thing happened with Stan Lee and Spider-Man, the Wachowskis with The Matrix, even happened to The Beatles. It's the "too risky" creative endeavours that find massive success, while the "safe bets" fail and are forgotten.
@flux_casey
@flux_casey Год назад
Not really. Record and studio executives are risk averse, but they're not stupid. You see someone like Linkin Park doing things differently and getting wild success and it's like "These suits don't know what they're doing, you gotta take chances!" Problem is, you don't see the thousands of other artists who also wanted to and were allowed to take chances. Because you never heard of them. Because they failed. An artist doing what everyone else is doing is more likely to get *some* success. A fresh idea has a chance of being the Next Big Thing, but that chance is so much smaller than people realise having only seen the success stories. It's a huge gamble.

Chester told them to go f*ck yourselves and how it wasn't HIS band. He left that meeting and went to Mike and the guys right away and told them what had just happened and on what he said to them. That was the moment that solidified their bond as brothers. That's when all 6 members of the band knew in that moment they had each others backs 100% no matter what. Especially with Mike and Chester, they admired, supported, and were protective over each other. They always thought of themselves as a wild card, they loved expermenting with different genre/styles, and making music that has meaning and people can relate the message to wheather its on a personal level or whats going on in the world. They have always been open and honest on what they were going to do so they wouldn't mislead anyone.They are not like other bands. Never have they've always been unique. They do things that THEY want to do and not what others want them to be. After the label realized the success off of their 1st album after all the BS, the label wanted them to keep doing the same thing as before, and thats not what they wanted. So, they broke out of that very quickly, the label finally backed off of them during Meteora and let them do things their own way by doing it independently with just a little bit of guidance from Rick Ruben. Mike/Brad produced their music, Mike/Chester wrote the songs and then Brad got more involved with the writing in their last album, Mike /Joe came up with art ideas for their albums, Joe also directed majority of their music videos, Mike/Joe came up with set designs/visuals on how they want the stages to be on tour, Mike also did the band merchandise and created their web design. They did EVERYTHING that THEY WANTED to do. If anything, "Linkin Park" is its own genre. They were a very special different kind of band and did it by their own rules. Thats what I love about this band and the chemistry that they have. All 6 of them were/are very talented in many different things and each of them had something to contribute to the band.

Yup, even Chester had said it MANY MANY times. That's one of the things that I love about Mike and Chester with their brotherly bond they never bragged about themselves. Instead, Chester is the one that tells others on how amazing Mike is in literally everything that he does for the band, his creativity and as a human, and Mike always did the same with Chester about his impressive range of vocals, his passion and also as a human. Chester was the one who pushed Mike out of his comfort zone to also sing more than just doing the rap stuff so he could do both. Because he really loved Mike's singing voice. Mike once said that he couldn't believe that Chester of all people thought that he had a good singing voice and how he loved his vocals and felt very honored by that. He considered Chester as the best vocalist in their time and that he would challenge anyone to try to sing against Chester, lol. In one of the interviews that Mike did for the "OML" album, he told them how he was doing less rapping but doing more singing. He told them how it couldn't be any better because "I get to sing 7 days a week next to Chester who is the best vocal coach" and instead of talking about how good he sounded on it. Instead, he tells them on how blown away they will all be by Chester's singing in the "One More Light" album. Because (outside of his band, friends, family, and some of the fans) not many have really heard his actual singing voice like he did with the cover of "Rolling in the Deep."

Yeah, Linkin Park really wouldn't have had any effect at all on the world of music if they catered to what the label wanted, more than likely. Weird to think about that alternate reality.

How did they not want Mike rapping when fucking Kid Rock, POD, Limp Bizkit, and Rage all had rapping on their albums? Nu-metal was specifically known for rap + metal.

I remember Tom Morello saying in a interview that at the beginning when Rage got signed that a record exec told them the band was good but they needed to get rid of the ''rap thing''. And he told at the end that when the interview was over they were about to yet meet again with the same major label exec to see if he had the same opinion, after RATM have sold millions already. Just to rub it in his face haha

Yeah you know, I don't know about the rapping like, I don't know... maybe you should just be a rock band. You know what I mean, like, trying to change us like they signed us as an act like what we sound like and then he's like Oh I don't know maybe you should just play keyboard Before the first song that you heard me on There were people already tryin' to get me gone Tellin' me to quit rapping Just play the keys That my band had a singer They didn't need me
