Skinner, Sprauge, and Hornaday. The best 3 truck series drivers of all time in my mind. Would love to see that Goodwood truck. That truck is badass.

I just want to say this that it was Dale Earnhardt and Mike Skinner in trucks that got me interested in NASCAR and I've been a fan ever since. I always liked Mike Skinner because he was hard-charging and he would not back down. That's why I like Ross Chastain. And I feel like that had senior not died, Mike Skinner would have got some wins in the cup series. I'm just happy to see some people in NASCAR now giving Mike Skinner his just dues. And I feel like that's Mike Skinner and Dale Earnhardt jr. We're the ones that really truly got NASCAR educated on concussions that drivers have received.

Those drivers in the first season of trucks should all be remembered as legends!

I became interested in NASCAR around 1990-1991. Davey was my driver and was enamored by the looks of the 28. He was also a cool dude. My dad flew for a coal company in which the owner and his son owned a Truck Series team, the #60 driven by Andy Houston and Travis Kvapil with Rick Ren as crew chief. This meant getting to fly Andy and team members around so he got to know them a little bit. We got free tickets for the inaugural race at Kentucky to support the team. Lots of fun in those days. Seeing you take viewers back in time to see these bits of history is important because it shows how far we have come in tech advancement but also give people a glimpse of what things were like then and how it might have drawn fans to the sport, back when the focus was on competition and less on entertainment.

I started watching NASCAR early 80s. My father worked for General Motors for 52 years so of course we were Dale Earnhardt fan then the super trucks started of course Number 3 good wrench truck so Mike Skinner was our guy that was such an awesome series I loved it. I’m so glad you did this video. Thank you.

In 95 I was just out high school, it was my first full year of working full time. I'd heard about the series beforehand, I knew it was going to be awesome. Three big channels that I grew up with was turning into cable TV. Couldn't always watch the truck race, but I knew that it was going to be a crazy race if I could get to see it.

My first truck race was when mike flipped at Charlotte on the front stretch! Sounded like a bomb went off! Been watching racing since I was a baby my dad drove dirt late models at Cherokee speedway in gaffney so I’ve been around it my whole life

I got to know the owner that gave Mike his second ride. Thee Dixon.. He told some great stories about Mike. Thee said if Mike complained on the radio about the car that Thee would say " looks like you're gonna be setting up the car next time " lol Then there was an arca race at Atlanta where Mike stayed out under caution to get the lead and Thee told him he needs to pit and Mike said " no no I want to wait for a caution " and said " if you stay out any longer your gonna be the caution" and sure enough he was . Ther said he made sure Mike was at the shop to help fix the car .

Fan since 04 remember watching nascar on and off with my dad before that but I personally didn't start following and understanding it all till 04. Love watching old races from the 90s and 2000s on youtube miss the 04 to 07 Era of nascar but still watch and enjoy what they do now for what they are. It's a sport with a lot of rich history. My whole life I've been exposed to NASCAR. I was taken to my first event at Talladega in 1992 at the Diehard 500. I've been to multiple races all around the U.S. since that time. I was ten and my father said he would never forget me standing at the fence and after the cars went by I turned around with huge eyes and a smile he would never forget. I had little pieces of rubber on my face. I've been fortunate to have driven a stock car around Talladega and seen races at several tracks. Your videos to me are the best about the history of this beautiful sport. You guys are the best. My first truck race I just remember being stunned at how good the racing was in that series. Rick Crawford Jack Sprague Dennis Setzer and Mike Skinner were all guys I remember just thinking they were real life super heros. Lol I'm now 42 and my love for this sport has done nothing but gotten stronger over the years. You all stay Blessed and thank you for all the videos that take so many of us to a place in time we all got to experience as children.

Sat next to the father of the engine builder in the first official "SUPER TRUCK" race in Phoenix. That man was so proud to have his son's engine, truck, driver win the race. I was and always will be an Earnhardt fan so it was only natural to pull for that black 3. Became a Skinner fan that day. Got an autograph on my Super Truck Racing magazine from Ron Hornaday that day also. Good times when NASCAR was still fairly gritty. I have alot of that first race and the celebration with the engine builders father recorded on 8 mm video. I love it when your vids take me back like that. Cheers brother.

This video showed up in my Home Feed this morning. Skinner is still a “STUD”, talk about a working man turned big time racer! Great interview, brought back a lot of old memories. I agree with you both that the Truck Series is more fun to watch than Cup.

I started Nascar 1975. I was 11, went to a race at Rockingham, and in 1977 went to Darlington. As an adult, I went to the Rock twice a year most of the time. Was at the last race there at the Rock. Started going to Charlotte's October race for about 6 years straight . We would camp all weekend. Now I don't go to as many races I watch on TV. I live in Spring Lake, NC. So, a big fan of your channel have left comments before. Keep up the great work.

We were introduced to the Skinner family back in 2010 at a truck race that was there at the same time as our ARCA race. We were cooking for the team in the motorhome lot when this large friendly Doberman came and sat with its tongue hanging out watching me cook. The diamond-studded caller had a tag that said Tundra on one side and Skinner on the other so we knew who he belonged to. When we told one of his assistants the next day that we had hung out with Tundra the day before they were not happy. Somebody that was supposed to be babysitting him fell asleep on the job.

I’ll never forget the way Dale Earnhardt used Mike Skinner’s #31 Lowe’s car as a pick to get to the front and lead the field in his last win at Talladega in 2000. I love everything you do my friend. "Being 55 years old" I feel that the era you cover always takes me to a time when NASCAR was real. I love racing and still love NASCAR but it's just not what it was to me at all. Please keep doing all that you do ..........so this old man can keep reliving what I feel was the hay day of NASCAR. My intro was going to my first NASCAR race in 2000 at the 600. My aunt and uncle said I had to pick a driver. I chose Matt Kenseth as my dad used Dewalt tools and from what I could tell Matt seemed like a super nice guy. Well as we know he won that race and on his polish victory lap we were in turn 2 and most everyone left our section of stands. So with me in Dewalt hat and shirt he seemed to slow up in my mind and I remember it as he saw me there cheering him on waving at me. From then on I was hooked!! Now sharing that same kind of experience with my Son and us being Larson fans and getting to meet him at our local dirt track a few weeks ago he has the same bug I had!! Love the channel and keep it up!!

I'm 53 and i used to love Nascar but Ididn't like the direction it was going and I haven't watched a race in over 10 years and I'm not the only one. Ironically I still love Nascar history which is why I watch your channel!!!

I watched Mike Skinner when the truck series started. I worked at Lowe's from 1995 to 1999 so Mike was everywhere. It was a great time to be a race fan.

We used to raced against Mike back in the day when he'd come from Susanville, Ca to Tahoe-Carson Speedway(T-Car). Not the best at the time but it was very cool to see the success he went on to have. Well done Mike👍

I started watching NASCAR in the late 80's early 90's when I was a kid. I got to watch both the Trucks and Busch cars at Nashville Fairgrounds in '96 when I was a teenager, been hooked ever since. Keep doing these videos man, I don't think you fully realize how important they are.

Great Video. Always loved watching Mike in this truck! I was born in 1986 in Alabama. So i grew up watching during the golden era IMO. My Grandad raced short tracks with The Alabama Gang and many guys during the 70s and 80s. I was a fan out my moms womb😂 Earnhardt & Davey were my heroes. I can remember exactly the day Davey had the helicopter crash. My uncle was at dega that day, he was helping on Jeff Purvis' team practice. But i remember when Skinner and the trucks began and it was an awesome time to be a fan!!! Him and Hornaday were incredible!!! Banging off each other! I remember that pass on Labonte. I remember watchin him the race in Japan. On TV obviously😂 Great memories. Watching him and Earnhardt dominate at Dega and Daytona. Always up front. I always had alot of respect for Mike!!!! I was 21 years old when the truck series started. I have been a fan of many forms of motorsports since I was a child. I remember (barely) seeing reading magazine articles about Don “The Snake” Prudhomme when he drove the Army sponsored Chevy Monza Funny Car. I remember reading old “Stock Car” magazines when DW was in the Mountain Dew Buick Regal for Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough in the Hardee’s Monte Carlo, and of course I was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. I still remember when they unveiled the black GM Goodwrench paint scheme and the 80’s Monte Carlo SS is the best looking car ever in the Cup series it’s not even close. I rooted for Mike because he drove that black number 3, and he didn’t disappoint, dominating the series and winning the first two championships. So good to see him on here, and he looks great. Thanks for shining a light on a truly golden era of NASCAR, and not letting it be forgotten.

in 1995 i was racing a street stock car at portland speedway and the craftsman truck series came to race at the track so i got in to the pits during that race and met richard petty and got his autograph and i walked right in to skinners pit, i walked right next to that truck in this video and and found skinner and the only thing i had on me was my own nascar drivers license so i asked him to sign it. He signed my nascar drivers license on top of that truck in this video and he went on to win the championship that year which was the first year of the trucks. Ive been a skinner fan ever since.

My Dad and I watched Nascar as long as I can remember. He was a Jeff G fan, so naturally I was too. The Skinner and Hornaday rivalry got me hooked on the truck series probably 15 years ago. Also it's funny you hang around the Wallaces. One of my first memeories was telling my uncle and I quote "Rusty Wallace sucks". 3-4yr old me had no idea who Rusty even was lmao.

I was fascinated by cars and racing at a very early age, but the seminal moment came in 1990 when my mom got us cable. That was like entering a new universe for me; NASCAR, IndyCar, F1, NHRA, IMSA, etc. etc. To see my heroes, Mario Andretti, Alan Kulwicki, and others week after week was just the best thing. To this day, the early 1990s are my favorite years of motorsport. Thanks, mom! Mr. Quick is such an interesting character. Thanks again for doing what you do! Great interview!

Man, 1995 seems like yesterday and 30 years ago all at the same time lol. I was just getting started in my career back then. I've always been a truck guy in general (though I love all forms of motorsports) so the truck series has had my interest quite a bit through the years. Great interview with Mike - always enjoy hearing from the perspective of the guys who were there and racing in those years.

Wow that was an awesome interview, we raced at Redwood AcresRaceway and would run the open comps when Mike ran there. I thought it was so cool that a local guy made it big and drove for RCR in the trucks and cup series. Our crew chief was good friends with Jimmy Ellidge from Redding who later went to work for RCR and he used to send us R&D parts that we ran on our late model. And Ron Hornaday man what a racer the lines that he would use at RAR were so inventive, it was a pleasure and an honor to watch both of them men race

I'm 44 I've been watching Nascar since about 1987 with my dad and we still watch to this day. We both love your guys videos and Content. The nostalgia brings back a ton of great memories. I got hooked on Nascar when I was 5 years old, in 1976. My dad started taking me to the dirt tracks in SC and GA. His uncle had a tire shop, and they would sell Hoosier tires out of a truck at the tracks. Your content is amazing and brings back so many memories.

i grew up like about 20 minutes from RIR or now Richmond Raceway. when i was young and NASCAR was in town, my dad would take me over on Friday for qualifying. At the time the gates were open and there was no admissiom to watch qualifying. my dad was smart because i was so young i coldnt tell that it wasnt a real race and if i got restless we could leave without blowing money on race tickets. he kept bringing me as i got older and then when i hit 15 it became a tradition for him to get us tickets for my birthday, again he was smart becasue i had just gotten my learners permit so i was the designated driver. fast forward 15 years and my wife is a NASCAR fan and she planned out whole wedding around being able to go to the 2015 Sanoma Race for our honeymoon. needless to say im kinda a lifer

I was at the Rockingham race in 1994 with my dad when they drove that truck around the speedway as a preview of the truck series on the pace laps before the race.... I always have that memory with my late father who passed away in 2004 on Christmas eve. One memory I hold dearest and cherish my whole life

'95 I graduated high school. I got into Nascar and racing because my grandma took me to the race track in my home town and watching a few Nascar races with her. Was pretty much instantly hooked on racing after that.

Trey Lariscy here Awesome video that matches with the McClure video. My dad was on Delma Cowart’s crew in the 90’s so all of the NASCAR from that decade is up my alley. If you’re familiar with the RU-vid video of them trying to qualify for the 500 he’s in it several times. Whoever uploaded it out 1996, but actually was 1995.

My interest in NASCAR began before I knew there was such a thing. My parents took me to stock car races at county fairgrounds in mid fifties. I continued attending local races in sixties and on rare occasion watched NASCAR on ABC Wide World of Sports ( black and white TV and we got two channels) Late 60's college,family, and career began and did not follow NASCAR again til mid nineties. There was nothing like the Super Trucks. Right down to the halfway break. Nothing like the man himself helping the confused people understand that the old man didn’t drive a truck. I was very lucky to meet Mike at a late model race here in Bristol. He’s a cool guy who still respects his fans.

My first Truck race was at Saugus in 1995, I was 12. Ken Schrader and Geoff Bodine came out to run, I'm a spotter in ARCA West now. The original Super Truck Series drivers are my heroes.

I wasn't interested in truck series at first but after watching a couple of races i was in like flynn. You and your wife are doing an amazing job creating this content it is like no other. Keep up the amazing work. Thank you for the videos.

Have grown up in the Denver/Lincolnton NC area my whole life. (travel to Mooresville often) So nascar has been a HUGE part of my childhood and is still a huge part of it today. I usually don’t miss watching a race. Truck, Xfinity and Cup. My grandfather raced way back in the 50s mostly dirt. So I guess maybe that’s where most of my love for the sport stems from. I’ve commented on a lot of videos thanking y’all for doing what you’re doing. The history of the sport needs to be kept alive and y’all are doing an amazing job keeping that train going down the track with the videos you make. So again thank y’all for continuing to do that. Hopefully will run into y’all one day with living so close. Keep it up!

I am 63 , so I was a guy with a growing family. (first child born in late 1994) Whn the truck series was created. I did love watching the truck races because they were better than the Busch series (or even the Cup races)! Always liked MIKe SKinner and his wife, I will hav to check out their RU-vid channel. My parents went every year to watch the truck races in Monroe Washington. You should have seen the look on my dad's face when he came walking in the house holding a very very used tire off of the number 3 Mike Skinner truck. That tire sat in our garage for two decades. Absolutely cool see this video.

I was watching the truck series when first started. My first truck race was at Nazareth speedway 1998. Ron Hornaday Jr. won the race. I use to volunteer to help out with security in the pit area from 1998-2000. I miss doing that when I change jobs I did go back 2004 for the last race of the track for a Busch race. I thought it was a good track. keep up the great videos. brings back good times. Been NASCAR fan since 1988

I do love the stories you get out of those you interview, I remember there was a Nascar shown back in the '70's, it was so different to the racing style here in Australia and the cars were cool. Ever since I was a toddler, I loved American cars. The interviews are so cool because it's from the other side from what we see on TV during the races. It rounds out the story behind the wins and and what helped them get to the finish line. Thank you again for bring us all the cool stories and for the memories the invoke.

I was a kid flipping channels one day and saw this weird race with weird tiny cars, won by this kid named Tony Stewart. The next year, I found myself watching the Indy 500, and look at that, there's Tony Stewart again. First NASCAR race I saw was in '97 (spring Bristol), then I pretty much followed Tony into watching more NASCAR, and have followed racing ever since, though I stopped watching NASCAR every week when they shoved the modern 4 round playoffs down our throats, now I'm all in on IndyCar. As for Mike? To me, he'll always be the Lowe's #31 driver who earned a lot more Cup wins than he got.

I started watching NASCAR around 1984 and was consumed by it until Dale was killed. That changed it for me forever. I still watch some and enjoy it but it will never be the same for me. I was fortunate to be able to follow the trucks from the very beginning. I remember when they were just running exhibition races out west before their was an actual series. I think they would do those on Thursday night thunder and some cup guys would run just to get more attention. Some of the best racing I’ve ever seen was the trucks during the first generation of drivers. Loved Skinner, Hornaday, and lots of those early guys. Mitchell, I honestly think your channel is the most important NASCAR related channel on RU-vid. You guys are doing things the “media” should have been doing long ago and you are doing it better than they ever could. You let the guests talk and that’s something most people don’t understand. Most hosts think they are the star of the show but you understand the guest is. You may be getting imitated on a few channels now but you’ll always be the best. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Thank you so much for the videos of the older NASCAR content. To answer your question at the end, I was watching the truck series in the grandstands of Richmond in the fall of 1995, the first season for the trucks. I've moved on to Indycar and IMSA as my favorite series now, but I've been watching NASCAR since the early 80's until around the mid 2000's. I was bit by the bug at the age of 2.5, I remember watching the 1977 Daytona 500 with my dad on television. I believe Richard Petty won that one. I also remember watching the 1980 Daytona 500 by myself at the age of 5 when Buddy Baker won it. Bill Elliott was my favorite driver growing up, and I was fortunate enough to be able to meet him a few years ago at Mid Ohio Sports Car course, and get 4 of my models autographed from him.

Very cool how one video/friendship seems to lead you into another one. Would be super neat to hear the other side of his stories with another truck series original like Hornaday or Sprague.

I grew up with road racing at Mosport Park in Ontario Canada. First time I saw cars on the track I was hooked. Been to F1 races there and in Montreal, Indy cars raced at Mosport, la Mons cars raced there. I own a F4 car still. All the people that I have met over 50+ years of being a racing fan have been like you and Logon. You bring me back to the paddock night walks that were part of every weekend at the track. Keep up the great videos.

Being that I grew up in Charlotte, NC, I got into NASCAR back in 1990 when I was 6 years old and when "Days of Thunder" came out - I was hooked. I became a BIG Davey Allison fan because he was such a great driver and he had the coolest Havoline black car with the red numbering. When he passed away back in 1993, I became a Kyle Petty fan because (Hint!) he drove the Mellow-Yellow car (Hint! Reminded me of "Days of Thunder") and it was such a cool car. In May 1995, when I was in the 5th grade I met Bobby Labonte. And I remember how such a cool guy he was and how nice he was. That moment made me an instant Bobby Labonte fan! That was the same week when he won the 1995 600 Coca-Cola race and I became an instant fan all the way up until the end of his career. Now, I'm a Martin Truex fan. So, I've been a fan for over 30 years now. Wow! How time has flown by. Mitch keep up the good work! I've enjoyed your RU-vid channel. Through your videos you make me go down memory lane. Another fantastic video! Always pulled for Skinner, seems like a down to earth really nice guy. Dale wasn't very receptive to having a teammate but that was how the sport was changing. Mike has always shown a ton of class when he talks about those days.I'm sure with how stubborn Dale could be it wasn't always easy! Thank you for my package today, I loved it and it made my day!!!

I grew up watching racing in the 80's to the present. I have lived in the area my whole life and still enjoy looking at the content and tours of shops I drove by all the time growing up. I appreciate the effort you guys put in to document these places because so much has changed and those telling the stories are quickly aging. We don't want to lose those memories.

I never was a fan of the Truck Series, but I remember Hornaday and Skinner racing. Loved Todd Bodine there. Rick Crawford was my favorite in All Pro. Too bad he got caught up.

Mike Skinner is truly a hero in my eyes that man would run the wheels off trucks.... I knew it was a New concept back in the day when he ran with the trucks he is a true champion just like Dale Earnhardt did I glad he took him under his wing.... He should be in the Hall of Fame!!!!

I saw Skinner at Saugus Speedway in 1995. Best race track ever had. Wish I Racing would scan the old place. As much History as any track in America.

Great interview! Brought back a lot of memories... I was working for a diecast manufacturer (Matchbox) when the Craftsman Truck Series began. I was tasked to take photos of the haulers and trucks themselves for reproduction. Met the Skinners in Hershey, PA when they brought the Goodwrench 3 Show Truck to an event at the Hershey Lodge. Great people!

I remember watching Mike race back in the mid to late 90's. My dad would always watch the races on tv on the weekends, well he would say he was watching it, but he was really napping throuhgh most of it. Dad was a big race fan. We use to go watch Ron H when he was racing the Southwest tour series. I had the opportunity to meet Ron H at Irwindale speedway in probably 2000 or so. This was after I moved home from college and got involved in racing myself. He was nice, and in just the few minutes I talked with him you could tell he was pretty intense. Years after, and after helping some local dirt and asphalt guys, I had the opportiniy to work for Jim Pettit II in the SRL series. Jim and all the crew guys were and still are awesome. We always had fun. Thanks to you for posting this video and to Mike for letting you and the rest of us in to his world to see how he is doing. I often wonder what has happend to certain drivers from times ago and wonder how they are doing now that they dont make it to the track on a weely basis.
