Mike Stern is known for a few things: He is a great bebop player, he knows his rock licks and he sounds good on everything. In this Mike Stern Lesson I am taking a look at some phrases from his solo on There Is No Greater Love of the "Standards and other songs" album.
The Mike Stern Solo on this track has many of his trademark or signature licks and, besides demonstrating what a great soloist he is, it is also a good jazz lesson if you want to have a look at how a Mike Stern Guitar Style is put together using elements from many genres and still sounding unique.

This was a lot of fun to do! I am always looking for suggestions! Like I will probably do Scofield on a rhythm changes or Metheny on a Blues 🙂 Let me hear your ideas!

I love the head nod to the "accidentals" in the high speed descending arpeggios. Our desire to have everything just so with a reason for all of it is not always the way things work... 😎. Thank You!

Yeah I am pretty sure that those are just mistakes, but they are hard to hear and I really don't think they make the solo any less brilliant! Nobody should care about a wrong note here and there :)

Hello Jens, been watching your stuff for a while, really learned a lot from your stuff as a jazz guitar student! After making some youtube videos my respect for youtubers like you has increased so much, because its not as easy as it looks! You inspire many people to keep practicing to make beautiful music, keep doing what you're doing man!

Amazingly accurate example of Stern’s signature chord stabs over a drone note on top at 7:35. Thank you!

I've always digged Mike Stern, but have been delving into his style lately upon hearing him with his power trio in '96. I first saw him with Miles Davis in '81. Lately with Frank Vignola.

@@JensLarsen To be honest, some more Mike Stern! I have a goal to get a better understanding of how Mike Stern implies so much movement over a static harmony. I lot of his pieces stay on a particular chord for quite a long time yet his solos make it sound like a lot of harmonic movement is going on. I don't think he's just superimposing a V7 chord arpeggio and moving between that and the I chord. Once I've cracked that code (understanding it at least) I would be interested in some of Pat Metheny's intervallic ideas, such as on "Have You Heard".
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
I did make two videos on Pat's playing: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pbr3WwE767I.html I don't have the impression that Mike is implying other chords on one chord, I think the ideas are quite different from that when it comes to his playing over a single chord.

Thanks for asking. For guitar, Johnny Smith, I just got hip to him because of Mary Halvorson's album with Bill Frisell, The Maid With The Flaxen Hair - A Tribute To Johnny Smith. Any analysis on Mike Stern's work on We Want Miles would be welcome (the solos on Jean Pierre and My Man's Gone Now are standouts for me, I need to spend some more quality time listening to those again). For a general non guitar player analysis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell or Mal Waldron, I dug the Herbie Hancock related videos you did and I love anything that deals with the similarities and differences between guitar and piano in jazz music. Thank's again you for all of your work.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
Thanks Paul! Food for thought I need to check out Miles in that period. The only one I have heard is You're under arrest :) I will look at ways to make something with piano players, I think Bill Evans is at the top of the list, but hopefully I can find a way to do others as well.
@paulpmanhowland7818
@paulpmanhowland7818 5 лет назад
Thanks for replying Jens. I love You're Under Arrest. This may be apocryphal, but I seem to remember Mr. Davis replying to critics that took him to task for playing pop tunes that On Green Dolphin Street was a pop tune when he played it. I put a link to one of the tunes I mentioned from We Want Miles. The guitar is pretty rock oriented but I think that was Miles Davis' preference during that period. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4a1_6u6QaKc.html

@jameserenberger931
@jameserenberger931 5 лет назад
Jens Larsen - He plays really advanced chord-melody styles. He refers to his style as “Polyphonic” because melody notes, bass lines, and chords are viewed as separate independent voices. I would love to see how you interpret what he is doing because I am still developing my finger style technique. Cheers.

He had a bad accident which left him with nerve damage in his hands and consequently has to superglue or tape the pick to his fingers. Was fortunate to see him a few weeks ago and sounds as amazing as ever. Maybe you hate him even more now! ;)
