Alright not too much on Sugar lmao. How come Carmy can call Sugar whenever he has a problem and needs help, but Sugar can’t be asked how’s she’s doing after losing their brother to suicide as well? I don’t understand the backlash she was getting on that. I don’t think it’s fair that Sugar can ask how’s he’s doing literally every single conversation they have and she can’t get the same treatment without being called selfish or “childish”. Like huh? How that make sense lol And why did Sugar’s age matter when she’s telling Carmy he never ask her how she’s dealing with life after Michael’s death? Also, Carmy didn’t even attend Michael’s funeral, so imagine how much that hurt her and then to only get anxiety calls from Carmen
In Sugar's defense, she also lost her brother, and she tries to emotionally help Carmy all the time. That's why she pushes him to go to the support meetings, but she knows how stressful and high pressure the restaurant is and doesn't want to encourage that side of things.
Carmy also works in a career with one of the highest suicide risks of any profession. Plus it's his brothers restaurant, Plus he owes Cisero 300k, he has to pay employees, has to pay for the window that got shot out. I understand that she lost a brother, but her stress is NO WHERE close to Carmy's. Yet she comes at him screaming half the time. I just don't get why she has to attack him all the time.
The main thing you gotta understand about that Carmen - Sugar interaction is that Carmy dissociates from heavy emotional situations and he barely deals with his own shit, meaning he doesn't ever inquire about Sugar who, mind you, also lost Michael. Carmy doesn't have affective responsability, he goes to Sugar when he's beaten down and he tells her what's wrong and she gets worried sick and wants to help, but he never really gets help (like, actual proper consistent help) for his situation and his shit, so Sugar ends up feeling less like his support pillar in his support network and more like an emotional punching bag. As a person you can't just expect for anyone to just take all your bitching and not end up being affected in some way if they care about you. That's why in psychology an emphasis is made on making sure not only the person being cared for is ok, but also the carers... taking care and worrying about another human being is a fucking monumental task. Sugar of course becomes angry because he only ever talks about himself and his problems but it hasn't been easy for her either. And btw saying she should just come help with the restaurant and that nothing's stopping her is crazy in my opinion. Just because the show somewhat revolves around Carmy doesn't mean that Sugar's life has to. She sees the restaurant as this constant source of chaos and stress for her brother, who she loves but also has so many emotional issues with, and you want her to leave whatever her life is to come help? Carmy is an adult and can make his own decisions (nobody is asking him to save this place), and those decisions are gonna leave him in a bad place with others, and these people can try and help but you can't help someone who isn't committed to getting help. So yeah, I think Sugar is very much in the right. Doesn't mean that Carmy doesn't have it hard and obviously he needs help in more ways than one, but people like Carmy can very quickly become emotional black holes, pulling everyones mental health along with them. She's just asking him to be a bit more considerate and also ask her, from time to time, how SHE is doing.
When I first watched the scene where the cops come, I never thought about how-assuming Richie called the cops-it could have been him being petty, I originally saw it as growth, but y'all make a good point. From the petty side, like y'all said, it could have been that it wasn't handled how he wanted it to, he wasn't in control of the situation, so he's shutting the entire thing down. From the growth side, maybe Richie realized it didn't have to be a "delicate ecosystem" and that the old ways were not always super healthy
Sorry but brother/sister that you grew up with and shared so many memories and struggles over husband/wife. If one has to live, I'll pick my family. Also, she asks how he is all the time and tries to help him. I don't think is that selfish to want to feel loved and appreciated by your brother.

I feel like a lot of people misinterpret the last scene with Richie. It's clear that he isn't gleeful or spiteful in calling the cops, he is resigned and sad. Imo he realizes his way wasn't working and he needed to make a change and do what he should have done long ago, and that choice was to me the start of his redemption arc throughout the series.

Fun little tidbit/possible continuity error. You can pause and see Michael was born in 1979 in the pilot. Also in the pilot, Ritchie mentions offhand Carmy wasn’t even conceived yet as of 1987. So for the math to work out, the story of Mikey’s 15th birthday and Carmy stopping that fight and falling into the bbq pit must’ve happened when Carmy was at most 6 or younger.
