Caucasian Sketches Suite No. 1, Op. 10 (1894)
Dedicated to I. Pitoéff.
I. In a Mountain Pass (В ущелье) Allegro moderato - Moderato assai - Tempo I (0:00)
II. In a Village (В ауле) Larghetto - Allegretto grazioso - Tempo I (10:00)
III. In a Mosque (В мечети) (15:45)
IV. Procession of the Sardar (Шествие Сардаря) Allegro moderato. Tempo marziale (20:01)
National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine conducted by Arthur Fagen
Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov, student of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, graduated from the St. Petersburg conservatory in 1885. He secured for himself the directorship of the orchestra of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and spent up to seven years learning about Georgian folk music. Some of the style and melodies of that region are included in his Caucasian Sketches. It is dedicated to I. Pitoéff, at that time President of the Russian Musical Society on Tiflis.
The suite begins with a vibrant piece, In a Mountain Pass, which is characterized by a steady ambitious beat suggesting the steep Caucasus Mountains. The second movement, In a Village, begins with a slow tempo and, after a cadenza, gains a steady beat and becomes more vibrant near the end, when after a second cadenza, slows its tempo down again. The title of a third, In a Mosque, reflects the abundance of mosques in the once Turkish Caucasus and Circassia, and the listener can hear the Muezzin's call to prayer in the music. The most famous and admired portion is the final piece, Procession of the Sardar, a Persian title for a military commander, leader or dignitary.

15 years ago in Youth Orchestra, I was sick for the sightreading day of this piece and walked in the next week completely unaware that the beginning of IV was just me and the bassoon transparent as all hell. Top 3 most holy sh!t moments of my band/orchestra career....

Take heart. Same story for me except it was 40 years ago and on bassoon. Terrifying, dangling in the wind like that. But we lived, yes? Lol.

Good stuff. In Malaysia, they once unironically used "Procession of the Sardar" for the soundtrack of an Islamic programme on TV. Lol

The "In the Village" movement was also used at the end of one of Akira Kurosawa's last films, called "Dreams". It was the first time I'd heard any of Ippolitov-Ivanov's works, and I've enjoyed his music ever since.

Erstklassig!

Was soll denn das? Selten so peinliche unpassende hohle Phrasen hier gelesen. Bekommt man das auf wikipedia? Letztklassig!

Love the piece, but found the performance a bit lugubrious. I have the Abravanel recording and prefer it, since this is an exciting showpiece for the orchestra, but that's just my preference. It zips by in 21:47.

Always interesting, sure, but just very simple music of an untalented freshmen. Not even inspired by the caucasian soul, just an artificial show piece

As Mr. Ippolitov-Ivanov can't react, I will do it on his behalf. See my uploads of his works. That should suffice to you what I think of his music. Not to mention the enormous effect he had on his students and the Russian music scene. That his take on the Caucasus and it's people is done through Western Russian eyes is typical for that time period. Look at all those American composers using Native American melodies, Busoni included, in a completely unauthentic way, not even adhering to the scope and style of the melodies, chanting and performing. But then again it is taken in by the composers, worked with et voila a different story is being told. Exactly that what art is! The Janisary military bands with its Turkish influences is another great example, widely to be found in the works of Haydn, Mozart and countless others. Hope my comment finds you happy and well. Happy New Year to you!

How can it be interesting if simple and the product of an untalented mind? Simple and the product of an untalented mind is not interesting, is it? So, if the overall evaluation is "always interesting," then the rest of the comment doesn't make sense, does it?
