Mikhail Pletnev playing Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 16, live in 1999. This is a low bitrate recording. The occasionally hard piano tone doesn't adequately capture Pletnev's sound, which is probably the most sophisticated on the planet. Nonetheless I've decided to share it for its significance.

I remember this Concerto distinctly at the Royal festival hall in 2002 - I think October or November? with the Philharmonia and Ashkenazy conducting. Pletnev executed one of his fanciful moments of voicing ( 12:18) right at the end of the cadenza , just before the reprise. Even though Ashkenazy had his back to where I was sitting in the stalls- the half turn and facial expression spoke volumes- as if to say ' that's not how I would have done it!' Who knows...

At 12.18 slowing down just to be synchrone with the orchestra ; it is a difficult transition !

With Rotterdam PSO conducted by Hans Vonk , March 1999 ? The middle part more flowing than usually. The end very exciting.( and at 4.55 beautiful horn solo )
