This is a major safety issue in baseball. It's to the batter's advantage to creep back, and it's in the catcher's advantage to creep forward. Getting hit with a backswing like that can be a very serious head injury. Neither the catcher nor the batter technically did anything illegal, yet the backswing hit him very squarely in the head. MLB and fans are only going to start taking it seriously when somebody "important" gets a career ending or fatal injury from this
@adamleblanc5294
@adamleblanc5294 9 месяцев назад
This is why I'm 100% on the pitchers side here. He should have been ejected, that's fair, but intentional or not, catchers have been getting hit way more than usual this year, and it's always the same guys with big followthroughs doing it. The message needs to be sent that "hey, you need to control your bat". It's not like the pitcher threw it in a dangerous spot, it was middle of the body to send a message and I'm fine with that. This sort of thing wasn't a big problem in years past, but a lot of guys have adopted this big follow through and it seems like catchers are getting nailed every other game now. Something needs to be done about it, and if the league can't figure something out, I'm fine with a few bruised hips to send the message.
@KenshinPlayz57
@KenshinPlayz57 9 месяцев назад
Great point, I think a great solution to 2 problems I think would be move the catchers box back since moving the mound wouldn’t do anything, this would make more action and make the game safer for catchers
@Yinlock470
@Yinlock470 9 месяцев назад
@@adamleblanc5294 the first pitch wasn't going for the hip, also this doesn't really send a message to anyone. if catchers are consistently getting injured like this then that's something that requires some rule adjustments, dinging a batter for an accident isn't going to do anything besides make you look like a jerk
@_Jake.From.Statefarm_
@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ 9 месяцев назад
@@adamleblanc5294 He's well within his right to have a big swing, and as long as he is in the box then the hitter gets more of an advantage than the catcher does. He can move back and should. He isn't bound by any restrictions besides trying to get the upper hand on balls in the dirt and framing pitches.. Considering the avg mlb pitcher now throws 95+ mph and the avg hitter hits around .250, he's going to use the back of the box. That's why it's there. There is no reason to be hit by a backswing unless you're too close.. There is a reason you have catchers interference on backswings.. Period. You want to change it make a catchers box..

People saying Mikolas was following some unwritten rule...no. It is not common, or a tradition, or some unwritten rule, to automatically plunk a batter after his backswing hits your catcher.
