I had been contemplating upgrarding to a 10 gigabit network for a couple of years now. I finally did it. However, do you actually need a 10 gigabit network? This video talks about my experience throughout the upgrade process as well as my experience of using it.

Samir... I found your video very interesting mainly because I too am considering upgrading my current network. I have a Synology DS1819+ NAS that I use for home backups of all the PC's (6+) in my house. One of the PC's is my primary Plex Server, I'm also running a secondary Plex Server on the DS1819+ mainly just so I have a running back up to the primary Plex Server. I usually rip my media to the PC first and then just copy the individual media files up to the NAS. Sometimes if I'm coping a handful of Blu-Ray media files (15 - 50GB each) it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. That is when I go get a cup of coffee and something to eat and then come back. I couldn't quite make out which model of Synology NAS you have but I'm sure it has the PCIe slot on the back in addition to the standard RJ-45 ports. Which NIC did you choose for the NAS to add 10GBe? I am thinking about getting the Synology 10Gb Ethernet and M.2 Adapter Card E10M20-T1, RJ-45; 1 Port combo card they just released. Right now my only network connection is the 4 x 1GB RJ-45 ports bonded together. Keep up the great videos.

Thanks for checking out the video. The synology I have is the 1618+. You’re right. It has a PCI-E slot that i used. I used the mellanox connect x3 card. The same one I used on my workstations. I was skeptical at first since it’s not exactly listed in synology’s compatibility list but it worked great. You can definitely get the combo card with the SSD cache but you have to evaluate whether it’s worth the money. SSD cache will only improve performance in specific situations. The connectx 3 cards are super cheap on eBay.

Great video Samir, thanks so much for putting this together. Any special considerations for wall plugs ( not sure what they are called ) I want 10gb network and then use a thunderbolt to 10gb adapter for connecting to my devices. cheers

I think you’re referring to keystone wall jacks. I personally used a CAT6 rated keystone jack but depending on the type of cable you’re running and the length of your cable youll probably want a CAT6A jack.

@@TechTalkwithSamir Thanks so much for the tip , it seemed like this is the cable here Jeirdus 30Meters LC to SC Duplex 50/125 10G OM3 Multi-Mode Fiber Optic Cable Jumper Optical Patch Cord LC-SC Thanks again Samir

Since you ran your own cable, why not use a fiiber optic one? SFP+ transceivers for it use less power (so run cooler) and are cheaper than RJ45 copper ones and cables are actually cheap as well. It's a bit more complex to figure out (with so many options for it), but doable with some research. Bi-directional fiber optic transceiver for a simplex cable can use around 1 W (compared to 2.5 W for a copper RJ 45 one) and one directional one for a duplex cable would use even less.

Yup. I’ve gone through a series of changes after this video was made. And one of the changes was to run a fiber cable. Check out some of my recent videos to see the updates.

Cool video! Does the switch receive your internet connection somehow? Or do you have that still running separately to your workstation through your old existing 1gbe port? Thanks!

Great question. Yes I get my internet through the switch as well. So basically the switch connects to the rest of my network using the 1gbps rj45 port. so anything connected to the switch can also communicate with the rest of the network. Including getting internet connection. So I only connect one cable to my workstation.

Watch out for heat - the CRS305 is recommended only 2x10base-T SFP+ modules - the other two should be fiber, otherwise your CRS305 will run too hot.
@TechTalkwithSamir

I can definitely see that happening. I only have one sfp+ to rj45 module and that thing gets crazy hot. The other 3 devices I have connected using DAC cables and they seem to run cool.

@@TechTalkwithSamir Ah ok cool - that makes sense. The DAC cables are short, and passive, therefore consume under 1 watt of power. But, a 10base-T SFP+ transceiver is active and can consume up to 5 watts of power at the 30 meter limit to maintain 10gig speed.

That would make sense! Thanks for checking out the video.

Cool video but my only suggestion is next time dont run a cable that just barely hits the mark run a little extra so you ran a cat 6 would be better to run cat 7 or 8 so in the future you dont have to keep re running cables every few years as things keeps moving forward... also next time skip the copper all together and go fiber that stuff is dirt cheap anymore and can handle wayyy more then copper ever will. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. This is a bit of a short term solution. I do plan on running fiber down the road ☺️
