Had my Mil-Tec for years and its never failed me. That is quite impressive for British weather. 😂😂

I have both the helikon and the miltec. They both work fine, but I noticed the coating on the inside of the miltec is thicker than the helikon. Also, the box stitching in the middle of the poncho is not taped on the helikon inside but is on the miltec. I dont know how thats gunna work.

This is really useful. Do you have any more experience now? I am currently struggling to decide between Helikon, Miltec and Brandit.

bought my miltec around 2016. after a few years the waterproof rubber coating wore off and started leaking, also through the seams(even though they are taped), especially around the hood. i still use it but mostly as a groundsheet. certainly not a durable product.( i am not too impressed with durability of miltec products in general) if you can, get a military surplus one.

@@charlesartificer2158 how is the size of helikon compared to mil-tec? is it smaller? my primary use is for shelter and mil-tec is barely enough
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Год назад
The Helikon Tex US model Dimensions: approx. 210 x 145 cm/ 83" x 57" in Miltec Dimensions: 83" × 59" in I own both and they look the same size to me. The same size as a real US GI Issue one. And to a full grown man they are barely enough. Thats why they are considered an emergency use as a shelter or for the ultra light option. Consider a 10 x 10 foot tarp. doesn't weight much, has plenty of room and after learning different set ups can be very versatile. there are alot of options out there that don't weight much at all, look on amazon. I have one I got on there I should do a review on it.

@@charlesartificer2158 mil tec here costs 25euros(available locally), helikon 46 euros with shipping(not available locally). i used miltec for some years as a shelter (even for 6-7 day trips with lots of rain), then 8 or so years ago switched to using 10x10 tarp(ideal for hammock, too big otherwise esp. if want to be stealthy). now for non-hammock camping wanna go back to playing with poncho especially for drier seasons
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Год назад
Ok I got ya. If you were state side I would say look into a camo harbor freight tarp. they make one that is 5'6" x 7' 6" that translates into 167.6 x 228.6 cm. Its big without being huge and its cheap. Under 10 bucks. Here is a link to what I am talking about. They are not high quality but will keep the rain off. www.harborfreight.com/7-ft-11-inch-x-5-ft-6-inch-camouflage-tarp-46410.html

@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 3 года назад
@404 The united states army issue poncho is still the best one made in my opinion. But the Helikon Tex is a close runner up. Unfortunately you cant buy a real USGI poncho easily anymore. So out of what you can buy my favorite is the Helikon tex poncho. I did a review on it.
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Год назад
@@punksnotdead7490 unfortunately I do not know where you can get a genuine u.s. issue Pancho or poncho liner anymore. That's kind of why I did these videos as I was comparing them to my old original one trying to find something equivalent. Best advice I have is to just look at the videos and try to make the best informed decision for yourself. The helikon-tex one is very good out of all the commercial ones I looked at. Second to that is the milltek is very very good. But weighs a little bit more if memory serves me right. As for Poncho liners that's kind of a shot in the dark I've reviewed a couple on here they're not bad they are very warm I don't know how to compare them to an original GI one though as I don't have an original GI one. I just have my memory to go at with that. I had one a long time ago but it fell apart after many years of use.

bonjour a tous , quel poids peut supporter le vrai poncho miltec quand on s'en sert de hamac ?
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 3 года назад

Did you go across the brushes in the usgi poncho?
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 Год назад
I think I understand your question, so I'm going to try to answer what I think you're asking. I think you're asking if I wore my USGA Poncho and went through brush? And if that is your question the answer is yes many times it holds up very well. However anything with thorns like a wild rose bushes crabapplethorn trees stuff like that or small Honey Locust trees that have those really long thorns on it. Anything like that it's going to put a hole in a poncho your clothes anything short of body armor. I hope this answers your question and have a great Thanksgiving.

Is there supposed to be a coating on the inside of the usgi poncho? I recently bought one at a price I couldn’t refuse but I noticed that on the inside it feels like there is no coating just the bare nylon fabric. And on the seams around and on the hood there is this yellow waxy substance that almost looks like old hot glue.
@charlesartificer2158
@charlesartificer2158 2 года назад
Coating on the outside, sounds like the old hot glue stuff you are seeing might be what's left of some coating. I know uv rays and time will tend to do that. Hope you didn't spend to much on it.

@@charlesartificer2158 yea thats what I was thinking it was, I’m thinking the guy I bought it from might have washed it as it appeared unused besides the oddities I saw, only payed 15$ for it so not much of a loss.

@@charlesartificer2158 yea its hard to find a good durable poncho that isn’t paper thin. I recently bought a U.S made airforce camo poncho from a surplus store for 25$. It appears to be made out of the same nylon material they coat military gortex jackets in so it appears to be pretty durable. The one downside besides the camo color is that the snaps are plastic which is a little disappointing. But If the woodland one doesn’t workout at least I have a decent backup

@@offtemp5733 true. So far the Helikon tex has been ok for me. But it feels a bit thin so I know what your talking about. Plastic snaps..... sheesh talk about stupid. But then again seems like everything is getting cheaper these days but my bills.
