My whole city is mildly interesting. It’s quite pretty except the outer suburbs and tourists often ask me “is there anything to do here”? Yes, go to the Gold or Sunny Coast. ❤️ from Brissy.

i had to use a payphone after totalling my car in the middle of the bush - managed to limp it to the nearest town, then had to use the free payphone to call a taxi to get me to the airport to get a hirecar so i could get the rest of the way home. Definitely an important service, if not technically a lifesaver. They also provide free WiFi, but I think you might have to be a Telstra customer to access it.

Last time I was up at a place called Aberfeldy in the high country of Victoria there was a pay phone there. Just did a quick Google search and it's still there. It's freaking amazing as there's not really anyone out there, and it's not easy to get to. I'm not even sure you can get there without a 4x4. It's really weird. The only thing I can think of is there may not be any mobile coverage up there and they need it for emergencies.

Ian, you keep saying it’s very hot here, but the heat is mainly in the red centre and the further north you go, the higher the temperatures, but generally, Australia has a similar temperature range to the US, because we cover a very similar latitude and longitude, it’s just that we’re south of the Equator while you’re north of it.

8:00 Fun fact. When I lived in Far North Queensland ten years ago, there was a public phone in the village near where I lived, and one in the community further down the road. You couldn't use coins in the phone. You had to buy a phone card from the local store if you wanted to make a call. Why? Because in remote areas where there isn't surveillance or lots of witnesses, phone booths that took cash were a gold mine for travelers or locals short on cash. Making them free was a wise economical decision with respect to maintenance and repair by Telstra.

I know the chances of this comment being seen are slim, but 8:28 I don't see this mentioned often re: payphones, so maybe it's not hugely common knowledge, but the payphones (with the Wi-Fi symbol on top anyway) are dual purpose in that they also provide "free" Wi-Fi "hubs" to anyone with a Telstra account number. I haven't been with Telstra in years, and stopped working for them even longer ago, so there may be other options regarding the Wi-Fi that I'm currently unaware of, but this is how they (Telstra) initially repurposed them.

4:00 interesting point about the 'Australia' shape - this is what most people will draw when asked to draw Australia, as people will generally leave out Arnhem land at the top! (I found this out at university when we were given an activity to do, and as a teacher I've tested it on students and other teachers many times). For some reason even Aussies will do the Kimberlies and Cape York in the north, but mangle the NT in between.

1:50 I'm relatively old when it comes to Freddo Frogs. I still remember the original chocolate Freddos that looked like the Australian Rocket Frog, and you could eat the back legs first, and then the front legs, and then work your way up the body from either end. No fillings. Just chocolatey frog goodness. Then they changed the frog! They turned it into some bizarre cartoon character that was looking at you as you ate it! And then they gave it INTESTINES! In the form of caramel or raspberry or some other sick, intestine-looking colour. My chocolate frog became a gut-ooze-filled monstrosity that nightmares were borne from.

I’ve been bitten three times on the same foot by a white tail & it’s not fun 😅 Twice on the same day while attending an outdoor event a few years ago. I had deep small ulcer-like sores that took months to heal & itched like hell for a long time. I still have bruise-like discolourations/scarring. The third time was a few weeks ago. Healed a lot quicker but still left a “bruise”. I think the severity of your reaction depends on whether you’re allergic? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Anyway, I know I’m lucky & I wish they’d leave me alone, I’ve had my turn…3 times 🤬😂

My man. A fellow named Mc Robertson ran a chocolate business. He had an 18-year-old kid who was his mould maker. He asked the boy to make a chocolate mouse. The boy told him that women and children might be afraid of mice, so he suggested to his boss, maybe we should make a frog. That was the birth of Freddo frog, 93 years ago. The company is now owned by Cadbury. Amazing story. Tasmania is not there because we call the place, “Melbourne’s apple storage.” (They’re big on apples but you can’t buy a decent apple on the island, coz they export all the good ones.) Must do a trip to Australia number two. 😹

Tasmania governed Melbourne before 1850! My family grew apples in the Huon Valley and exported them to Europe, unfortunately the market ended and closed in 1971, most of the apple orchards were flattened for other farming! The Apple Isle apple market is a pale imitation of pre 1970s, flowers are the biggest export now! Bilpin & Orange in NSW still grow a lot of great apples!

Standard national calls and SMS from Telstra’s network of more than 15,000 pay phones will be made free from Tuesday, while pay phones will become completely coinless from 1 October. How big was the fatberg in London? In September 2017, Thames Water made a horrifying discovery in a sewer below Whitechapel: the fatberg, a 250 metre long, 130 tonne mass of oil and grease congealed with wet wipes and other sanitary products . It's the largest ever discovered, and the Museum of London wants to put it on display. When was the first fatberg discovered? The word “fatberg” was coined in 2008, but only rose to prominence in 2013 when utility firm Thames Water discovered a 15-tonne blockage in London's sewers. By 2017, the portmanteau had been added to the Oxford English Dictionary, so clearly it has caught people's imaginations.

There’s no room for celebrating any distortions. It’s also not a thing to go door to door. The first year we moved here, back in 1981, we had a couple of kids come to our door for candy, but we told them we don’t do halloween. No one has come since then. It’s also not a safe practice for children in today’s society.
