I had this song on both sides of a 45rpm when I was a kid, and it shaped my perception of how jazz should sound. You had to turn it over just before Lucky's solo, and I played it until you couldn't see the groove on the record any more. This is a masterpiece, not a note too many, with perfect equilibrium between all players. And this is what I shaped my own sound upon. Sometimes when people hear me play, they say "Don't try to sound so American. You're European!" To which I always reply "When I started out, I listened to Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Horace Silver and all of them because they had a reputation of being great jazz pianists. So I assumed their musical advice was correct, and I ended up sounding like them. And you're trying to tell me there's something wrong with that? Get your eardrums checked!"

@amyprotscherjazz

@@saintbees2088 Yep. The (quick) fade-out was on the turnaround after J.J. Johnson's solo, and the fade-in repeated those few bars before Lucky Thompson picked up.

I'm listening to this song again 100th time. Never get sick of it I wish it was in, popular, local and main stream today lol As in quotes if zappa is jazz isn't dead it smells funny lol I enjoy listening to horns of all types and jazz piano. I am 44 years old. I seen old movies and TV shows they had thus music in it...nice lol Partly listening too jazz is like very relaxing and what life was like in 1950s lol how life was more simple back then. Fusion rock jazz was invented because of 1960s Rock was taking over and they want to compete

That is a personal opinion, what is noise to you is music to some others.. There are lots of people who would agree ith you, I was told by many people before I even heard one recording by Miles, that all he makes is noise, and that my friend was in the mid 50's... I am so glad my parents taught me to investigate for myself, and not take others opinions to heart.. Ever stop to think that your negative opinion might keep someone from discovering music that they might love?

Cristino Bermudez Salcines Prince invited Miles to play with him and he accepted the invite during an after hours night club event. Plus he did like how he played dirty jazz funk with him. Prince is so misunderstood. He did how he wanted and a wide variety of music. Look at his playing style after 2001. He eas into a jazz mode with Marsio Parker.

+John Lindstrom oh man good to hear someone knows him. I'm a Highschool freshman who is currently studying jazz. My dad found out Lucky was in Seattle, where we live. So my dad got to know Lucky really well and they became good friends. Its really sad how he died. he was stuck in a "hospital" which was more like a mental asylum. He didn't deserve to be in there. He was surrounded by mentally challenged individuals and wasn't able to leave. When he tried to explain that he is one of the few individuals that lay down the tracks for Bebop, they would not listen. So my dad brought records and other famous jazz musicians (like Clark Terry, Branford Marsalis, etc) to meet him and try to cheer him up. When i was born, he was still alive and he held me in his lap. Soon after he passed away. Overall, sorry for the long comment. Glad to see someone loves Lucky as much as I do... RIP Luck

I got hooked on his tenor sax playing Thompson hearing some of his Paris recordings from the 1950s, and was frustrated that I couldn't find many more "recent" LPs. Then I read the sad news that he was living on the streets of Seattle and no longer playing. That's so great to hear how your dad befriended him at that difficult period. The other thing I've discovered thanks to RU-vid is what a phenomenal soprano sax player he was too!!

+Notes On Paper Like Jazz Metal is talent based,but yeah there are some subgenres of Metal that appeal to a younger audience like DeathCore,Screamo & MetalCore that mostly appeal to a younger audience plus those people in those bands are known for their appearances just like alot of pop stars are,but the other genres of Metal especially the classic stuff it attracts an audience young & old,but with pop it's pretty much prepackaged stuff none of those pop stars have ever written their own lyrics or even play an instrument as well as a Jazz or a Metal musician & Metal draws inspiration from Jazz & Blues which is definitely why I love Metal music.

It seems there's a lot of discussion about who wrote this tune; Davis in this occasion credited it to Richard Carpenter, but considering that Carpenter was a guy who didn't know how to read music and described as the biggest leech in jazz music, taking advantage of many jazz musicians (like Tadd Dameron) who had problems with drug addictions, giving them some money for the credits of their compositions I don't think it's true. For what I've found this blues was actually written by Jimmy Mundy and it was originally called Gravy or Gravey and recorded with that title by Gene Ammons.

I disagree: It's a trivial melody that is intrusive and is completely out of character with the rest of this performance. @inazuma9361
@inazuma9361 3 года назад
A player? Of an instrument you mean? Metal started in the 70s, which was also an amazing period for music, going back to just the 60s cuts out way to much. As well Craftwerk and Stockhausen are electronic music, and they're brilliant. Also bebop started in the 40s, so saying that you must go to the 60s is wrong on that level also. Further this tempo isn't fast, not slow either in saying that but it can get faster. I feel it should be noted that people who play metal music aren't magically not players anymore because they like and listen to metal.
