Astronomers have discovered Milky Way's 'Sleeping Giant' Black Hole to be shockingly close to Earth. This black hole weighs as much as 33 suns and is lurking only 2,000 light-years away from our solar system. was discovered with the European space telescope Gaia, which tracks the motion of billions of stars in our galaxy.
The recent discovery is significant, marking the first instance of a large black hole with this kind of origin being found near Earth.
The stellar-mass black hole, known as Gaia-BH3, is 33 times more massive than the sun. This discovery surpasses the previous most massive black hole of this class found in the Milky Way, which was estimated to be around 20 times the mass of the sun and located in an X-ray binary in the Cygnus constellation (Cyg X-1). On average, stellar-mass black holes in the Milky Way are about 10 times heavier than the sun.
