Picked up Millennia. Haven’t put it down since. Very happy to have been wrong about this one.

I agree. I was expecting a trashy civ ripoff and while there's obviously a lot of Civ influence in this it actually does a lot of its own things and I think does some things better than civ.

One tiny but extremely powerfull early game tip is building a harbor as soon as possible. I'm usually take the clay technology as right after scouting so I get 12 tile improvement points at turn 7 or 8. This spawns you a utility ship giving your town 5 free food.

I'm really enjoying this game but it throws so much at you so quickly, it is a challenge to absorb it all. I really hope they keep developing this as it has enormous potential even with its known shortcomings.

Re: Local Reforms - If you go Imperial Dynasty, it's even better as you develop the Palace region throughout the tree so the power of Local Reforms is even better in that early game.

Just finished a game of Millenia on a trancendance victory. Pretty good imo. The thing i found annoying is that some improvements can't be placed on hills, like houses or other production chain improvements. It gets hard to plan out cities when theres a lot of hills and no flat space. This game has a lot of potential imo.
@SteinerNein
@SteinerNein 2 месяца назад
Outpost the hills and use prospectors to turn the hills into iron or gold and then funnel resources into flat areas to then turn into ingots and save your pop count

I'm still learning the game. Got my "lost a game" achievement yesterday. Was doing ok but was starting to fall behind. Declared war on an AI who had a city right in between two of mine. Didn't realize he had an alliance with my strongest neighbour so now I had to fight him too and he quickly took one of my cities. But that wasn't the worst. The unhappiness from being at war with both of them quickly made my cities rebel and only 3-4 turns after I declared war, all my cities had rebelled and I didn't have any money to keep them, so game over.

1st tip: i would even go so far as to strongly advise to use the 1st, if not even the 2nd culture power of the game for local reforms insted of planting down the first town. until you have at least 4 population within a city and about 20ish upgrade points to spend. unless you have major drawbacks in your first 6 tiles around your capitol city, expanding via a town very early is next to useless. wait for the first expansion of the border and place it in the third ring so to speak. 2nd Tip: Totally agree. In my first two games i totally underestimated the value of having a leader. It is quite simple: A leader porvides Tactic depending on his experience and Age level. The Age level depends on what Age the unit was when he is created by warfare points. Those Tactic points are compared with the enemy Tactic points. the difference gives the winner of the comparison a 10% bonus per point in damage on atack and damage reduction on defense. For example we have a leader giving 7 Tactics vs their leader with 4 Tactics. we win by 3 points meaning all our units deal 30% more damage to them while receiving 30% less damage from their attacks! It hardcaps at 50%. Every army i field gets a leader asap. 3rd tip: its more likely that the AI draggs you down with them into a chaos age but yeah, if you mess up and are on the path of a chaos age, you can hope an AI Faction makes an alternate Age before you. But after having played all possible ages once, i would say the only one to avoid at all costs is the age of plague. She is not THAT bad, quite manageble if you know what you are doing. But it takes AGES to get out of it! (Pun intended) each age takes roughly 30 minutes to an hour. this one takes at least a full hour in the best conditions but most players will be stuck for two. 4th tip: yeah, another one i underapreciated in my first few games. but getting all 6 tiles straight up from the go with the "absorb outpost" power is awesome. if you can plan ahead, this expansion is 10 times more worth than placing a town. a town needs to grow its borders to become fully usable and you need to spend engeneering points to upgrade its level to specialize the town. A absorbed outpost turns into a level 2 Town so you can choose its specialization right from the start! And the outpost specialisations like castles... well thats something players should figure out on their own. Tip 5: you can also combat chaos by a culture power and gain innovation with another. Tip 6: yeah. producing goods and turning them into something else is the key to snowball fast. but always prefer long chains over small chains unless you have no other option. for example the wood of the forester is better turned into paper in a paper mill and than into books for knowledge than just making planks in the sawmill. for production buffing turning iron or copper into bars and the bars into tools is the way to go. way longer chain, but the outcome makes you produce extremely fast. Tip 7: yeah, leveling up towns is a multiplyer of the boni you already got from the town. a specialisation is always better than leaving the town on level 1. but like i mentioned above: careful planning where to build towns ahead of time is way more useful than just taking the best spot early.

Pro-tip: changing the specialisation of an outpost doesn't delete the improvements. So you can put resource nodes on the goods and then switch to a castle to fill out with Abbeys and other structures.

Local Reforms, if you use at the very beginning, takes your city from 2 science to 3. So over its use it will generate as much science as the Eureka but you also get more of everything, especially production and culture. If you don't need immediate science it is objectively better early on than the Eureka ability. Also the Innovation culture power has the potential to be amazing, like getting art xp from brick goods, or concrete factories generate 4 more production per good(which is a 2x increase but sadly may only be available in the age of departure.) Wild hunters is a good national spirit for improvment points and food without grasslands but if you get the innovation that gives +1 culture from meat goods you can easily start getting a culture boost every 3 turns. And another tip! If you take the International Finance national spirit in era 8 you can get a bonus that provides 1.5x wealth treaties. If you make two treaties with two different nations you make loads of money but if you then cancel one treaty and restart it you will make MORE money because it factors in the money you make through wealth treaties. I only discovered this at the end of the age of departure but after repeating it twice I was making 20,000 wealth from treaties with three nations.
@valorath6797

Jesus Christ what do you even do with that kind of money in this? Did you basically just rush tech, culture and buildings?
@TheTrueBagman

@@valorath6797 The Finance national spirit also gives you interest based on your total money, so instead of spending it I just accrued wealth for greeds' sake. I had 1.2 million and couldn't bring myself to spend it lol

@@valorath6797 Definitely, but I feel like if Millenia was more on the foundation of Age of Wonders 4 it could've been a noble contender but considering it was made with a different studio and plan in mind I'm interested to see what they have in store for it. Edit: Also I think Millenia might benefit from the battle system in Wonders when it comes to strategic placement, line formations, and military leaders.
