Hey ShreddedNerd I watched through your video, and i wanted to pause. Im really bothered that, no matter the side of the aisle im on, nobody seems to really understand what “Woke” means from this channel all the way to the former Illuminaughty channel, to OSP. “Woke” to me, in the modern sense, i feel refers not simply to progressive ideology. It refers to a practice in which a company, such a disney, gillette, or budlight, uses intersectional politics (race, gender, nationality, religion, etc) as a means to pander to particular markets of people, regardless whether the core principles of the message reflect the values of the entity conducting the pandering. Gillette putting out an ad, pandering to women by denouncing the men as promoting toxic masculinity? That’s woke. But not because it’s left wing. It’s because they are doing it for marketing purposes towards women. I do not believe it is sufficient to simplify wokeness to being anything Left Wing, or anything about African-Americans, or anything about lgbtqia+, etc. I use it to identify a very specific practice that is harmful to all parties involved. Used in this sense, the phrase “get woke, get broke” has more context.

Well most of those people lack awareness to understand their own cringe. They think they’re actually fighting back against “literal evil”, when it’s just the average Joe who finds their niche idea to be quite strange. Ideally the act of shaming people has its consequences, as we can see those consequences with who is dominating media and entertainment, but that doesn’t mean we don’t learn how to counter this dominating niche culture.
empathy doesn't mean "being a nice person", it means being able to see things from the perspective of others. Manipulators are usually very empathetic people since they understand what people want and how to abuse that desire.
I think what manipulators have is what HG. Tudor ( a self confessed narcissistic psychopath) calls "Cognitive Empathy". They only understand empathy intellectually.
starfield is literally "write what you know" instead of hiring a sci fi writer, the usual clown wrote the garbage story about the multiverse and all the interns made "babys first quest mod" most of which are either "go there and get/kill the thing" or return the ring of some ex boyfriend of some gay dude or match up a black dude with a irish woman. 100%. In college, all the film and animation kids knew everything, apparently, and wrote the shiddiest stories imaginable. When I was deployed to Afghanistan and came back, the contrast of storytelling sensibilities was stark. I weep for the mainstream stories to be told within the next 15 years because they're all going to suck harder and harder, while being bankrolled by rich merchants.
The problem with "write what you know" and this generation is that nobody has any real lived experience aside from watching a TV show or playing a video game. Hemingway experienced a civil war, Rimbaud was a gun runner, Melville was a sailor, Burroughs was a fugitive. These modern writers are nothing more than nepo babies who grew up in a sanitized echo chamber, whose biggest life struggle was that time they had to make eye contact with their DoorDash driver.
I'll further add to this with some of my experiences with writers: At least one has sworn off Joseph Campbell as an anti-semite for something he said that I am not going to bother looking up, and this apparently loops into the Hugo Awards as well so you know where this is going. Granted, you can call Joseph Campbell the granddaddy of all slop auteurs when he made the monomyth, but once you've read his writings and you've framed all the media you've watched under it, the boundaries of literacy fall and you can aptly sculpt these worlds for yourself. If modern day writers are choosing to ignore this because of a spate, it's a castle built on sand. For further proof see Dan Harmon's "story circle" which is a monomyth made for short form content. Tumblr falling caused so much of this. Because companies really thought that twitter "engagement" was 1:1 for sale projections. I really miss the old days. When people on the internet that didn't like a community or piece of media just left. I hate them as much as the ones from years past that wanted to censor or ban video games. Saying it should be done because games "caused violence."
Tumblr caused none of this. Power and influence come from on high. Tumblr types and other similar breeds are just the natural modern manifestations of Liberal ideology. That's why the people with actual power have been using their money and influence to give them these positions and incentivize companies to hire them against their will.
It's really not the MCU's fault, for one it didn't create a top down perverse incentive structure that subverted the will of the free market, and two the elements people were annoyed by in the MCU all started with Buffy which a lot of the people who perpetuate the style we all have grown to hate being people raised on Buffy. Buffy itself is fantastic but it's influence is incredibly toxic much like Shrek actually great works that everyone took the wrong lessons from.

Having "politics" in a story or game isn't the issue, the problem is when the medium is being obviously used as propaganda to push some divise issue. People can smell it instantly and the backlash is almost always justified.
exactly that’s why people took issue with the Boys season 4. I’m personally right wing and obviously I understood much of the political undertones of the show that were anti right wing and anti trump. Despite that I still liked the show due to the unique concept. But in season 4 it genuinely became so obvious I couldn’t really enjoy it anymore. Why would I give someone money who openly now states they hate me?
Yup, the moment I see diverse characters. I start making a check box list to see if it fits the usual left propaganda. White/Black male? Straight? Strong jaw chick with ugly side cut? It's easy nowadays to see if it is an legit game with a soul or just propaganda fest.
Media can have political messages and opinions. But it becomes a problem when that starts negatively impacting the overall movie. Captain America has a lot of political messaging in his movies. Nobody complained until the new Falcon and the Winter Soldier show came out. That movie shoved political rhetoric down my throat. It also doesn’t make sense. Falcon at the end gives a speech where his advice is to “do better”. And he also literally defends terrorists. I’m not sure but it felt it was supposed to be like how people were defending the BLM riots.

The Boys also took aim at corporate pandering to the left as well, making them look gullible and narcissistic (the exploitation of Mauve being bi). Today, it seems that game writing has become more about the writer's self-expression, often to the point of being overly personalized. When these game (or movies) face criticism, creators sometimes take it as a personal attack, responding with insults. This has led to strange obsessions with “modern” fans, where they insist on labeling characters as gay, trans, or on the spectrum, even when it's not relevant to the story. New writers and their fans often demand representation, to the point where it can detract from the story or even harm long-running franchises. It’s an unfortunate occurrence that’s now become the norm even when those projects end up failing.

I think the treatment of Stellar Blade vs. Baldur's Gate 3 is pretty spot on. I've noticed this with Hades 2 as another example, being heavily praised for all the 'sexy' characters. One can only look at the differences in design philosophy to gather why one is considered ok and the other is not. There also seems to be a strong bias against the common Asian designs, hence "anime girl" often being used as an insult.
Baldurs Gate 3 falls apart when it comes to the woke argument since people WANNA hate it but cant since its too good of an RPG/video game so people end up just grumbling over it. Its just that modern DnD is so popular with western females.

Everyone agrees the first act is awesome the second is ok and the last feels like it wasnt made by the same people, most of the woke stuff was at the later parts of the game and were added late in development. After that the devs absolutely had it with wizards of the coast and stopped working on the game.

AI enemy programming seems to be a complete dead art in this day and age. These stupid tr00ns still can't give enemies the most simple amount of depth that Halo CE on legendary had 20 years ago. "BUNGIE WAS ABLE TO MAKE THIS IN A CAVE, WITH A 6 MONTH DEADLINE". Same with level design, map layouts, Mission structure that isnt "Go to A point and B point 3 times in a row with nothing to do in between".
This is why I like mostly designers (millennial, GenZ, GenX whatever) from private companies making indie games, movies etc. even if they aren’t popular or mainstream there’s passion and soul in the art. Not saying mainstream has no quality content, but it’s rare.

The problem with "write what you know" is that it needs to be paired with "learn as you go". When I wrote my first book I had to study all sorts of things in order to make the book make sense. I read many genres of fiction in order to broaden the base of my inspiration. Today's writers are too incestuous with regard to their references which then makes everything generic and stale.
Yeah, "writing what you know" only guarantees the output is not gonna be as bad as if it would be if you dared write about shit you don't even know anything about. But it is still no fool proof way to know you are gonna write anything interesting. You gotta know stuff in the first place. Many "millenial writers" are desperate to "change teh world" yet they have so little life experience and literary repertoire they have absolutely nothing to say that isn't a tired cliche. There is no quick hack to circunvent being dumb.

Live television and shows are just too goddamn generic for me, and if the premise seems good to me, the dialogue and acting is so damn corny or badly done that nothing feels authentic.... All I can do is play old games from the early 2000's.
Yes, this. There's no excuse for not broadening your horizons, especially nowadays when it's so easy to hunt down exactly what you want to learn about instead of having to comb through heavy medical tomes in a library. You can look up precisely what you need to learn now, from when zippers were invented to bird migrations...so why have the last five books I read felt like copies of each other?

I will never get over that Anita Sarkeesian clip where she talks about Hitman. Not only are you actively punished for killing non-targets, but you also can't use their outfits so there's not much benefit to incapacitating them unless you need the area cleared of witnesses. And considering that every time you incapacitate someone you then have to hide them somewhere, I'm not going to waste precious locker space on women who weren't an obstacle to my objective.
They barely get into your way as it is. In fact they help you lure the target out into private so you can take him out. What angers me is people consider the things she said as somehow "good" when she clearly lied about games like this. This is what they base their entire ideology of changing gaming for. Lying about the past and pushing their slop instead.
She straight up just ignored literally everything Hitman tells you to do to make some half assed point about killing women in games. Generally the idea of Hitman is to only kill your target. The ironic thing is anyone who knows anything about Hitman will know SHE decided to kill those women, the game did not tell her to do that nor does it reward you for it. It's like that whole thing the media ran with for years about how GTA is a game about killing prostitutes for money. Yeah, you can do that but as someone who's played every GTA I don't remember a single mission that specifically asks you to do that.

When you showed Anita Sarkeesian, it made me realize how hypocritical she was. She played video games and she ignored the context of certain parts that weren't sexist.
That was was her goal. Her goal was to subvert the media and push her ideology. She didn't play the games, she took a glance, called it a sexist and moved onto going into game studios like rockstar and making changes. That was the goal of alot of the people critical of older games back in the 2010s. They just want to subvert the media for their own propaganda.

Thing that pisses me off is how natives were never trans. But around 2013 the government started pushing these articles about how "it turns out native Americans believed in the two spirits". Gamingcirclejerk are the biggest collection of losers in one place. A person I knew from there is a writer who was defending Ava from Borderlands because she's "just a kid". These are the people writing your games and TV shows.
They are the people who were complaing about gaming in the 2000s. The people crying about the piss filter or the "macho man" BS. They took a glance at gaming and called it problematic. The truth is, they never liked gaming, they only ever saw to subvert it for their own causes. Which is why they defend bad games even if they know they are bad. Despite claiming to be above the culture war, they very much are the culture war, they started it and see the franchises they take over as land like they are playing a game of risk.
That subreddit is just like ResetEra. A place where people who don’t play video games go in order to complain about video games they pretend to play. Example: ResetEra whining that the Resident Evil series doesn’t have enough female protagonists… You know, the series where you play Jill Valentine (in the very first game), Claire Redfield, Jill again in 3, Sheva Alomar and other women in 5, Ada Wong, Helena, and Sherry Birkin in 6, and Rebecca Chambers in 0. These people seem to just want to be angry at gamers for anything, rather than to solve issues. I once remember seeing a post on there saying the fans of the Stalker games are sexist, because there are no female characters in the game. Or another one that justified corporate censorship, with the removal of player emblems in shooters, because people used it for hate symbols, therefore it's okay to get rid of it.
This whole culture war thing in regards to video games is literally "you're not allowed to have fun with this thing because I don't like it" and I'm glad to see someone else finally point it out. It's just frustrating that corpos are blatantly more in favor of one side than the other.

YES. THE VITILIGO GAMES. It makes it really easy to differenciate "inclusive" vs "woke" devs. Basically if you can make a character with a lot of details, but can't make Griffith - it's woke. If it allows pretty faces, long hair, long lashes - inclusive. Most "body inclusive" wokeism tends to always go to the "anticonventional". Heavy weight - never thin. Bald hairstyle for women, never long. Only with boob sliders, if there are ones, they don't allow you to go flat. And nobody ever talks about how excluded flatchested women are from womanhood all together. Nobody mentions how it alienates you from the concept of motherhood, even adulthood. You forever feel like an in-between, stuck growing up but knowing the growth will never come. I don't think I've EVER was able to indulge in egoism in a game - the character either can't be flat-chested as a woman, small-statured, or have long hair. At least not without modding. I've always loved "hyperfeminine"(normal, really) women, both of the "sensual" and "cute" parts of the spectrum, and I've seen a lot of guys want to play female characters for the same reason as I do - it's nice to look at pretty things!!!
Woke means skin deep diversity, where you care more about "what" your characters are, rather than "who" they are, and using them to preach a clearly biased political stance, than actually telling an entertaining story, or in this case, designing a good game. So creating a character which looks like... well, greek god makes sense. In Gears of War almost every character is built like a fridge and design is inspired by those 80's-90's action movies with Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Meanwhile you have Abby in Last of Us 2 set in post-apocaliptic world, where people barely scraping by and she looks like a roided Mike Tyson in drag... Also, when it comes to good looking characters in video games (especially women): people nowadays appreciate them because when they see them they know that developers aren't scared to do what they want and deliver what players like. Those developers don't pretend that they are above everyone else.

If I may posit a theory: You remember, when Trump got in in 2016, there was a faction of cringy people unironically comparing themselves to "Dumbledore's Army"? I beleive that we are suffering under something I like to call 'leased mythology'. When you look at ancient civilizations like Greece, Rome, Mongola, Japan, you have a pelthora of origin stories about the people and society. You have archetypes and people who you look up to and (in a physical and mental sense), want to emulate, like Achilles, Romulus, etc. By participating in the respected institutions of said societies, you could, in some part, effectively 'live out' the life, and emulate those icons of ancient mythos. Since the end of WWII, I would say that we no longer have organic myths and fairy tales. All our 'larger than life' heroes have been commerialized, be it Link, Master Chief, whatever or whoever. Hell, even WWII itself has been utterly commercialized and mystified, becoming a saturday-morning caricature of what actually happened. I posit that because today's fictional protagonists partake in things that are so utterly fantastical, it destroys a person's sense of scale and how change is made. For one, your understanding of how world change is made is ballooned by having a culture of characters that "Literally do everything". From the New Vegas courier to Captain America, only half a dozen people matter, and the rest of the world just sits on pause and do literally nothing. Second, a person's sense of scale is destroyed, because these stories make things like wars finish in a matter of days, rather than years. Tying back to point one, the entire thing seems to be done by only a few dozen people, if even that many. This ultimately explains why people are so obsessed with ousting people at the top of proverbial "political food chain", because they think, as per their entertainment, that cutting the head off the snake is the only way to solve everything. Literally all our "mythology" does this, so why shouldn't we be able to? Ultimately, when the average person realized they cannot do this, they get depressed and grow psychotic. Further, they ignore that change starts small and begins at the local level. Sure, federal politics in the US affect me, but if I live in Kansas, I can only change the politics of Kansas, and should focus my efforts there. I cannot change the politics of Idaho or Vermont.

When you brought up good character design I immediately jumped to Team Forteess 2. All 9 classes have very simple designs that appeal to the eye, distinguish themself from one another, and have enough little details to make them look good from any angle and hold up well when you look at them up close. Theres not a billion moving parts and intersecting pieces, it all flows together and creates a very coherent look. This not only helps make the game look good, but improves gameplay as just a glance is all you need to identify what class you're looking at. Additionally, on the topic of character writing/humor, all 9 of the classes make jokes and are intended to be funny, but they do that in different ways. They aren't just slightly different shades of the same color of "wisecracking jackass with a heart of gold", they're varied. you have a deep south supergenius mechanic with a calm demeanor but some slight sadism under the surface, a suave french lady's man who looks down upon everyone else and will only accept perfection, a loud, brash, and overly confident streetsmart city-boy, a loud russian brute with a quiet, loving side he reserves for his family, a dumb, canonically lead-poisoned american patriot, a mute delusional pyromaniac, etcetera etcetera. If a game chose only one of these many different character archetypes and molded every single character after that single personality, then that game wouldn't be funny. But it's the way all of these very, VERY different characters bounce off one another with their humor is what makes Team Fortress 2 so timelessly funny.

baldurs gate 3 was made by many different people over the years. Everyone agrees the first act is awesome the second is ok and the last feels like it wasnt made by the same people, most of the woke stuff was at the later parts of the game and were added late in development. Here's the thing about the whole "diversity" stuff. Gaming was always a diverse medium. Even before the activists came. It had characters of all different walks of life. Nobody needed to self insert themselves into everything. But the activists who subverted gaming cannot see this. AAA titles suck because of invasive monetisation in an economic slope. Games used to come out off-the-shelf ready at $20-$40. Everything is laced in gambling psychology now to make the dopamine + serotonin go boom since engine tech advancements and game genres have plateau'd. Kids grow up playing Pokémon or watching anthropomorphized animals cartoons during childhood are more likely to become furries when they reach adulthood. The whole "this wouldn't pass today" comment with pictures of Avatar characters is such a gaslight-y comment. The same people that hate Abby from TLoU -love- adore Vi in Arcane. Sexual liberation becama a "cool-kids" topic, and all the half-wit academics were judging Romeo and Juliet through 1960's San Francisco gay discource lenses. The folk calling stuff "problematic" today are just repeating what self-important but uncreative professors have been doing for half a century already in the scholary niche.
