Baby boomers were set up well for life. Everything came together for them in their generation. Largely in part by the generation before who had been through the great depression and did not want the next generation to go through what they went through . They think somehow they are the only generation in history to realize that working hard would bring automatic success. If this is true,how come people in sweat shops are not business owners in Missouri? Fact is, the generation before provided shade, baby boomers took the shade of future generations and have such a big generation population to keep themselves in power. Woman once said that if millenials worked during the summers like she did they could pay for college themselves. Says it all for how out of touch baby boomers are.

my boyfriend went to college at UNO (university of new orleans) for a chemistry degree, took him 5 years due ti an elective. he got scholarships that paid for his entire education and has no student loan dept. he is 7 year younger then i am. he also didnt get a job in his field some 4 years later. he just got lucky. A lot of the problem is people thinking they NEED a college education because the parents expect them. most baby boomers didnt go to college. I was born right as the generation shifted and just fall into the bracket. most kids my generation were raised to be the first in the family to go to college. a lot of families worked a lot of trade jobs to support their families. sometimes working more then 1 job. a lot of the work was waiting tables, being bus boys, working in construction, etc. in the 80s the economy was booming so there were more higher paying jobs, affordable housing. once bush went into office our econ tanked, through mismanagement etc. in housing a lot of McMasions were built just for investment homes, that you would move into, live in and sell high rinse repeat. where back then you typically grew up in 1 home, which you later inherent. things we dont think about is the 90s did see a spike in teen pregnancy so much it was called an epidemic. so you had a generation of teen parents trying to raise kids.

I calculated that college student now have to work three times longer for basic college expenses than someone in 1980. That's not even factoring in rent, car, insurance, basic necessities, etc, because those have skyrocketed in price because of inflation. The federal minimum wage has stayed the same for over a decade now.

There's a difference between working hard and working long hours. Working hard means building towards a long term goal with some short term pain. If you're just working long shifts at McDonald's that's not called hard work, that's called being too lazy to learn skills that can improve your situation.
@wetlettuce4768

I'm 32 and I no longer work hard from my personal experience hard work is seldom rewarded, 5 years a go I even changed career from being a chef to driving a truck just because the job is less physically demanding with the added bonus that it pays more and I get weekends off. I used to work very hard but I'm just too old and tired for that nonsense these days, I'll do what I'm contractually obliged to do no more no less.

@@reesejames7240 I know this is a pretty old generation, but speaking of entitlement: the rise in depression has absolutely no way anything to do with social media, school or parents. Depression in the west is far higher than say depression in India, yet in India people have it far worse. All the things that we can complain about in our society today, we can only complain about because we don't have to worry about survival. Food and shelter is a guarantee for many. The rise in depression has a lot to do with the difference in how we raise our children. When young minds lack obstacles and a sense of competition they will re-direct that stress onto trivial things.

Jim Heath 86% of this country's population lives in and around urban areas. I don't think that you understand that the rent for a basic (non-luxury) studio apartment in a city neighborhood (that is NOT in NYC, L.A., Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco or D.C) that isn't completely crime ridden, doesn't have vacant/burned out houses, and doesn't have a roach or rat/mouse problem, and is near public transportation (because you can't afford a car, maintenance and insurance) will cost you at least $900/mo. And a basic one bedroom starts at $1200. Basic meaning: heat/ac (maybe), utilities not included, coin-op washers and dryers in the basement. No elevators, no in unit washer/dryer, no gym, no private parking. For the aforementioned large cities, double the cost of everything for the basic apartments and triple it for the luxury apartments. Cities, especially large cities are where the jobs are.

Jim Heath, god forbid you don't think we are making sacrifices. We are risking near god everything to live anywhere close to your generation. And a lot of us can't. I'm working at least 64+ hours every week. I don't socialize. I recently got a new used car. My car insurance ever year by myself costs $3500. That is the cheapest. The second cheapest option is car insurance for $5,000. And my car isn't even worth $5000. How much would it cost if I could go back under my mom's insurance plan? $1200 lol to register 2 cars. I could just pay that for her and it would be literally thousands cheaper. God damn sick joke. I could then pay for the cell phone bill, the electricity and whatever else for her if I didn't get the car. Except, I gave my previous car to my mom so she can get to places because she can't afford to buy a car. Not even a car that is over 20 years old. I told you, we will sacrifice near god damn everything. Selfish prick... Hell, I introduced her to netflix to cut her costs down. No more home telephone or cable. Just internet and netflix.

Millenials weren´t as politically active when they were our age, they are much more self focused, that the world is dying they just realised now that we told them, I always feel like they are much more sensitive and naiv in some ways and they seem much more concerned about there outward appearance than Gen Z considering how they try to present a perfect life on social media while Gen Z makes memes about depression. I don´t blame Millenials for any of those things though. There are good explanations for why they seem different to me in these ways. There is a reason why they are another generation than we are. Of course there is a difference when you grow up under different circumstances and have different parent generations.

I relate with the conversation at 10:30 so much! I happen to make decisions that allowed me to come out in a better situation than a lot of my generation however! As a group, from maybe middle school on, we were sold a narrative that we likely won’t obtain. I’m not placing blame because a person can only teach you things they know, but I hear people judge young people everyday for making hard decisions that simply did not commonly exist in past generations. Things have changed, which can be interpreted as both good and bad, but overall we get blamed for things that have been transforming since before half of us were born and the other half were only kids. We’re simply making the most of what we have.

John Taylor the point is that many millennials are working from paycheck to paycheck, have thousands of student debt and are working multiple jobs. We just want what boomers had before, loyal companies, living wages, benefits. Boomers could pay for college with a summer job. @John Taylor A single income household could afford a house, car and bills. College could be paid for with jobs boomers worked during the summer. You paid into social security and got it when you reached the age to qualify. A company hired you and gave you health insurance and you worked there for a majority of your life. None of those are possible today. The younger generation works more jobs and more hours in a week to not be able to put a downpayment on a simple house, not be able to afford insurance (of course no benefits from their multiple jobs), and will not see social security. Also the majority are in debt because the generation before them told them they HAD to go to college to get jobs. Your bachelors doesn't get you an entry level position. You masters MAY get you that position. May.

My big complaint with this assortment of people is that all of the millennials are comparatively high ranking and rich, or relatively carefree and doing what they love regardless. An entrepreneur with a successful business, a communications specialist (which I assume is in marketing and thus high paying. Even though her friends are on contract work, she isn't), and a guy in the arts who's doing what he loves and not caring so much about making money. Where are the millennials that work two-three jobs and still barely survive? Where are the millennials working unpaid overtime with no benefits? Where are the millennials who haven't been allowed to work full time because no jobs hire them for it? Where are the millennials with >$50,000 in student debt their parents forced them into? Where are the millennials who have been applying for jobs at every local business for the past year and gotten nothing? Virtually every American millennial I know fits into one of those categories, if not multiples of them, and the only working one that doesn't is a government-paid emergency dispatcher. The only people that don't "work hard" that I know are ones that are dealing with severe, untreated mental or physical barriers. Bipolar disorder, panic attacks, autism, gender dysphoria, sciatica, etc. Compared to how much my parents worked, their parents worked, and most baby boomers I've seen worked, millennials work way harder for much less and end up far more burned out as a result. My dad whines all the time about having to drive through traffic to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week at a job he's held for the past 30 years, and drinks himself into a stupor on Saturdays as a result. He gets full benefits. He makes $130,000 a year. His job is as secure as secure can be, and he works doing something he's liked enough to do for 30 years. Most baby boomers I know are either in the same state he is, are retired and happy, or got laid off at some point in the past decade and haven't held a job since because now they're dealing with the current working environment. The "millennials" were hardly a valid representation of what millennials across the United States have to deal with, just like I would have preferred they get at least one white, male, conservative baby boomer. Like my dad.

Maybe it's just that those with anxiety, depression, introversion-- not that they can't be social just to not be social all that much--, and socially inept people have a higher chance to not interact in the outside world as much making it seem that it's caused a dilemma when it's always been there. And now that there's a place they all hang out around makes the numbers seem bigger? Or is it both, that it's trapping people who do have anxiety and/or depression and keeping them at that state? Could there be any benefits they can get in social media to improve if they hang out with the right people on social media? There's a lot of things one could look into.

To be fair, the "people work for one company for 50 years" model was gone when this boomer was in the job market. I entered the job market in 1975. Retired in 2016.. People changed jobs often. So, that's not a situation specific to millennials. Bear in mind that until the mid-late 80s we didn't have to pay for tv...cable wasn't a big thing. Most just had NBC, CBS & ABC only ... maybe a pbs station. Families had one, maybe two cars (one for each parent), and we borrowed the car when we needed it. We had one phone - a land line, and we rented the phone - didn't buy it. In the mid-late 90s suddenly people began needing their own computers, cell phones (and cell phone plans) printers, and everyone of driving age in a middle class family had a car, so Mom & Dad had to pay for car (usually) and insurance. It was a very different world when we boomers were growing up just as it was when our parents were growing up. But geez Louise, it was nothing compared to the changes we've seen from the boomer to the millennial generation. So much more materialism than I recall experiencing growing up. We didn't have everything we wanted, but we had what we needed. Aside from the injustices present during that time - and there were injustices - I would love to be back there...much less complicated. But, I suspect most folks when they reach my age begin to long for simpler times.

I think the lazy part comes from a different version of hard work. Back then working two and three jobs to attain your goals was normal, schooling wasn’t pushed as much... hard work was, making money right out of high school was more important... so I think they refer to millennials as lazy because they tend to pro long the work part by going to school and then taking a sub par job and work only one job at that but then also complain about not having enough money. From one end it’s simple, work more hours, get a better job or get two jobs, while the millennial side tends to add that they are doing school and working or they are working a job not in their field so it doesn’t pay great, but also don’t acknowledge that all of it is personal choice... you chose to work multiple jobs or you chose to go to school and take on a simple job to wait for your dream job... that’s a really general way of explaining it... but I’m just pretty sure that’s why millennials are considered lazy.

I have to disagree with the woman in black on the first point. As a disabled woman, we don’t get “hand outs”. It takes so much time and energy and effect to fill out the reams of paperwork necessary to get disability. I was BORN disabled. You have no idea how much I would LOVE to even work at Disney Store in the mall. But when I applied, I was interviewed on the spot. My power wheelchair could not fit behind the counter. And they didn’t know what else to do with me since I cannot walk. Even if I had been hired, Disability/SSI takes $1 for every $2 you make. Whatever you make at work gets deducted from disability benefits. Any increase in income counts against you in subsidized housing. The system is built to keep disabled people poor. I’m currently in college taking classes online toward my Psychology degree. I have a 3.2 GPA and do freelance writing whenever possible. Because my disability is permanent, I will always qualify for benefits on the basis of my medical records. However, I’m working hard to make sure that’s not my only income for the rest of my life. My disabled dad worked from age 14 until he was told to stop by his doctors. He often worked either 40-50 hours in a factory or had a second job. Don’t imply disability equals laziness. We want to work but we can’t. And the system stacks as much against us as possible.
