Apples-to-Apples, we're talking about speed and velocity. I think we need to sidetable the plethora of amenities that come with the Enterprise, e.g. transporters, sick bay, dining areas, etc. That being said, the Enterprise would need to come with the staffing, inc. expertise necessary to operate it, vs. only needing a pilot and co-pilot to operate and maintain the Millennium Falcon. There comes my primary issue with the Enterprise, which, by far is the superior spaceship, especially based upon its reliability. *_But_* this reliability comes with massive overhead- both CapEx and OpEx. While you can operate the Falcon, which is essentially a "hot rod", fairly independently. It's a question as to what would be more fun for the user- A massively staffed and giant yacht or a speed boat you can operate, fuel, repair, etc. _solo_.

+Charley Deppner The Enterprise could be piloted by on person, if all systems are rerouted to the bridge. It also has shields, phasers that shoot in a 360 degree field, and it has greater warp capabilities. It's really more like comparing apples to oranges though. Or a paper airplane to an actual airplane. If you are talking about what would be more fun? Enterprise has the holodeck, which could make it seem like you are piloting any ship you feel like piloting.

+Timothy Vreeland I presume we are ignoring the "Encounter at Farpoint" episode of TNG. But I will concede that, that was "enterprise + visitor" not just the enterprise engines on its own, so the falcon's engines vs ONLY the enterprise's engines then yes, falcon is faster.
@dozyproductionss

Comparing the Enterprise to the Millenium Falcon would be like comparing a Navy Cruiser to a tugboat. That's pretty much what the Falcon is, a heavily modified civilian tugboat used primarily for getting goods from A to B. The Enterprise, any of them, was a multipurpose long-range ship. If you were an independent businessman or a family on the move the Falcon would suit you a lot better than the Enterprise, if you were a semi-military organization looking for exploration and defense, the Enterprise is the tool you need.

Bad comparison, in my opinion. Falcon is a small cargo ship, Enterprise is a huge exploratory/combat vessel. A better comparison would be Star destroyer/Clone wars Republic ship vs. Enterprise. Outside of Star Wars vs. Star Trek, Andromeda is a really good idea for comparison with any Star Trek or Star Wars ship. And it's also pretty "fake-real", as Neil said, maybe even more than Star Trek starships.
@kingnachome
@kingnachome 8 лет назад
Falcon all day, speed and the fact I don't need a crew of science officers to keep it going. As for the Enterprise being designed as an exploration ship, that is cool, but the Falcon doesn't need to explore, the galaxy is fairly well known, the need for exploration within the galaxy at that point wasn't needed.
@natelavoie8618
@natelavoie8618 8 лет назад
I don't even have to watch to know Neil would pick the Enterprise because in addition to staggeringly superior firepower, it is primarily a SCIENCE vessel. It was designed for the purpose of exploration. That's Neil's bag right there.
@rebeltuba9422
@rebeltuba9422 8 лет назад
I'll have to argue with Dr. T about one part of his commentary: ships designed for pure exploration were in written science fiction all throughout the '30's-'50's. Many, many science fiction stories are all about exploration and what happens on the next planet. In TV and movies, he's right. On the written page, he's not.

Although I will say that hyperdrive is a faster way to travel likely similar to borg transwarp conduits as the falcon could cross the galaxy in a matter of months if not weeks while it would’ve taken voyager 75 years at max warp

i think in combat, man the enterprise against star wars ships? jesus its a beast. they dont aim their phasers, they tell the ship where to fire and it does it for them. they set the yield on photon torpedoes and select a target and the computer plots the torpedo's course. they fly in and around stars like its no big deal and they have transporters and far more advanced shields and deflectors. Star Trek dominates star wars in space combat.

Just another thought when it comes to the Star Wars universe: Their ships and structures have many seemingly bottomless pits and a lot of platforms that for one reason or another lack railings. For an exploration ship, to go explore new frontiers, the Enterprise is where it's at. So long as you don't mind wearing a uniform and following orders. @junjiehao6109 8 лет назад
+Robin Ophalvens (FusionRobin) Ships can fly closer to gravitational masses, i.e. black holes and suns, if they are faster. You can think of Han's statement as saying that he can take a much shorter route because of how fast his ship is compared to all the others.
@tiercelnox7552
@tiercelnox7552 8 лет назад
+Robin Ophalvens (FusionRobin) It has been well established that the Kessel Run is a region of space full of black holes and other spacial anomalies. This means that, to get through it, pilots have to plot courses that are safe for their ships. Because of the unique modifications to the Millennium Falcon, Han was able to plot a course that only required a distance of 12.5 parsecs to traverse and that's just in the movie. George Lucas himself stated that what made the Falcon so amazing was not it's pure speed but it's heavily modified navigation computer. We can also tell that the ships in Star Wars are, by far, faster, especially when you consider the actual distances and times traveled. In Star Trek, The star ship Voyager, one of the most advanced Federation ships ever built, traveling on it's own power, at maximum warp the entire way, would take an estimated 75 years to travel 75,000 light years; the slowest ships in Star Wars can travel 120,000 light years in a few days.
@DocFuglyMark

It only does well in fights because of Han's modifications and skill as a pilot. A more fair comparison would be the Executor vs the Enterprise. And, frankly, I'd still have to go with the Enterprise. Even turbolaser energy output is a fraction of phaser output. It just doesn't compare.

Look even granting that its all fake lets go with this: The smallest guns on a star destroyer (smallest, not the big anti-ship guns on the topside but the lighter weight side trench mounted guns) are capable of completely vaporizing 50-75m wide asteroids in a single shot (Empire Strikes Back)...an ISD has 60 of those. Full phaser array output is lower than that and the Ent-D only had 2 of those (TNG:TM).
@HaNaBiUcHiHa92

I agree so much with this. One of the reasons why I've always loved star trek more than star wars is the fact that yes, it's fantasy/scifi, but it's "real" in a sense that the writers envisioned this bright, hopeful, peaceful future for humanity, in contrast with star wars which has no ties to our world. In star trek, humans have gotten past their prejudices, embrace difference instead of fighting it and work tirelessly to maintain the peaceful world they inhabit. This has little to do with spaceships, but neil's comment about "real fake" vs "fake fake" made me think of this. And, well, the enterprise is just waaaayyy more beautiful :D

@Krustenkaese92

I love this man to death, but here's the deal. The Millenium Falcon is fake 'realistic'. The Enterprise is a clean, almost sterile environment. The Millenium Falcon is small, dirty and would be falling apart without space-ducttape. It is a transportation vehicle similar to a big truck, translated into a sci fi setting, a universe in which crime is flourishing. When a truck driver is driving through potentially dangerous zones, he has a gun. The way The Millenium Falcon has weapons. You don't need to be a fucking engineer to fire those guns, because it's more of a smuggler boat, than it is an 'official' ship of the Empire with a staff (where you actually have engineers and specialists firing those guns). The Enterprise is this huge, larger-than-life beast in a world where no money exists (which in itself is wishful thinking and unrealistic). The Millenium Falcon is oily and dusty and basically ripe for the dumpster .. and that's what makes it fucking real! Besides, the comparison itself really doesn't work, because both the Falcon and the Enterprise have totally different purposes and are thus differently equipped. The Falcon is more like the Serenity from Firefly, than it's like the Enterprise.

+Ssgt Griggs Yeah why would you need money if you can replicate it? It serves no purpose. Also there are plenty of dirty ships that arent in the Federation.
@berthulf
@berthulf 8 лет назад
+Ssgt Griggs Falcon has more in common with DS9's Danube Class Runabouts. Similar functions with similar equipment. The biggest difference is that Star Trek focuses on the quasi-military Starfleet and their pristine and well maintained vessels with crews of officers trained to maintain them to an exacting standard, whereas Star Wars focuses on a rebellion and its frankly pitiful attempt to maintain anything. The Empire, and later and more specifically, the Mon Calamari vessels are much more akin to the vessels of Starfleet, but there are still major differences, primarily in computer systems. Starfleet rely heavily on computer automation with 'human' oversight. In Star Wars almost everything is directly controlled by 'humans' with minimal computer assistance. I'm ignoring droids, as both have these to one degree or another. Power generation systems, sub-light drives, weapons and defensive systems are all roughly on-par. Though Trek shows a greater degree of technical advancement in its gadgets and gizmos, this is mainly in streamlining, usability and miniaturization, but they do have some gadgets that alter the playing field, such as Transporters and the more important Inertial Dampeners which protect the crews from hard G; a device never referenced or depicted in Star Wars. This item alone makes the Star Trek vessels far more combat efficient as it allows them to accelerate and decelerate far more quickly and to pull much tighter, faster corners than Star Wars vessels could; effectively allowing the Trek vessels to run rings about a comparable Wars vessel. If Han had been in command of the Rio Grande instead of the Falcon, he would not have had to 'drift lazily to the left' and wouldn't have cared about problems with his hyper drive (or warp drive), he could have simply accelerated far harder than any Star Destroyer could ever manage without turning its entire crew to a sticky pulp. I will point out that Hyper Drive and Warp Drive work along similar lines and that they are both non-relativistic propulsion; meaning vessels don't need to worry about G forces when using them: the systems don't generate 'thrust' in that way. (Warp drive encapsulates a vessel in a subspace bubble that allows space to move around it. Hyper drive shifts a vessel into a separate dimension known as hyper-space; bypassing relativistic laws entirely) Yes; we're all geeks here.

@Sanguiluna
@Sanguiluna 8 лет назад
"[The Enterprise] is the first ever spaceship represented in storytelling that was not designed to go from one place to another; only designed to explore ... Every movie, evey show that preceded that, built it to go to a destination; they go there, they get out, they pitch tent, NOT completely living on the ship as an exploratory vehicle." The TARDIS predates the Enterprise by three years, and its main purpose was to explore both space and time, never to "find" a single place. And I'd argue that it goes even beyond what the Enterprise was, in that while the TARDIS was/is an exploratory vehicle like the Enterprise, it isn't not JUST an exploratory vehicle; it's also itself a character, a _companion_: the first, and only constant friend and companion the Doctor has had throughout his lives.
@loulybob
@loulybob 8 лет назад
+Sanguiluna I'd still argue that the entire point of the TARDIS back in 1963 was to specifically travel from point to point. The destinations were the only thing that really mattered. Star Trek has a ton of episodes that revolve around planets too yes, but there's also a load of episodes where they're entirely in space just travelling along. Also Doctor Who is not anywhere near hard sci-fi so it's kind of hard to compare the TARDIS which is so out there in its construction to something that actually tries to explain some of its details with physics. As a disclaimer I love both shows so don't think I don't like Doctor Who. I do - just thought I'd give an alternative opinion :)
@SurgStriker

they failed to mention which enterprise though. Starting with D, they had replicators that make it infinitely preferable (no need to stop to stock up on rations, and the ability to eat whatever you wanted. Plus it deconstructs waste matter so you don't have to dump waste like the imperial ships did that allowed the falcon to escape). Enterprise also has higher top speeds, which even when talking about light speed (or .5 past light speed), is still a very long time travelling from star to star. Enterprise also has more advanced sensor arrays, which helps to determine threats (like radiation levels, or magnetic fields from nearby celestial bodies that could damage a ship), and enhanced shielding. Millennium falcon's only benefit is maneuverability, but that is far more situational and for the vast majority of space pretty useless. But i'll let the star wars fanboys have their holo-chess against a wookie (which they better lose), while i enjoy a relaxing trip to the holodeck.

Halo ships are great, but they struggled against the covenant for a reason, no shields, lesser firepower and slower speeds, the infinity is a beast but it would only really hold up against the star destroyers and maybe the falcon if it can hit with the mac cannon or fighters, but a fully shielded federation starship would wreck that ship hard, superior speed, defenses, weapons and everything make for an interesting fight but a federation victory, unless it's the NX -01 in which case things are more even footing and the warp speed torpedo and phaser strikes would be their friend

It has nothing to do with the purpose of the vehicles, but the technology they come with. The only thing the Millenium Falcon has over the Enterprise is its speed; in Star Wars, you can cross the entire galaxy in no time at all. But the Enterprise (as others have mentioned), and Star Trek as a whole, has replicators, holodecks, teleporters, extremely advanced medicine, and other it-might-as-well-be-magic technology that's way beyond anything Star Trek has for the most part. Hell, keep both ships and just give me a replicator and holodeck and I'm set for life.

0:20 Does Neil deGrasse Tyson have scientists and engineers in his car when he drives to the store? Nope. In Star Wars, space ships have been around for so long, they are like cars of today. 1:33 No. The MF is an order of magnitude ahead of the Enterprise in terms of power. Star Destroyers can vaporise asteroids that are ~40 meters across. The MF was hit by one of those and the shields didn't go down. It pushed it around a lot, but the shields didn't go down.

Did Neil deGrasse Tyson get it wrong? I think he did for a multitude of reasons. For one thing he cannot think outside the box and I will prove it. Which is better the Millennium Falcon or the USS Enterprise is different than which would you choose personally. The Enterprise requires an entire crew to fly the Falcon as stated can be piloted by just one person. The Falcon has a small science lab but you (Neil deGrasse Tyson) could converter one of the cargo bays into an even bigger science lab. Han did not search the galaxy with the Millennium Falcon but Mr Tyson can. Han Solo stated he has been from one side of the galaxy to the other. Keep in mind it only took a couple of hours to go from Tatooine to Alderaan so it has to be fast. Lando modified the Millennium Falcon to have an escape ship so it could be modified to have photon torpedoes. Captain Kirk is awesome and the Enterprise is nice if Scotty is there to beam you up but if not you are out of luck Mr. Tyson. The Warp drive is cool and so are the photon torpedoes but you need help from Scotty and Sulu to make use of them. If it is just you Mr Tyson in the USS Enterprise you are a sitting duck. With a full crew the Enterprise is a force to be reckoned with but for my own personal Spaceship I will take the Millennium Falcon over the USS Enterprise all day every day.
